A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was used to evaluate the effect of xylanase and sodium butyrate supplementation on performance, intestinal fermentation, histology, and morphometry in broiler chickens. A total of 384 Ross 308 broiler chicks (1-day-old) were allocated to 4 experimental treatments: CTR (control diet), XYL (CTR diet with 16,000 BXU/kg of xylanase), BUT (CTR diet with 1 kg/t sodium butyrate), and XYL+BUT (CTR diet plus xylanase and sodium butyrate). Each treatment had 8 replicates of 12 animals. Starter and grower diets, based on wheat and soybean meal, and water were available ad lib

BACKGROUND: Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) formed by the fermentation of complex carbohydrates by the bacteria in the colon, is the main source of nutrition for colonocytes. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of butyrate on the healing of colonic anastomosis in a rat model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were fed a fibre-free diet for 2 days. They then underwent laparotomy, transection, and anastomosis of both left and right colon, with a defunctioning caecostomy. The animals were then randomly assigned to receive butyrate or saline enemas from

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by degeneration of the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord, leading to muscular paralysis with muscular atrophy. No effective treatment of this disorder is presently available. Studies of the correlation between disease severity and the amount of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein have shown an inverse relationship. We report that sodium butyrate effectively increases the amount of exon 7-containing SMN protein in SMA lymphoid cell lines by changing the alternative splicing pattern of exon 7 in the SMN2 gene. In

PURPOSE: Intracolonic infusions of short chain fatty acids promote healing of colonic anastomoses. Because the intravenous route may have wider clinical application, we studied the effect of intravenous n-butyrate on the mechanical strength of colonic anastomoses in the rat.
METHODS: After placement of an indwelling intravenous catheter, the descending colon was transected and an anastomosis was performed. Rats were then randomized to receive total parenteral nutrition (TPN group; n = 15) or total parenteral nutrition plus 130 mM/l of n-butyrate (TPN+BUT group; n = 13). On the fifth postopera

1. Everted sacs of colonic mucosa from the wild rabbit did not transport acetate against a concentration gradient, but permeation down a concentration gradient did occur. 2. Butyrate was shown to permeate sheets of caecal mucosa with some conversion into ketone bodies during the passage. More ketone bodies were released from the serosal surface of the sheet than from the epithelial surface, regardless of the side to which the butyrate was added. 3. During absorption in vivo of [1-(14)C]butyrate from the caecum the ratio of [(14)C]butyrate to (14)C-labelled ketone bodies in the blood collected

While oral administration offers distinct advantages for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC), its efficacy is often limited by poor drug targeting and the disease's multifactorial pathology. Herein, we report an orally bioavailable nanotherapeutic system, CAB@Que, in which cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) functions not merely as a delivery vehicle for quercetin (Que) but as a colon-specific butyrate prodrug, enabling synergistic and targeted therapy of UC. The CAB nanocarrier itself exhibits intrinsic therapeutic activity: upon reaching the inflamed colon, its butyryl side chains undergo

Colorectal disturbances encompass a variety of disorders that impact the colon and rectum, such as colitis and colon cancer. Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, plays a pivotal role in supporting gut health by nourishing colonocytes, promoting barrier function, modulating inflammation, and fostering a balanced microbiome. Increasing colorectal butyrate concentration may serve as a critical strategy to improve colon function and reduce the risk of colorectal disturbances. Butyrylated high-amylose maize starch (HAMSB) is an edible ingredient that efficiently delivers butyrate to the colon. HAMSB

Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced by the fermentation of soluble dietary fiber by gut bacteria, also functions as a histone deacetylase inhibitor known to induce apoptosis and promote differentiation in colon tumor cells. During tumorigenesis, cancer cells undergo metabolic reprogramming to meet energetic and biosynthetic demands, increasing glycolytic metabolism and reducing oxidative metabolism-a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of butyrate on the aggressiveness-related metabolic phenotype of three colon cancer cell lines (LS1034, C2BB

