Two groups of cats were inoculated oro-nasally with one of two isolates of feline calicivirus (FCV) from clinical cases of chronic stomatitis. All cats developed signs typical of acute FCV infection; namely, ocular and nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, and marked oral ulceration. None of the cats shed virus beyond 28 days. Seronegative control cats were then infected with a lower dose of one isolate, but again only acute signs were seen and no carriers produced. The original cats were then re-infected with the heterologous isolate. As before, only signs of acute disease were seen, but the range

Despite its common occurrence, the aetiology of chronic gingivostomatitis in cats remains uncertain. Aetiology is likely multifactorial, and several infectious agents may be associated with chronic gingivostomatitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of feline calicivirus (FCV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline herpesvirus (FHV), and Bartonella henselae (B. henselae) in cats with chronic gingivostomatitis and in an age-matched control group. In addition, other factors, e. g., environmental conditions were investigated. In 52 ca

This study evaluated the prevalence of feline calicivirus (FCV) antibodies and response to vaccination in healthy adult cats. Cats >1 year (n = 111) that had not been vaccinated within 12 months of enrollment in the study received a vaccine containing inactivated FCV antigen strains 431 and G1. Antibodies were determined on Days 0, 7, and 28 by virus neutralization (VN) using FCV isolate KS20, and by broad spectrum blocking FCV enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Factors associated with the presence of antibodies and vaccine response were determined by uni- and multivariate analysis. Pr

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly contagious pathogen widely circulating in cat populations. FCV has been shown to be able to evade the host immune response through different mechanisms. As a result, following the acute phase of infection, some cats remain persistently infected or experience reinfection cycles with variants of the same strain or with distinct field FCVs. These animals may become asymptomatic carriers, assuming a critical role in virus transmission and posing a significant risk to susceptible cats, particularly in high-density settings. Typical clinical signs of FCV infectio

Feline herpesvirus (FHV) and feline calicivirus (FCV) are the primary causative agents of respiratory disease in cats. Although fatal respiratory disease is frequently observed in routine pathological diagnostics, the role of viral involvement is rarely investigated. This study aimed to assess the involvement of FHV and FCV in necropsied cats with fatal respiratory disease using immunohistochemistry, and to characterize the affected tissues, along pathological and epidemiological findings of the positive cats. Sixty cats were assessed. Immunolabeling for FHV was observed in 12 cats, for FCV in

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a contagious cat pathogen that causes oral ulceration and/or upper respiratory disease. In this study, we collected 61 samples from a pet hospital in Beijing and used PCR or RT-PCR to detect FCV and feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1). Approximately 44.3% (27/61) of the samples were FCV positive, and 23.0% (14/61) were coinfected with FCV and FHV-1. FCV was isolated from 15 samples. One isolate was from a cat with virulent systemic disease (VSD) signs, and 14 isolates were from cats with stomatitis or upper respiratory diseases. The range of genome sequence identity among

Little information regarding the effectiveness of UV radiation on the inactivation of caliciviruses and enteric adenoviruses is available. Analysis of human calicivirus resistance to disinfectants is hampered by the lack of animal or cell culture methods that can determine the viruses' infectivity. The inactivation kinetics of enteric adenovirus type 40 (AD40), coliphage MS-2, and feline calicivirus (FCV), closely related to the human caliciviruses based on nucleic acid organization and capsid architecture, were determined after exposure to low-pressure UV radiation in buffered demand-free (BD

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV) and feline calicivirus (FCV) are significant pathogens causing upper respiratory tract disease in cats. Existing inactivated or modified live vaccines against FCV and FHV face limitations in safety and efficacy. To overcome these challenges, a recombinant strain FHV ΔgI/gE-FCV VP1 was developed by deleting the gI/gE gene and concurrently expressing FCV VP1, using the FHV WX19 strain as the parental virus. Results indicated the presence of FCV VP1 in FHV ΔgI/gE-FCV VP1-infected CRFK cells, confirmed through protein blotting and immunofluorescence assays and virus

The limping syndrome is occasionally reported during acute feline calicivirus (FCV) infections or as consequence of vaccination. In this retrospective study, three clinical cases of lameness in household cats naturally infected by FCV were described and phylogeny of the virus were investigated by analysing the hypervariable E region of the ORF2 viral gene. Cats were diagnosed with polyarthritis and FCV RNA or antigens were detected in symptomatic joints. One cat, euthanized for ethical reasons, underwent a complete post-mortem examination and was subjected to histopathological and immunohistoc

