Callosal warning syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical and imaging findings in a patient with an initial fluctuating disconnection syndrome due to corpus callosal ischemia that ultimately culminated in infarction with persistent symptoms. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old, hypertensive, right-handed man presented with transient, stereotyped symptoms of corpus callosal disconnection (intermanual conflict, apraxia, dysgraphia and construction difficulties in his left hand). Serial magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrated the ischemic nature of the initial fluctuating symptoms and later showed callosal infarction when

Reading in callosal agenesis.

It has been suggested that deficits in explicit phonological processing are causal in developmental dyslexia. Deficits in such skills have been reported in developmental phonological dyslexia, though not in developmental surface dyslexia. The reading performance of two children with callosal agenesis, who have been previously shown to have impairments on rhyming tasks, are reported. Neither child is dyslexic in the traditional sense, since word reading levels are appropriate for age. However, both children have impaired development of the phonological reading route despite normal lexical skill

An Arabidopsis callose synthase.

Beta-1,3-glucan polymers are major structural components of fungal cell walls, while cellulosic beta-1,4-glucan is the predominant polysaccharide in plant cell walls. Plant beta-1,3-glucan, called callose, is produced in pollen and in response to pathogen attack and wounding, but it has been unclear whether callose synthases can also produce cellulose and whether plant cellulose synthases may also produce beta-1,3-glucans. We describe here an Arabidopsis gene, AtGsl5, encoding a plasma membrane-localized protein homologous to yeast beta-1,3-glucan synthase whose expression partially complement

[A case of callosal apraxia without agraphia and acquired stuttering associated with callosal infarction].

We report a 52-year-old right-handed man with cerebral infarction of the right anterior cerebral artery area. The MRI findings showed cerebral infarction in the trunk of the right corpus callosum, although some part of the posterior half of the trunk was spared. Some part of right precuneal gyrus, cingulate gyrus were also involved. The clinical feature of this case is characterized by following two points. First, although callosal apraxia is usually accompanied by agraphia, he showed apraxia with the left hand, but showed no agraphia. Secondary, he showed speech dysfluency mainly characterize

Phonemic discrimination in callosal agenesis.

Children with callosal agenesis have congenital absence of the corpus callosum. Previous analyses of these subjects have shown that they have significant difficulty on rhyming tasks and tasks of explicit sound organisation. This study investigated whether such difficulties were also manifested on simpler tasks requiring the discrimination and repetition of similar sounding linguistic material. None of the acallosal children tested performed at a normal level across tasks. This suggests a possible impairment in the initial registration or analysis of auditory material and possible bases for thi

Corpus callosal abnormalities in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Corpus callosal abnormalities (CCA) in dogs have been only sporadically reported and are poorly characterized. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical presentation and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of dogs with CCA. ANIMALS: Fifteen client-owned dogs. METHODS: Retrospective study. Records of the contributing institutions were reviewed to identify dogs diagnosed with malformations affecting the corpus callosum (CC); cases in which the CCA was thought to be secondary were excluded. RESULTS: The most represented breeds were Staffordshire Bull Terriers (5

Callosal apraxia without agraphia.

We describe a patient with left unilateral ideomotor apraxia without left-sided agraphia caused by a callosal lesion that was demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical features, together with data in the literature, suggest that the callosal fibers for writing are concentrated in the posterior corpus callosum, while those for praxis cross in the more rostral part of the posterior half of the callosum.

MRI of corpus callosal syndromes.

Six patients, 6 to 13 years old, with corpus callosal abnormalities diagnosed by electroencephalography or CT were studied with a 0.15 T MR imager to determine the effectiveness of MRI in evaluating midline anomalies. Spin-echo images in the coronal, axial, and sagittal planes were obtained in two patients with Aicardi's syndrome and partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, in one patient with Dandy-Walker syndrome, and in two patients with septooptic dysplasia. Inversion recovery and spin-echo images were obtained in one patient with lipoma of the corpus callosum. Partial agenesis of the corp

Joint preserving procedures for painful plantar callosities in patients with flexible cavovarus foot.

BACKGROUND: The outcome of a constant joint preserving procedure for painful plantar callosities with cavovarus foot remains unclear. METHODS: Eleven patients (11 feet) who underwent lateral displacement calcaneal osteotomy (LDCO), dorsiflexion first metatarsal osteotomy (DFMO), and plantar fasciotomy (PF), simultaneously were included. The presence of painful callosities, heel alignment of standing (HA), and the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot ankle/hindfoot (JSSF) score were evaluated. Radiographically, the talonavicular coverage angle (TNCA), lateral talo-first metatarsal angle (L

[Frequency, morphology, pathogenesis and complications of silicotic callosities (phthisis atra). A disappearing disease].

Over a period of approximately 30 years we have compared the frequency of Miner's phthisis in the coal mining areas of Aachen and the Ruhr area of Essen and have investigated a total of approximately 600 lungs with silicosis. In cases of silicosis grades II-III and III we found liquefaction in 36% of the callosities but in cases of silicosis I-II and II in only 4-7%. Liquefaction of callosities, or phthisis atra, was found slightly more often in the Ruhr area than in the area of Aachen. If the liquefied silicotic material is expectorated from the bronchial tubes, a cavern-like cavity develops

Developmental malformation of the corpus callosum: a review of typical callosal development and examples of developmental disorders with callosal involvement.

This review provides an overview of the involvement of the corpus callosum (CC) in a variety of developmental disorders that are currently defined exclusively by genetics, developmental insult, and/or behavior. I begin with a general review of CC development, connectivity, and function, followed by discussion of the research methods typically utilized to study the callosum. The bulk of the review concentrates on specific developmental disorders, beginning with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC)-the only condition diagnosed exclusively by callosal anatomy. This is followed by a review of se

Callosal ideomotor apraxia in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Impaired ability to perform skilled movements with the left upper limb in patients with corpus callosum injury has been well described (callosal apraxia) with some displaying spatial-temporal errors primarily in response to verbal commands (verbal callosal disconnection apraxia), with imitation, and when using actual tools (callosal ideomotor apraxia). Additionally some patients with callosal injury also make content errors when selecting and using the incorrect tool with their left upper limb (callosal conceptual apraxia). Interestingly, patients with Alzheimer's disease

Altered callosal function in cerebral microangiopathy.

Callosal dysfunction is known to be evident in a variety of neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. Cerebral microangiopathy (CMA) may also affect callosal pathways by chronic demyelination. The aim of the present study was to investigate callosal function with respect to the extent of CMA. Callosal function was tested by a bimanual tapping task and by analysis of the ipsilateral silent period (iSP) and the transcallosal conduction time (TCT) using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Results were correlated to the extent of CMA measured by cranial magnetic res

Regional callosal morphology in autism and macrocephaly.

Previous investigations have reported decreased size of the corpus callosum (CC) in autism. However, little is known of the regional distribution of these callosal abnormalities. Additional uncertainty exists regarding the role of head size with respect to variations in callosal size in individuals with autism. This study investigated the size of the CC in 5 groups of high functioning individuals: (1) normocephalic autistic individuals; (2) autism with macrocephaly; (3) non-autistic normocephalic controls; (4) non-autistic participants with benign macrocephaly; and (5) a reading disordered (RD

Congenital CMV with callosal lipoma and agenesis.

An infant with symptomatic congenital Cytomegalovirus infection is reported. After the detection of abnormalities on cranial ultrasound scanning, magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a complete absence of corpus callosum with a midline anterior tubulonodular lipoma. A proposed causative link between early in utero Cytomegalovirus infection and lipoma with agenesis of corpus callosum is discussed.
