Early detection of microcomedones induced by cocoa butter using reflectance confocal microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Many ingredients used in cosmetics evoke a comedogenic response. The concept of ''acne cosmetica'' was developed to link the use of certain ingredients to comedone formation. Various clinical research methods have been suggested for the effective screening of an ingredient that can worsen acne or acneiform eruption and confirm its clinical relevance as to whether it is used as a non-comedogenic claim. Although comedogenicity assessment has not yet been established, attempts have been made to evaluate the comedogenicity of cosmetic ingredients and find the most appropriate method to

Natural occurrence of aflatoxins in peanuts and peanut butter from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi that may contaminate food and pose a health risk, especially in developing countries, where there is a lack of food security and quality is subsumed by food insufficiency. Aflatoxins are the most toxic known mycotoxins and are a significant risk factor for liver and kidney cancer, teratogenicity, undernutrition, and micronutrient malabsorption in both humans and animals. The main aim of the study was to determine the extent of fungal and aflatoxin contamination in peanuts and peanut butter being sold in both the formal an

Lipidomics and Flavouromics assessment of the effects of enzyme modification on butter composition.

Enzyme-modified butter (EMB) is well-known for its rich flavour, which is primarily defined by the process of enzymatic hydrolysis. This study employed lipidomics and flavouromics to assess the differences between EMBs and to uncover the intrinsic links between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and lipids. Approximately 273 lipids and 82 VOCs were identified in butter. Palatase 20,000 L and Lipase MHA 10SD had the strongest hydrolytic activities, enhancing flavours characterised by the highest content of acids, followed by lactones and ketones. Combined with the variable importance in projecti

[Management of carpal tunnel syndrome--"bread and butter" in the United States].

In the United States, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common diseases and is well recognized by the general population. The number and amount of workers' compensation claims in the U.S. are enormous and the news has been received high degree of attention. Similar to Japan, the initial treatment is non-surgical, but the failure to non-surgical treatment usually leads to surgical intervention without delay.

Exposure of Listeria monocytogenes within an epidemic caused by butter in Finland.

Data on the levels of bacteria and the amounts of food consumed in food-borne outbreaks provides an excellent opportunity to study the effects of exposure to Listeria monocytogenes. Between June 1998 and April 1999, an outbreak caused by L. monocytogenes serotype 3a in butter occurred in Finland. The majority of the cases were immunocompromised and hospitalized at the Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH), where 7-g butter packages produced by a dairy plant were used as the only butter brand. The butter had also been sold to 10 other central hospitals as well as to the retail market. Bas

SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF D-XYLOSE AND BUTTER-FAT ABSORPTION USING MICROMETHODS.

Most intestinal absorption tests require collections of stool or urine. Measuring the five-hour urinary excretion of D-xylose presents difficulties in very young subjects; catheterization may be required for accurate collections, and xylose excretion may depend on the volume of urine excreted during the test.In this study, D-xylose absorption was measured by the blood tolerance curve, and the determination of D-xylose concentration in whole blood was adapted to a microtechnique. Butter-fat absorption was determined by the timed change in serum turbidity after an oral dose of 0.5 g. butter-fat/

Quality properties of fermented butter using extract solution from Korean traditional fermented pastes.

This study evaluated the quality properties of fermented butter using 0.5% (v/v) extract solution from Korean traditional fermented soy pastes (KFSE; C: Cheonggukjang; D: Doenjang; and M: Meju). Samples were analyzed for pH, Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) color, viscosity, moisture and fat contents, total plate count, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count, electronic nose, electronic tongue, and sensory evaluation. The Con (fermented butter using commercial starter) showed a significantly lower pH than KFSE-treated samples (p < 0.05). The M exhibited significantly higher LAB counts

Tibetan Butter Tea Consumption and Cognitive Performance Among Tibetan Adolescents at High Altitude.

Background: Tibetan butter tea sits at a tension between the health concerns raised by its high salt and fat content and the potential cognitive benefits of its tea-derived constituents, yet whether this traditional beverage is associated with cognition in high-altitude Tibetan adolescents has not been directly examined. Methods: We conducted a school-based cross-sectional study of Tibetan students in grades 7-12 in Lhasa, Xizang, China, between June 2024 and June 2025. The analytic sample included 7967 students, with ages ranging from 10.18 to 24.82 years (mean ± SD: 16.06 ± 1.80). Butter tea

Application of cocoa butter for formulation of fast melt tablets containing memantine hydrochloride.