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have long been a significant source of the global disease burden and a leading cause of death and disability. In recent years, the precise microbiome modulation of the gut has made remarkable progress as a new strategy for treating CVDs, especially its production of short-chain fatty acids, the primary way the gut flora affects the organism. Butyrate, one of the critical metabolites of short-chain fatty acids, butyrate uniquely restores intestinal barrier function, suppresses systemic inflammation, promotes immune tolerance, and regulates energy metabolism while

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD), are characterized by progressive neuronal loss associated with neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and epigenetic dysregulation. Emerging evidence suggests that histone deacetylases (HDACs) are overexpressed in these conditions, making HDAC inhibitors (HDACIs) like sodium butyrate (NaB) promising candidates for therapeutic intervention. In addition, NaB has shown beneficial effects in various psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, sugg

Dendritic cells (DCs) can mediate inflammation-related bone resorption that is crucial in the development of periodontitis. Butyrate is a critical by-product of microbes with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we found that butyrate inhibited the activation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced DCs and generation of inflammatory cytokines by DCs. Moreover, butyrate regulated glycolysis in LPS-induced DCs via the G-protein-coupled receptor/hypoxia-inducible factor-1α pathway. In addition, butyrate inhibited the maturation of CD11c+MHC-II+ DCs in vivo, suppressing local inflamma

The relation between nutrition and intestinal health is a subject with an increasing interest in research, as nutritionists need knowledge about how formulation affects different parameters in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). That is why 4 trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of nutrient concentration and a feed additive (sodium butyrate protected with sodium salts of palm fatty acid distillates (PSB, Gustor N'RGY produced by Norel S.A., Spain, dosed at 1 kg/t), on performance, diet digestibility, intestinal morphology, volatile fatty acid concentration (VFA) in the GIT and intestinal

A 9-month-old bull was presented with a history of runting and glucosuria. The bull showed major signs of diabetes mellitus, such as polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, emaciation, glucosuria, and ketonuria, but persistent hyperglycemia was missing. Because in an intravenous glucose tolerance test glucose disappearance was only insignificantly more rapid in a non-diabetic age-matched control than in the diabetic bull a butyrate-stimulated insulin response test was performed. Insulin response to butyrate infusion was markedly impaired in the diabetic bull compared with the non-diabetic bull. At n

Butyrate, a SCFA generated by microbial fermentation of dietary substrates, is produced in the colon of humans and may influence colonic disease. It is possible to manipulate the diet in order to enhance levels of butyrate in various regions of the large intestine. Butyrate is absorbed by colonocytes in the proximal colon via passive diffusion and by active transport mechanisms which are linked to various ion exchange transporters. In the distal colon, the main mechanism of absorption is passive diffusion of the lipid-soluble form. Butyrate and other SCFA are important for the absorption of el

Differentiating agents, including butyrate, phenylacetate and several other agents, have long been known to alter abnormal or transformed cell lines in vitro to a more normal state including phenotype and function. The effect depends on prolonged exposure to a minimum concentration of the agent. In vivo studies of butyrate and analogues have been limited, largely due to rapid in vivo metabolism. A butyrate prodrug, the triglyceride tributyrin, shows great promise in achieving effective and prolonged serum levels when given orally to mice and rats, and has been recommended for human trial. The search for, and discovery of, a physiologic model in which the developmentally regulated switch from fetal to adult globin gene expression could be prevented has resulted in the development of a new class of therapeutic agents, consisting of simple fatty acids, such as butyric acid, for the treatment of the beta-hemoglobinopathies. Butyrate and related drugs stimulate fetal (gamma-) globin gene expression in erythroid cells cultured from patients, and in chicken, ovine, and primate animal models. The butyrates are perhaps the first class of drugs designed to transcriptionally activate spec

Thirty-nine patients took part in a double-blind, between-patient clinical trial to compare clobetasone butyrate, betamethasone phosphate, and placebo eye drops in the treatment of episcleritis. Although from the symptom scores the patients given placebo appeared to do as well as the other patients in the first week of treatment, they did significantly less well after this time. Clobetasone butyrate and betamethasone phosphate eye drops seemed to be equally effective in the treatment of this disease.
