Myopericarditis following Campylobacter infection.

BACKGROUND: Myopericarditis can be caused by a wide range of infectious agents. There are a few reported cases implicating Campylobacter in the pathogenesis of myopericarditis. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that this case report represents the first documented case in Ireland of myopericarditis associated with Campylobacter enteritis.

Therapeutic and protective approaches to combat Campylobacter jejuni infections.

Campylobacter jejuni is a typical zoonotic bacterium, colonizing the gut of many bird species as commensal. In humans, C. jejuni is a major foodborne pathogen. Infection of humans causes campylobacteriosis in the small intestine, constituting a main source of bacteria-dependent gastroenteritis cases worldwide. In particular, the ingestion of under-cooked rooster meat, raw milk and contaminated water, as well as cross-contamination of ready-to-eat food after handling raw chicken meat, are responsible for the majority of C. jejuni infections. As a consequence, infected individuals may acquire wa

Infections due to encapsulated bacteria, Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter.

Bacterial infections occur often in HIV-infected patients. Defects in both cell-mediated and humoral immunity are associated with an increased frequency of infections due to encapsulated and enteric bacteria. Pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and other pathogens may occur early in the course of AIDS and have typical clinical presentations. Bacteremia is extremely common, and patients frequently fail to develop protective elevations in specific antibodies following infection. Recurrences are noted in up to one third of patients, and suppressive antimicrobial

Campylobacter jejuni infection in broiler chickens.

Day-old, straight-run broiler chickens were procured from a hatchery located in the Pacific Northwest. The chickens were subdivided individually into nine groups of 20 chickens. The chickens were tagged, housed in isolation chambers on wire, fed commercial broiler feed, and given water ad libitum. Three isolates of Campylobacter jejuni of poultry origin and one of human origin were tested in this study. Various C. jejuni cultures were inoculated into 9-day-old chickens by crop gavage. Four groups of 20 chickens were inoculated at a dose level of 0.5 ml of 1 x 10(2) colony-forming units (CFU)/m

Pyloric Campylobacter infection and gastroduodenal disease.

In 1982, a new spiral Gram-negative bacterium which was similar to those of the genus Campylobacter was isolated from the gastric mucosa of 11 patients with gastritis. From then on, the organism was isolated in a further 114 of 267 patients who underwent antral biopsy in Fremantle Hospital between January 1983 and September 1984. During 1984, the bacterium was cultured from 88% of patients in whom it was detected histologically, and was not cultured from any patient with histologically normal gastric mucosa. The new bacterium, pyloric campylobacter, grew in three days on brain-heart infusion b

Campylobacter enteritis associated with canine infection.

Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni has recently been recognised as a human enteric pathogen. Five cases of campylobacter enteritis are described. All five patients had abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Two of the five patients had bloody diarrhoea and relapses. All the patients had been in contact with young dogs which had had diarrhoea. Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni was isolated from these dogs or from their litter-mates. Canine infection with Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni may be an important source of infection causing diarrhoea in man.

Sequential breast implant infections due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the leading causes of bacterial intestinal infections worldwide, while Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus (C. fetus) has been reported to cause extraintestinal infections, including medical device implant infections. However, breast implant infections have rarely been reported. We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman with breast implant infection and vertebral osteomyelitis due to C. fetus. The patient recovered by surgical removal of the infected left implant and was treated with antibiotics for 6 weeks. However, two weeks after the completion

[Isolation of Campylobacter fetus from persons with obstetric-gynecological infections].

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus is a cause of different obstetric-gynecological diseases. It is a first time when rate of infection with Campylobacter was studied and connection between the infection and development of chronic gynecologic diseases and pathology of labor was established. Bacteria were isolated and identified in 36.0% +/- 0.7 of studied women admitted to inpatient clinics. It was established that Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus can cause abnormalities in placenta functions as well as different inflammatory processes during pregnancy.

Campylobacter infections in fattening pigs; excretion pattern and genetic diversity.

