Calbindin (CB) is a calcium binding protein reported to protect dopaminergic neurons from degeneration. Although a direct link between CB content and differential vulnerability of dopaminergic neurons has long been accepted, factors other than CB have also been suggested, particularly those related to the dopamine transporter. Indeed, several studies have reported that CB levels are not causally related to the differential vulnerability of dopaminergic neurons against neurotoxins. Here we have used dual stains for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and CB in 3 control and 3 MPTP-treated monkeys to visu

1. The aim of the present study was to investigate expression and localisation of a 28-kDa calcium-binding protein (CaBP-D28k) related to active calcium (Ca) absorption, in the entire intestine of egg-laying hens. 2. Western blotting analysis showed that the entire intestine expressed CaBP-D28k to the following degree: duodenum > jejunum > caecum > ileum > colon. Immunohistochemistry showed strong CaBP-D28k localisation in enterocytes along the villus tip-crypt axis in the duodenum and in villus tips in the caecum and colon. The jejunum and ileum had moderate localisation with respect to the n

Post-mortem studies have provided evidence for abnormalities of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic system in schizophrenia. The calcium-binding proteins (CBPs), parvalbumin (PV), calbindin (CB) and calretinin (CR) can be used as markers for specific subpopulations of GABAergic neurons in the brain. Isolation rearing of rats is a non-pharmacological, non-lesion manipulation that leads to deficits in prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex (PPI) and other behavioural and neurochemical alterations reminiscent of schizophrenia. Female rats were reared in social housing (groups of three) or

The subpopulation of primary vestibular afferents (PVA) displaying immunoreactivity for the calcium binding protein Calbindin D-28k (Calb) is constituted of particularly large bipolar neurons in the vestibular ganglion (VG) that innervate the central regions of the vestibular end organs exclusively via calyx endings on type I vestibular hair cells. These large-diameter PVA are characterized by irregular spontaneous discharge patterns and predominantly phasic firing properties with respect to natural vestibular stimulation. The present study describes the complete course and terminations of Cal

This review focuses particularly on abnormalities of Ca-binding proteins in transporting epithelia, which have been observed in various models of experimental hypertension. The enterocyte content of integral membrane Ca(2+)-binding protein (IMCAL) and calbindin-9k and the renal tubular calbindin-28k content have been shown to be decreased in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), compared with normotensive control rats (WKY). Similarly, calmodulin content was decreased in several tissues including the intestine; however, calmodulin activity was increased. In recent studies, the authors exam

Calcium-binding proteins calbindin D28k (CaBP) and parvalbumin (PV) were localized in neurons of the monkey hippocampal formation. CaBP immunoreactivity is present in all granule cells and in a large proportion of CA1 and CA2 pyramidal neurons, as well as in a distinct population of local circuit neurons. In the dentate gyrus, CaBP-immunoreactive nongranule cells are present in the molecular layer and in the hilar region, but they do not include the pyramidal basket cells at the hilar border. In the Ammon's horn, CaBP-positive, nonpyramidal neurons are more frequent in the CA3 area than in any

The toothless (tl) rat is a nonlethal osteopetrotic mutation characterized by systemic skeletal sclerosis, growth plate morphology suggestive of rickets, and morphological evidence of reduced osteoclastic bone resorption. Vitamin D metabolites, serum calcium and phosphorus levels, and the developmental appearance of vitamin D-dependent intestinal calcium binding protein (calbindin-D9k) was studied in normal and mutant rats of tl stock from 7 to 35 days of age. 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25-(OH)2D3] was found to be significantly elevated in mutant animals by 7 days of age (71 +/- 9 pM, tl/tl v

The present study was undertaken to localize and investigate the endocrine control of immunoreactive 9K calbindin-D9k in the fallopian tube (oviduct) of the rat. Rat fallopian tubes were excised with the uterus, immediately fixed by freeze-substitution, and processed for immunoperoxidase staining. Staining employed a rabbit antiserum against purified rat intestinal calbindin-D9k and the streptavidin-biotin technique. Calbindin-D9k immunoreactivity was localized to luminal epithelial cells of the fallopian tube of mature rats, with no staining observed in other tissue layers of the tube. Epithe

The vitamin D-induced calcium-binding protein calbindin-D (CaBP) was localized immunohistochemically in some but not all of the cell bodies and axons within the intestinalis nerve of the chicken. Unlike other nerve tissue thus far examined, the CaBP content of the intestinalis nerve was decreased in vitamin D deficiency and increased in chicken adapted to a calcium-deficient diet. These changes are qualitatively similar to the pattern of response of enterocytes. The inclusion of calcium-containing solutions within the duodenal lumen caused, directly or indirectly, a decrease in the amount of C

