Microclimate-based oviposition site selection in butterflies and moths.

The sites herbivorous insects select to deposit eggs determine to a variable degree the environment their larvae will experience during development. Therefore, oviposition site selection should be seen as a significant life-history trait affecting the survival of the offspring. While searching for suitable sites, egg-laying terrestrial insects are predicted to respond to environmental factors that function as indicators for larval development and survival. In herbivorous insects, such as butterflies and moths, microclimate may be of significance for the selection of a suitable host plant or sp

Species-specific spectral tuning of motion vision in butterflies.

Color provides an important visual dimension for object detection and classification. In most animals, color and motion vision are largely separated throughout early stages of visual processing. However, accumulating evidence indicates crosstalk between chromatic and achromatic pathways. Here, we investigate the spectral sensitivity of the motion-vision pathway at the level of pre-motor descending neurons (DNs) in two butterfly species with different retinal compositions and wing coloration. Butterflies engage in fast, agile flight within often colorful visual ecologies, which may heighten evo

Butterflies in the stomach: a critical analysis on human scoleciasis.

Butterflies and moths have been admired for their beauty since ancient times, but even these graceful insects can pose a danger to humans, albeit rarely, mainly because of the stinging toxic hairs on the larval stage of some species. In addition to this, since the 16th century, occasional findings of caterpillars still alive after being expelled by people through vomit or faeces led prominent scientists to consider the possibility that the larvae of some species of butterflies and moths, if accidentally ingested, could survive in the human gastrointestinal tract and cause a true infestation. Visual cue properties determine innate orientation strategy in Monarch butterflies.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has an impact on fetal adrenal gland size and volume, which are greater in the GDM population. This study used 2D and 3D ultrasound scanning to determine the correlation of fetal adrenal gland size and volume with fructosamine levels, HbA1c levels, estimated fetal weight (EFW), and neonatal birth weight in GDM patients. METHODS: This study included eighty singleton pregnant women diagnosed with GDM between 24-28 weeks of gestation. During weeks 32-34 of gestation, the length, width, and depth of the fetal zone and total adrenal gland were measure

Thermal effects on metabolic rate in diapausing Pieris rapae butterflies.

As ectotherms, many insects spend the winter months in a state of suspended animation (i.e., diapause), lowering their metabolic rates to subsist on a limited store of energy reserves. The ability to lower metabolic rate during diapause relies, in part, on cold winter temperatures to intrinsically lower metabolic rate. Winter warming associated with global climate change may pose a challenge to diapausing insects by intrinsically increasing metabolic rate, potentially leading to the exhaustion of energetic reserves. We used stop-flow respirometry to measure oxygen consumption in response to te

Climate predicts both visible and near-infrared reflectance in butterflies.

Climatic gradients frequently predict large-scale ecogeographical patterns in animal coloration, but the underlying causes are often difficult to disentangle. We examined ecogeographical patterns of reflectance among 343 European butterfly species and isolated the role of selection for thermal benefits by comparing animal-visible and near-infrared (NIR) wavebands. NIR light accounts for ~50% of solar energy but cannot be seen by animals so functions primarily in thermal control. We found that reflectance of both dorsal and ventral surfaces shows thermally adaptive correlations with climatic fa

Toxicity of Agrochemicals Among Larval Painted Lady Butterflies (Vanessa cardui).

In the Southern High Plains of the United States, beef cattle feed yards and row crop agriculture are predominant sources of agrochemical usage. Beef cattle feed yards use large quantities of veterinary pharmaceuticals to promote cattle growth and health, along with insecticides to control insect pests, whereas row crop-based agriculture relies on herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides to increase yields. Previous studies have documented the occurrence of agrochemicals beyond feed yard and row crop agriculture boundaries in uncultivated, marginal areas, raising concern that migratory pollina

INVESTIGATION OF ANESTHESIA TECHNIQUES IN PAPER KITE BUTTERFLIES (IDEA LEUCONOE).

Despite the frequency of invertebrates in research, zoological, and personal collections, sedation and anesthesia in these species remains poorly studied. This study assessed anesthetic techniques in paper kite butterflies (Idea leuconoe). Thirty-six recently emerged butterflies were individually placed in 1.9 L air-tight containers and randomly exposed to one of six treatments (n = 6/group): 5% isoflurane via vaporizer (2 L min-1, fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) 1.0); (V), 0.5 mL (CB0.5) or 3.0 mL (CB3) liquid isoflurane on a cotton ball (FiO2 0.21); 100% carbon dioxide via flowmeter (2 L

Updates in Butterfly Graft Technique.

Nasal obstruction is a significant challenge greatly affecting individual quality of life. It is one of the most common presentations in the otolaryngology clinic, often persisting despite medical and, at times, surgical intervention. The butterfly graft has proven to be a veritable option addressing nasal valve collapse. Herein, we describe our most recent operative technique, highlight its application in ethnic rhinoplasty and revision cases, and discuss incorporation of dorsal preservation techniques in functional rhinoplasty.

The pathology of butterfly densities in uraemia.

Seven cases are presented which are considered to throw some light on the pathology of butterfly densities and their pathogenesis. It is shown that reversible butterfly densities may represent pulmonary vascular congestion and readily reabsorbed oedema fluid resulting from fluid retention and increased blood volume (fluid lung). Terminal butterfly densities associated with hypertensive heart failure in uraemia represent variable haemorrhagic and fibrinous pulmonary oedema with secondary cellular changes and organization (uraemic pneumonia). By means of whole lung sections haemorrhagic forms of

Revisiting the flight dynamics of take-off of a butterfly: experiments and CFD simulations for a cabbage white butterfly.

We conducted measurements of the taking-off motion of a butterfly (Pieris rapae) and numerical simulations using a computational model reflecting its motion. The computational butterfly model is composed of a thorax, an abdomen, and four wings (left and right wings with fore and hind parts), i.e. a six-link, rigid-body system. The present model is more sophisticated than any models that have ever been constructed in existing studies. In the butterfly model, the body trajectory and thoracic pitching angle can be calculated from the equations of motion, whereas the abdominal angle and wings' joi

Patterns of host use by brood parasitic Maculinea butterflies across Europe.

The range of hosts exploited by a parasite is determined by several factors, including host availability, infectivity and exploitability. Each of these can be the target of natural selection on both host and parasite, which will determine the local outcome of interactions, and potentially lead to coevolution. However, geographical variation in host use and specificity has rarely been investigated. Maculinea (= Phengaris) butterflies are brood parasites of Myrmica ants that are patchily distributed across the Palæarctic and have been studied extensively in Europe. Here, we review the published
