Plasma gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) levels in cholecystokinine-tetrapeptide (CCK-4) induced anxiety.

INTRODUCTION: Dysregulation of the GABA system is supposed to play an important role in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. Moreover, prior investigations revealed an association between GABA plasma levels and experimental induced panic with lactate. To evaluate a possible relationship between plasma GABA and CCK-4 induced panic plasma GABA levels in healthy volunteers were investigated. METHODS: 12 healthy subjects were challenged with 50 micro g CCK-4. Blood samples for determination of plasma GABA were drawn at baseline, 5 and 10 minutes after CCK-4 injection. RESULTS: Plasma GABA leve

Sorbitol-enhanced butyric acid production in mixed-culture anaerobic fermentation of potato peel waste.

The production of bio-based butyric acid mainly relies on NADH as a reducing agent. Enhancing NADH availability is a promising strategy to increase butyric acid yields in mixed-culture fermentation (MCF) systems. Compared with glucose, sorbitol degradation generates one additional mole of NADH per mole. Accordingly, this study investigated the effect of sorbitol addition on butyric acid production in MCF using potato peel waste as feedstock. NADH levels and microbial community dynamics were further analyzed. The results revealed that sorbitol supplementation significantly increased butyric aci

Impact of butyric acid modification on the structural and functional properties of rice starch.

Rice is a food with a high starch content, comprising over 75% of its composition. However, prolonged and excessive consumption of this cereal may lead to elevated blood glucose levels, which can increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Butyric acid (BA), the primary energy source for colonic epithelial cells, exhibits the highest utilization rate among short-chain fatty acids, underscoring its importance for human health. In this study, rice starch butyrate (RSB) samples were synthesized using the aqueous phase process, with broken rice starch (RS) and butyri

Micropatterned polyvinyl butyral membrane for acid-base diodes.

Until now, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel cylinders have been used in electrolyte diodes as a connecting element between the acidic and alkaline reservoirs. In this paper, a new connecting element is reported: a breath figure templated polyvinyl butyral (PVB) membrane prepared with dip-coating from a dichloromethane solution of the polymer in a humid atmosphere. The procedure gives a 1.5-2 μm thick membrane with a hexagonal pattern, the average characteristic length of which is 1 μm. After an acidic etching, it was found to be a good connecting element. The voltage-current characteristics and dyn

Effect of Mn²⁺ levels on caproic acid production during anaerobic fermentation using ethanol and butyric acid as co-substrates.

As an enzyme cofactor, antioxidant, and stabilizer of cellular structures, Mn²⁺is essential for microbial growth, metabolism, and environmental adaptation. In this work, the impact of varying Mn²⁺ levels on caproic acid formation and microbial community shifts was examined under anaerobic fermentation, where ethanol functioned as the electron donor and butyric acid acted as the electron acceptor. It was observed that 0.5 mg/L Mn²⁺ did not significantly affect caproic acid formation, whereas 1.0 mg/L Mn²⁺ improved the reducing capacity of the fermentation system and promoted interspecies electr

Short Communication: Evaluation of Intestinal Release of Butyric Acid from Sodium Butyrate Protected by Salts of Medium-Chain Fatty Acids in Broiler Chickens.

Butyric acid has received great attention as a feed additive to maintain or increase the gut integrity and health of broiler chickens. Particularly, the protection of butyrate is under research to allow slow intestinal release of butyric acid and to promote its beneficial effects throughout the intestine. This study evaluated in vivo the intestinal release of butyric acid from sodium butyrate protected by salts of medium-chain fatty acid in broilers. Brilliant blue was used as an inert marker, so it was included in the feed additive that broilers ingested for two days. The gastrointestinal tra

Mechanistic basis and preliminary practice of butyric acid and butyrate sodium to mitigate gut inflammatory diseases: a comprehensive review.