INTRODUCTION: Fast melt tablets (FMTs) provide a convenient dosage form that rapidly dissolves on the tongue without the need for water. Cocoa butter serves as a suitable matrix system for FMTs formulation, facilitating rapid disintegration at body temperature. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to formulate FMTs using cocoa butter as a base and investigate the effect of various disintegrants and superdisintegrants on their characteristics. METHODS: Cocoa butter-based FMTs were prepared via the fusion molding technique. Different disintegrants and superdisintegrants were added at varying concentra

Bronchiolitis obliterans and consumer exposure to butter-flavored microwave popcorn: a case series.

Respiratory exposure to diacetyl and diacetyl-containing flavorings used in butter-flavored microwave popcorn (BFMP) causes lung disease, including bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), in flavorings and popcorn manufacturing workers. However, there are no published reports of lung disease among BFMP consumers. We present a case series of three BFMP consumers with biopsy-confirmed BO. We review data relating to consumer exposures, estimate case exposures, and compare them to diacetyl-containing flavoring-exposed manufacturing workers with lung disease. These consumer cases' exposure levels are compar

Optimizing cream ripening conditions for high-fat butter with improved textural properties.

High-fat butter (up to ∼84% fat) is valued for its plasticity and handling performance during processing and utilization, which are strongly influenced by the fat crystal network and microstructure. This study aimed to optimize cream ripening conditions to enhance the techno-functional properties of butter. The effects of a 3-stage cold-warm-cold (CWC) cream ripening process, known as the Alnarp method, were investigated using various time-temperature regimens. Fatty acid (FA) composition was quantified by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Fat crystallization behavior, togeth

Production of zein-based electrospun nanofibers for preservation of Iranian traditional butter.

Microbial spoiling and oxidative rancidity pose serious problems for the shelf life of Iranian traditional butter. In order to preserve butter, this study created zein-based electrospun nanofibers (NFs) that contain thyme essential oil (TEO), grape leaf extract (GLE: 5-30 %), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). The ideal formulation (Zein/ZnONPs/GLE30 %/TEO) demonstrated good antibacterial activity (11 mm and 16 mm inhibition zones against S. aureus and E. coli), high hydrophobicity (137.5° contact angle), uniform morphology (638 ± 164.69 nm diameter), and antioxidant capacity (34 % DPPH sc

An outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes serotype 3a infections from butter in Finland.

In February 1999, an outbreak of listeriosis caused by Listeria monocytogenes serotype 3a occurred in Finland. All isolates were identical. The outbreak strain was first isolated in 1997 in dairy butter. This dairy began delivery to a tertiary care hospital (TCH) in June 1998. From June 1998 to April 1999, 25 case patients were identified (20 with sepsis, 4 with meningitis, and 1 with abscess; 6 patients died). Patients with the outbreak strain were more likely to have been admitted to the TCH than were patients with other strains of L. monocytogenes (60% vs. 8%; odds ratio, 17.3; 95% confiden

Deciphering the Microbiota and Volatile Profiles of Algerian Smen, a Traditional Fermented Butter.

In Algeria, Smen is a fermented butter produced in households using empirical methods. Smen fermentation is driven by autochthonous microorganisms; it improves butter shelf-life and yields highly fragrant products used as ingredients in traditional dishes as well as in traditional medicine. The present study is aimed at investigating microbial diversity and dynamics during Algerian Smen fermentation using both culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches, as well as by monitoring volatile organic compound production. To reach this goal, fifteen Smen samples (final products) produced in

A review of ethnomedicinal uses of shea butter for dermatoses in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Indigenous therapies, or traditional medicines (TMs), constitute a highly accessible and continuously growing health system in many parts of the world, including Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Shea butter, a fat produced from the kernels of the shea tree, has historically been used as an indigenous therapy for dermatologic ailments in SSA. Characterizing traditional therapeutic applications for shea butter is important to inform the continued development of TM in SSA. We conducted a literature review aimed at identifying all available publications on the use of shea butter to treat dermatoses withi
