Degradation of forage chicory by ruminal fibrolytic bacteria.

AIMS: Determine the susceptibility of forage chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) to degradation by ruminal fibrolytic bacteria and measure the effects on cell-wall pectic polysaccharides. METHODS AND RESULTS: Large segments of fresh forage chicory were degraded in vitro by Lachnospira multiparus and Fibrobacter succinogenes, but not by Ruminococcus flavefaciens or Butyrivibrio hungatei. Cell-wall pectins were degraded extensively (95%) and rapidly by L. multiparus with a simultaneous release of uronic acids and the pectin-derived neutral monosaccharides arabinose, galactose and rhamnose. Fibrobact

Distinct Rumen Microbial Features and Host Metabolic Responses in Three Cervid Species.

Rumen microbiota is pivotal for nutrient metabolism and physiological adaptation in ruminants. This study investigated the rumen microbial community, fermentation parameters, and serum biochemistry of three Cervid species-Sika deer (Cervus nippon), Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and Milu deer (Elaphurus davidianus) (n = 5/group)-fed an identical diet. Using 16S rRNA sequencing and biochemical analyses, we found that while Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were dominant phyla across species. Sika deer and Milu deer exhibited significantly higher microbial diversity and abundance of ca

Gut Microbiome Changes in Patients With Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome is a complex system within the human gastrointestinal tract. The bacteria play a significant role in human health, and some can promote inflammation and pathologic processes through chemical interactions or metabolites. Gut microbiome dysbiosis has been linked to some neurological and other diseases. Here we aimed to examine microbiome differences between patients with a progressive neurological disorder, idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), compared with healthy controls (CO). METHODS: We recruited 37 neurologically healthy CO and 10 patients with s

Gut Microbiome Composition in Dystonia Patients.

Dystonia is a movement disorder in which patients have involuntary abnormal movements or postures. Non-motor symptoms, such as psychiatric symptoms, sleep problems and fatigue, are common. We hypothesise that the gut microbiome might play a role in the pathophysiology of the (non-)motor symptoms in dystonia via the gut-brain axis. This exploratory study investigates the composition of the gut microbiome in dystonia patients compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, the abundance of neuro-active metabolic pathways, which might be implicated in the (non-)motor symptoms, was investigated. We per

Metagenomic analysis reveals patterns and hosts of antibiotic resistance in different pig farms.

In actual production environments, antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) are abundant in pig manure, which can form transmission chains through animals, the environment, and humans, thereby threatening human health. Therefore, based on metagenomic analysis methods, ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were annotated in pig manure samples from 6 pig farms in 3 regions of Shanxi Province, and the potential hosts of ARGs were analyzed. The results showed that a total of 14 ARG types were detected, including 182 ARG subtypes, among which tetracycline, phenol, aminoglycoside, and macrolide resistanc

Enrichment and Isolation of Rumen Bacteria That Reduce trans- Aconitic Acid to Tricarballylic Acid.

Bacteria from the bovine rumen capable of reducing trans-aconitate to tricarballylate were enriched in an anaerobic chemostat containing rumen fluid medium and aconitate. After 9 days at a dilution rate of 0.07 h, the medium was diluted and plated in an anaerobic glove box. Three types of isolates were obtained from the plates (a crescent-shaped organism, a pleomorphic rod, and a spiral-shaped organism), and all three produced tricarballylate in batch cultures that contained glucose and trans-aconitate. In glucose-limited chemostats (0.10 h), trans-aconitate reduction was associated with a dec

The oral microbiome is associated with stress, adversity, and mental health in young adults.

Acute stress responsivity and early-life adversity are both associated with oral microbiome differences that lead to increased mental and physical health risk. However, the joint association of stress responsivity and early adversity with the oral microbiome is not yet understood. Additionally, while the link between the oral microbiome and cortisol has been investigated, another major component of stress responsivity - the parasympathetic response - has been relatively neglected. Therefore, we examined parasympathetic functioning during an acute stressor, retrospective early adversity, oral m

Wheat bran promotes enrichment within the human colonic microbiota of butyrate-producing bacteria that release ferulic acid.

Cereal fibres such as wheat bran are considered to offer human health benefits via their impact on the intestinal microbiota. We show here by 16S rRNA gene-based community analysis that providing amylase-pretreated wheat bran as the sole added energy source to human intestinal microbial communities in anaerobic fermentors leads to the selective and progressive enrichment of a small number of bacterial species. In particular, OTUs corresponding to uncultured Lachnospiraceae (Firmicutes) related to Eubacterium xylanophilum and Butyrivibrio spp. were strongly enriched (by five to 160 fold) over 4

Acetatifactor muris gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from the intestine of an obese mouse.

We used selective agar media for culturing bacteria from the caecum of mice fed a high calorie diet. In addition to the isolation of Enterobacteriaceae growing on a medium containing cholesterol and bile salts, we focused on the characterization of strain CT-m2(T), which, based on 16S rDNA analysis, did not appear to correspond to any currently described organisms. The isolate belongs to the Clostridium cluster XIV and is most closely related to members of the Lachnospiraceae, including the genera Anaerostipes, Blautia, Butyrivibrio, Clostridium, Coprococcus, Eubacterium, Robinsoniella, Rosebu

Pre-Diagnostic Saliva Microbiota of School-Aged Children Who Developed Type 1 Diabetes or Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Altered commensal microbiota composition has been associated with pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but the causal relationship is still unclear. To search for potential pre-diagnostic biomarkers for pediatric T1D or IBD, we compared microbiota in saliva samples in a nested case-control design comprising children developing T1D (nchildren = 52) or IBD (nchildren = 21) and controls with a similar age, sex, and residential area (nchildren = 79). Multi-omics analysis of the mechanism of alfalfa and wheat-induced rumen flatulence in Xizang sheep.

Rumen flatulence is a diet-related rumen disease in ruminants. This study induced a rumen flatulence model in Xizang sheep using alfalfa (HRF) and wheatgrass (MRF). The aim was to understand the rumen microbiota diversity in healthy and pathological states, host-microbiota interactions, and the molecular mechanisms of rumen flatulence. Results showed that the pH in the HRF and MRF groups was lower than that in the natural grass group (LRF). SCFA concentrations varied between groups: in HRF, 2-BA and CA increased; in MRF, 4-MVA and 5-MCA rose. Microbial analysis indicated that the alpha- and be

Dietary secoisolariciresinol diglucoside crude extract improves growth through modulating rumen bacterial community and epithelial development in lambs.

BACKGROUND: Flaxseed lignans, types of polyphenolic compounds, primarily consist of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). Natural plant extracts are becoming increasingly important as feed for ruminant animals. An underutilized plant bioactive component, SDG shows promising benefits for young ruminant production. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of SDG on rumen fermentation using an in vitro rumen simulation technology. Additionally, we tested the effects of SDG (0.20 g kg-1 body weight) on rumen development and production performance of lambs in a production setting. RE