A key event featured in the early stage of chronic gut inflammatory diseases is the disordered recruitment and excess accumulation of immune cells in the gut lamina propria. This process is followed by the over-secretion of pro-inflammatory factors and the prolonged overactive inflammatory responses. Growing evidence has suggested that gut inflammatory diseases may be mitigated by butyric acid (BA) or butyrate sodium (NaB). Laboratory studies show that BA and NaB can enhance gut innate immune function through G-protein-mediated signaling pathways while mitigating the overactive inflammatory re

Gray matter gamma-hydroxy-butyric acid and glutamate reflect beta-amyloid burden at old age.

UNLABELLED: Gamma-hydroxy-butyric acid (GABA) and glutamate are neurotransmitters with essential importance for cognitive processing. Here, we investigate relationships between GABA, glutamate, and brain ß-amyloid (Aß) burden before clinical manifestation of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thirty cognitively healthy adults (age 69.9 ± 6 years) received high-resolution atlas-based 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) at ultra-high magnetic field strength of 7 Tesla for gray matter-specific assessment of GABA and glutamate. We assessed Aß burden with positron emission tomography and risk

Butyric Acid Modulates Gut Microbiota to Alleviate Inflammation and Secondary Bone Loss in Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease that primarily affects the sacroiliac joints and axial skeleton. While the exact pathogenetic mechanism of AS remains unclear, previous reports have highlighted the involvement of genetic factors, immune responses, and gut microbiota dysregulation in the development of this condition. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are microbial fermentation products derived from sugar, protein, and dietary fibers, play a role in maintaining the intestinal barrier function and reducing inflammatory responses. The a

Novel Lauric Acid-Butyric Structural Lipid Inhibits Inflammation: Small Intestinal Microbes May Be Important Mediators.

SCOPE: Butyric acid (C4) and lauric acid (C12) are recognized as functional fatty acids, while the health benefits of the structural lipids they constitute remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, lauric acid-butyric structural lipid (SLBL ) is synthesized through ultrasound-assisted enzyme-catalyzed acidolysis and its health benefits are evaluated in a high-fat diet-induced obesity mouse model. SLBL and its physical mixture (MLBL ) do not significantly inhibit obesity in mice. However, SLBL treatment increases the ratio of n3/n6 fatty acids in the liver and improves obesity-induce

Evaluation of Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) and Glibenclamide Combination Therapy in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Type 1-diabetes (T1D) is characterized by autoimmune destruction of β-cells and loss of endogenous insulin. A lifelong dependency on exogenous supply of insulin presents a great challenge in the pharmacotherapy of T1D that elicits a quest for alternative therapies, which can protect β-cells and revive their insulinogenic functions. GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) has immunoprotective and β-cell regenerative capabilities. Co-administration of an insulin secretagogue, such as glibenclamide (Glib), along with GABA may enhance the pancreatic insulin output in T1D. OBJECTIVE: The present st

Acupuncture ameliorates synovitis in mice with collagen-induced arthritis by repressing ferroptosis via butyric acid.

It has been reported that the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be ameliorated by acupuncture, an external treatment of traditional Chinese medicine. However, the immune mechanism underlying its action is elusive. Accordingly, this study investigated the role and mechanism of manual acupuncture (MA) in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. The results demonstrated that MA or NaB treatment reduced Articular Index scores and right paw thickness and alleviated synovial inflammation and cartilage damage. MA or NaB treatment altered the content and relative abundance of short-chain fatt

4-Phenyl-butyric Acid Inhibits Japanese Encephalitis Virus Replication via Inhibiting Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Response.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection causes host endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) reaction, and then induces cell apoptosis through the UPR pathway, invading the central nervous system and causing an inflammation storm. The endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibitor, 4-phenyl-butyric acid (4-PBA), has an inhibitory effect on the replication of flavivirus. Here, we studied the effect of 4-PBA on JEV infection both in vitro and vivo. The results showed that 4-PBA treatment could significantly decrease the titer of JEV, inhibit the expression of the JEV NS3 protein (in vitro, p < 0.01) and r

Structure-activity relationship of 17 structural analogues of n-butyric acid upon c-myc expression.