BACKGROUND: The intrinsic cardiac nervous system is a complex system that plays a critical role in the regulation of cardiac physiologic parameters and has been shown to contribute to cardiac arrhythmias. To date, several types of neurons with distinct neurochemical and electrophysiologic phenotypes have been identified. However, no study has correlated the neurochemical phenotype to a specific electrophysiologic behavior. Calbindin-D28k, a calcium-binding protein, is expressed in numerous cardiac neurons.
OBJECTIVE: Given that changes in neuronal excitability have been associated with arrhyt

Since the discovery of calbindin release into the urine during renal injury, there has been growing interest in the utility of this protein as a biomarker of nephrotoxicity. However, little is known about the intrarenal regulation of the release and expression of this calcium-regulating protein during kidney injury. We sought to characterize the time-dependent expression and excretion of the protein calbindin in the distal tubule in comparison to kidney injury molecule-1 (Kim-1), a protein in the proximal tubule, in mice treated with cisplatin. Urine, blood, and kidneys were collected from mal

Pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease include memory deficits, accumulation of amyloid beta (Abeta) plaques, the appearance of neurofibrillary tangles, and dysregulation of calcium homeostasis, which has been linked to mutations in the presenilin gene that code for presenilin (PS) proteins. PSs are a family of multi-pass transmembrane proteins where normal presenilins (PS1 and PS2) are highly localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Several past studies have explored alterations in long-term potentiation (LTP), a proposed molecular correlate of memory, and in behavioral tests of sp

These studies were carried out to characterize the properties of gamma-aminobutyric acidA (GABA(A)) receptors on guinea pig intestinal myenteric neurons maintained in primary culture. In addition, the type of neuron expressing GABA(A) receptors was identified using immunohistochemical methods. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings of currents elicited by GABA and acetylcholine (ACh) were obtained using pipettes containing Neurobiotin. After electrophysiological studies, neurons were processed for localization of calbindin-D28K-immunoreactivity (calbindin-ir). GABA (1 mM) and ACh (3 mM) caused inwa

Circadian rhythmicity in mammals, is controlled by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus. We previously described a discrete subnucleus in the core of the hamster SCN containing calbindin-D28k-positive cells which are fos-positive in response to a light pulse. Ablation of this subnucleus results in loss of circadian locomotor rhythmicity even when other parts of the SCN are spared. Here we show that Tau mutant hamsters have significantly more calbindin-D28k in the SCN than do wild type hamsters, and that SCN calbindin-immunoreactivity in the SCN increases in the dark. This is co

Parvalbumin- and calbindin D-28k-immunoreactive (-ir) innervation was examined in orofacial tissues of the rat. Labial and facial skins were devoid of the calcium-binding protein (CaBP)-ir nerve endings, while the infraorbital and mental nerves contained numerous parvalbumin-ir axons. Labial and gingival mucosae were also devoid of the CaBP-ir nerve endings. The buccal mucosa and incisive papilla contained both encapsulated and unencapsulated endings, while the hard palate mucosa excluding the incisive papilla contained only unencapsulated endings. Encapsulated endings were found just beneath

Parvalbumin- and calbindin D-28k-immunoreactivities (ir) were examined in the glossopharyngeal and vagal sensory ganglia (petrosal, nodose and jugular ganglia), the carotid sinus nerve and the carotid body. Parvalbumin-ir nerve cells were mostly localized in the petrosal and nodose ganglia and were rare in the jugular ganglion. Calbindin D-28k-ir nerve cells were found in moderate and large numbers in the petrosal and nodose ganglia, respectively. Only a few calbindin D-28k-ir nerve cells were observed in the jugular ganglion. The carotid sinus nerve and carotid body contained numerous calbind

Calbindin-D28k, calretinin, and recoverin, three intracellular calcium-binding proteins belonging to the troponin C/calmodulin superfamily, were immunohistochemically localized in chick pineal during development [from embryonic day 16 (E16) to postnatal day 14 (P14)]. At E18, only calretinin immunoreactivity could be detected in nuclei from follicular pinealocytes. With development, calretinin immunoreactivity expanded from nucleus to cytoplasm, and calretinin immuno-positive cell number increased. At P14 almost al pinealocytes were calretinin positive. Calbindin-D28k immunoreactivity was not

Calretinin and calbindin-D28k are homologous calcium-binding proteins, each present in a variety of neurons in the brain. Their distributions in the rat brain have been compared at the cellular level to determine whether they tend to occur in the same or in different cells, and to determine whether calbindin-positive cells show any common features once crossreaction with calretinin has been eliminated. The results show great heterogeneity. Most cells which contain one of the proteins do not contain the other, but many cells do contain both; even in the ventral cochlear nucleus, where there is