The excretion of campylobacter by eight individually housed fattening pigs was monitored during 15 weeks. Rectal faeces samples were collected six times from these pigs and twice from their mothers (seven sows). Campylobacter was cultured from these samples on Preston medium. In some pigs, samples positive for campylobacter alternated with negative samples. Campylobacter was detected in at least four of the six samples collected per fattening pig. The average campylobacter count per sampling showed a decreasing trend (P < 0.001). Of the seven sows, six were shown to excrete campylobacter. Camp

A one-year study of enteric Campylobacter infections in Singapore.

A total of 7344 inpatients with diarrhoea were investigated for Campylobacter infections in Singapore over one year. Campylobacter species were recovered from 1.2% of diarrhoeal stools; 70.3% of the 91 campylobacters were from children under 5 years of age. Further identification of these isolates showed that 89% were Campylobacter jejuni and 10.9% were C. coli, and a high level of resistance to erythromycin was observed among them. Concomitant isolation of Salmonella species or Shigella species was achieved in eight of the Campylobacter-infected patients. Campylobacter enteritis occurred thro

Human Immunity Against Campylobacter Infection.

Campylobacter is a worldwide foodborne pathogen, associated with human gastroenteritis. The efficient translocation of Campylobacter and its ability to secrete toxins into host cells are the 2 key features of Campylobacter pathophysiology which trigger inflammation in intestinal cells and contribute to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly diarrhoea, in humans. The purpose of conducting this literature review is to summarise the current understanding of: i) the human immune responses involved in the elimination of Campylobacter infection and ii) the resistance potential in

Empyema associated with Campylobacter curvus infection.

We report the first case of thoracic empyema associated with Campylobacter curvus infection. A 65-year-old woman with a history of bronchiectasis presented with acute cough and phlegm. The patient reported dyspnoea and left chest pain accompanied by left pleural effusion, despite treatment with sitafloxacin. Curved Gram-negative rods, eventually identified as C. curvus using 16S ribosomal RNA- and atpA-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing, were cultured in anaerobic condition of pleural effusion together with Peptostreptococci. The patient recovered after thoracic drainage a

Bloodstream infection caused by Campylobacter lari.

We describe a case of bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by Campylobacter lari in a 58-year-old man diagnosed with lumbar pyogenic spondylitis. Anaerobic blood cultures, taken on the day of admission and on hospital day 4, were positive after 30 h of incubation, although no bacteria were detected by Gram staining. After subculture on 5 % sheep blood agar for 2 days at 35 °C in a 5 % CO2 environment, capnophilic, curved, gram-negative bacteria were recovered. The bacteria were identified as C. lari using a combination of phenotypic identification methods and partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Th

Guillain-Barre syndrome and Campylobacter infection.

Campylobacter infection of the gastrointestinal tract has been observed as an antecedent illness in some patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS); these patients have been reported to have poor prognosis. We investigated 29 patients with GBS, admitted to our hospital from January 1996 to December 1999 for recent Campylobacter enteritis by culture of their stool specimens. Campylobacter upsaliensis and C. jejuni were isolated from stools of one patient each with acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) respectively. The patient w

[Epidemiology and therapy of Campylobacter pylori infection].

The prevalence of Campylobacter pylori in gastric mucosa was investigated prospectively (by histology, cytology, bacterial culture and urease rapid-test) in 302 patients of a routine gastroenterological endoscopy programme. According to the histopathological findings the following prevalence of C. pylori was established: 3 of 35 normals (9%); 116 of 167 with antral gastritis (69%), 28 of 40 with gastric ulcers (70%); 26 of 33 with duodenal ulcers (79%); 5 of 27 with other conditions (19%). The activity degree of the gastritis correlated closely with the presence of C. pylori. In a prospective

The immune system response to Campylobacter infection.

Campylobacter may be one of the most common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis (GE) in children. It has recently been suggested that it is one of the bacterial pathogens most likely to infect immune-compromised children, and it may facilitate colonization of enteric pathogens. The immune system response was studied in 12 children with Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni (CBJ) infections. Serum concentrations of IgA, IgM, and IgG were analyzed using a Beckman auto-analyzer. Sera specific Ab to CBJ were tested with CBJ specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