Terminal differentiation of hematopoietic cells in vivo and in vitro is almost invariably accompanied by down-regulated expression of the c-myc proto-oncogene. Constitutive expression of c-myc in tumor cells inhibits terminal differentiation and maintains proliferation. In Burkitt's lymphoma, chromosomal translocations cause a deregulation of the c-myc gene through fusion of this locus with one of the immunoglobulin gene loci. However, the down-regulation of c-myc by n-butyric acid, a potent inducer of differentiation, is also observed in BL cells. Unlike other inducers of differentiation such

THE BUTYRIC ACID TEST FOR SYPHILIS IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF METASYPHILITIC AND OTHER NERVOUS DISORDERS.

1. In the secondary and tertiary stages of syphilis without direct involvement of the nervous system the cerebro-spinal fluid yielded the butyric acid reaction of feeble intensity. The fluid under these conditions gave neither a positive cytodiagnosis nor the Wassermann test for syphilis. 2. The cerebro-spinal fluid of cases of hereditary syphilis showed a positive butyric reaction in about 90 per cent. and a positive Wassermann test in about 80 per cent. of the cases examined. 3. The cerebro-spinal fluid of cases of cerebral and spinal syphilis yielded the butyric acid reaction and the cytodi

Whole-body pharmacokinetics of HDAC inhibitor drugs, butyric acid, valproic acid and 4-phenylbutyric acid measured with carbon-11 labeled analogs by PET.

The fatty acids, n-butyric acid (BA), 4-phenylbutyric acid (PBA) and valproic acid (VPA, 2-propylpentanoic acid) have been used for many years in the treatment of a variety of CNS and peripheral organ diseases including cancer. New information that these drugs alter epigenetic processes through their inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs) has renewed interest in their biodistribution and pharmacokinetics and the relationship of these properties to their therapeutic and side effect profiles. In order to determine the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of these drugs in primates, we synthe

Curcumin-Loaded Ligand-Conjugated Chitosan Nanoparticles: A Comparative Study of Folic Acid, Phenylalanine, and Butyric Acid Conjugates for Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer therapy requires drug delivery systems that improve treatment efficacy and minimize systemic toxicity. In this study, chitosan-based nanoparticles were fabricated and functionalized with folic acid (FA), phenylalanine (PA), and butyric acid (BA) to enhance the delivery of curcumin to Caco-2 cancer cells. The nanoparticles were prepared using an ionic gelation method, and their physicochemical properties, cellular uptake efficiency, and cytotoxicity-including safety evaluation against normal HIEC-6 cells-were investigated. Results showed that ligand conjugation significantly i

Potentiation of retinoic acid-induced differentiation of human acute promyelocytic leukemia NB4 cells by butyric acid, tributyrin, and hexamethylene bisacetamide.

Cytodifferentiation therapy by all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) for acute promyelocytic leukemia patients is encouraging in spite of several limitations preventing better clinical outcomes. Most patients in complete remission induced by RA experience relapse and resist further treatment with RA. This resistance primarily is due to a systemic self-induced catabolism of RA, which interferes with the maintenance of effective plasma levels of RA. In this report we explored the possibility that treatment with combinations of RA and other differentiation agents may induce differentiation at lower RA con

Butyric acid-based self-assembling nanoparticles: a potential strategy to prevent development of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age and cannot currently be cured or prevented fundamentally. Prenatal androgen exposure is a key factor in PCOS development, and both PCOS patients and animal models exhibit gut microbiota alterations. We previously demonstrated that prenatally androgenized (PNA) model mice display changes of gut microbiota before the manifestation of PCOS phenotypes, suggesting that an intervention targeting gut microbiota from the early stage of life can prevent development of PCOS.