BACKGROUND: Feline calicivirus (FCV) is widespread throughout the world. An FCV infection is associated with conjunctivitis, rhinitis, and mouth ulcers that can lead to the animal's death. Because vaccination is not always effective, it is necessary to monitor the infection regularly.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the FCV epizootic situation in the Moscow metropolitan area by conducting a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the virus isolates.
METHODS: Samples from 6213 animals were examined by a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. For phylogenetic analysis, 12 nucleotide seque

Recently, in the USA, virulent mutants of feline calicivirus (FCV) have been identified as the cause of a severe and acute virulent systemic disease, characterised by jaundice, oedema and high mortality in groups of cats. This severe manifestation of FCV disease has so far only been reported in the USA. However, in 2003, an outbreak of disease affected a household of four adult cats and an adult cat from a neighbouring household in the UK. Three of the adult cats in the household and the neighbouring cat developed clinical signs including pyrexia (39.5 to 40.5 degrees C), lameness, voice loss,

Feline upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) is a significant health concern in crowded environments, such as catteries and shelters. Feline calicivirus (FCV), which is endemic in domestic cats, is a major contributor to URTD and can cause a range of diseases that vary in severity. Unlike many other caliciviruses, including human caliciviruses and noroviruses, FCV replicates efficiently in cell culture and is a well-established model for studying calicivirus-host cell interactions. In this study, RNA-sequencing was used to characterise host and viral transcription profiles in Crandell-Rees fe

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a major respiratory pathogen in felids, which brings an economic burden to the world, such as increasing veterinary costs, strict epidemic management, and increasing animal mortality. The poor feeding management in China makes the highly virulent systemic feline calicivirus (VS-FCV) spread rapidly, thus becoming a public health problem. We examined the factors driving FCV virulence enhancement. We combined global phylogenetic reconstruction with experimental validation. Bayesian analysis classified existing FCV isolates into two genotypes: GI and GII. GII predominat

OBJECTIVES: Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV) and Chlamydia felis are involved in feline upper respiratory tract disease (FURTD). Clinical signs caused by these agents can overlap, and the involvement of certain pathogens is often unpredictable. The objectives of this study were to compare detection rates of FHV-1, FCV and C felis at different sampling sites, and to investigate the correlation between positive test results and clinical signs in cats with FURTD.
METHODS: Swabs were taken from the nose, pharynx, tongue and conjunctiva of 104 cats with signs of FURTD. Real-t

Interferons (IFNs) can inhibit most, if not all, viral infections by eliciting the transcription of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly contagious pathogen of cats and a surrogate for Norwalk virus. Interferon efficiently inhibits the replication of FCV, but the mechanism of the antiviral activity is poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the anti-FCV activity of ten ISGs, whose antiviral activities were previously reported. The results showed that interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF1) can significantly inhibit the replication of FCV, whereas the

Feline calicivirus (FCV) and Feline herpesvirus type I (FHV-I) are the main pathogens causing upper respiratory tract infections in cats, and some wild animals. These two viruses always coinfection and cause serious harm to pet industry and wild animals protection. Established a rapid and accurate differential diagnosis method is crucial for prevention and control of disease, however, the current main detection method for these two viruses, either is low sensitivity (immunochromatographic strip), or is time-consuming and cannot differential diagnosis (conventional single PCR). Feline calicivirus (FCV) is among the few members of the Caliciviridae family that can replicate efficiently in vitro. Our recent studies have found the Transferrin Receptor Protein (TFRC) is an entry receptor that facilitates the internalization of FCV. To explore the potential involvement of additional host factors in conjunction with TFRC during the viral entry process, we identified metabotropic glutamate receptor 2 (mGluR2) as a specific interacting partner for both TFRC and the FCV VP1 protein by Co-IP analysis. Our findings indicate that the downregulation of mGluR2, along with its down

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is one of the most widespread pathogens affecting feline animals. Currently, FCV is believed to be divisible into two genotypes, with prevalent strains encompassing both GI and GII. Vaccination is the primary means of preventing FCV infection, yet traditional inactivated or attenuated vaccines theoretically pose potential safety concerns. In this study, a virus-like particles (VLPs), named DL39-VLPs, was constructed, using the VP1 gene of FCV DL39 strain with broad neutralizing and protective properties as a template through insect cell expression system. Cats were imm
