Bacterial Pericarditis Caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus After Mutton Consumption.

Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus causes systemic diseases including bacteremia and meningitis. However, it rarely causes bacterial pericarditis. We present a rare case of bacterial pericarditis caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus. A man in his 60s presented with a fever and dyspnea. Electrocardiography revealed ST segment elevation in all leads except augmented vector right (aVR), and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest revealed a large pericardial effusion. Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus, appearing as curved, gull-wing-shaped gram-negative rods on microscopy, was ident

Campylobacter fetus aortitis in a patient with HIV.

A 36-year-old man with well controlled HIV developed Campylobacter fetus aortitis. To prevent aortic rupture, emergent surgical resection and neo-aortoiliac replacement with his left femoral vein was conducted. After surgical intervention, he was successfully treated with intravenous ertapenem for 6 weeks followed by oral amoxicillin for 3 months.

Cervical osteomyelitis potentially caused by Campylobacter fetus.

Campylobacter fetus is a rare pathogen in humans. It mainly causes invasive infections in immunosuppressed patients. Herein, we report the first case of cervical vertebral osteomyelitis in a previously healthy man with a history of daily alcohol consumption. Treatment was given for six weeks with excellent clinical recovery and normalization of laboratory markers.

Fatal relapse of a purulent pleurisy caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus.

Campylobacter fetus is associated with invasive disease, while other Campylobacter species, such as C. coli and C. jejuni, are a common cause of bacterial diarrhea. Bacteremia has been well described, but pleurisy remains very uncommon. We report the recurrent isolation of a C. fetus subsp. fetus strain during two episodes of pleural effusion with a fatal outcome.

Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus cholecystitis in a patient with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.

Acute cholecystitis due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus is very uncommon. We report a case of cholecystitis and obstructive jaundice in which cultured bile grew this organism. The patient had a 4-year history of hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in common bile duct obstruction due to abdominal lymph node metastasis. Microscopic examination of her bile showed multiple Gram-negative curved organisms and C. fetus subsp. fetus was isolated under microaerophilic conditions. Therefore, we should be aware of this organism and use microaerophilic culture in association with the result of microsc

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus bacteremia associated with chorioamnionitis and intact fetal membranes.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus was isolated from the blood of a patient with chorioamnionitis and intact fetal membranes. The mother improved after appropriate antibiotic treatment, but the infant died of neonatal infection a few minutes after delivery. This is a very unusual etiology of intra-amniotic infection.

Fatal prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Campylobacter fetus.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus has a predilection for vascular endothelium. This report describes a case of a prosthetic valve infective endocarditis due to this microorganism. Despite adequate antibiotic combination treatment, valvular vegetations and perivalvular suppurative complications evolved, leading to valvular dysfunction, heart failure and death. Only three other cases of C. fetus prosthetic valve endocarditis have been described previously. Campylobacter fetus bacteraemia must be considered cautiously, because of the risk of late cardiac or vascular complications.

Acute colitis caused by Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni.

Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni has been recently recognized as a common human enteric pathogen; however, the pathology and pathophysiology of the enteritis caused by this agent are still largely obscure. We report 4 patients who presented with acute abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea and who had C. fetus ss. jejuni isolated from fecal cultures. Each patient showed a fourfold rise in serum IgG titer to the organism isolated. In all 4 patients colonic involvement was noted on sigmoidoscopic examination. Biopsy specimens showed acute colitis with inflammatory infiltrates of the lamina propria and

Campylobacter fetus septic arthritis: report of a case.

We report a case of septic arthritis caused by the fastidious gram-negative rod Campylobacter fetus. We suggest that the organism may be part of the endogenous flora and that the clinical infections tend to occur in compromised hosts. Our patient is the first to be described with multiple myeloma and C. fetus septic arthritis. The documented cases of culture-proven C. fetus septic arthritis reported to date have occurred in three men and one woman, all in the seventh and eighth decades of life, with a mono-articular large joint distribution. The septic arthritis always occurred in previously i

Mycotic popliteal aneurysm rupture secondary to Campylobacter fetus.

BACKGROUND: Mycotic aneurysms of the popliteal artery are uncommon. Popliteal aneurysms rarely rupture. The authors present the second reported case of popliteal artery rupture as a result of Campylobacter fetus infection. This report confirms the arterial destructive potential of C. fetus infection in a peripheral artery. METHODS: An 85-year-old male who had previously undergone endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in 2007 presented with positive blood cultures for C. fetus. No endocarditis was detected. No periprosthetic fluid to suggest aortic endograft infection was present. Duri

[Vascular manifestations due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus infection: report of two cases].

INTRODUCTION: Campylobacter fetus is a rare Gram-negative bacteria affecting especially elderly and immunocompromised patients, and that is responsible of vascular and cutaneous involvement. OBSERVATIONS: We report two cases of C. fetus infection in two diabetic male patients, aged 75 and 85 years. The first patient was admitted for chronic fever. First-line examinations were inconclusive. Combined positron emission tomography and computed imaging tomography (PET-CT) diagnosed an infection of a previously operated popliteal aneurysm. The patient underwent surgery, and per-operative samples we

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus isolated from blood and synovial fluid.

Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus is a rare human pathogen, but can cause serious extraintestinal infections. Effective antimicrobial agent is required for the therapy, but we have very limited knowledge on the susceptibility of the organism. In this study, the susceptibility of 25 isolates of the organism to 14 antimicrobial agents was tested by an agar dilution method. Antimicrobial agents with low MIC ranges, in micrograms/ml, were: meropenem < or = 0.25, dirithromycin < or = 0.5, gentamicin < or = 1, amikacin, ofloxacin, tetracycline and erythromycin < or = 2. The MIC range of cefepime was

Pericarditis Due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus: A Case Report of an Uncommon Infection.

Pericarditis is a common condition with numerous aetiologies. Bacteria other than the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex are an exceptional cause. We present a case of subacute pericarditis highly probable due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus in an immunosuppressed patient undergoing biologic therapy in relation to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). On admission, the patient presented with chest pain, dyspnea, and diaphoresis and has lately developed fever and a large pericardial effusion (PE) with a concomitant increase in the inflammatory parameters. The clinical presentation, along with

Structural and Biochemical Characterization of Aminoglycoside Nucleotidyltransferase(6)-Ib From Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus.

Aminoglycoside antibiotics have played a critical role in the treatment of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial infections. However, antibiotic resistance has severely compromised the efficacy of aminoglycosides. A leading cause of aminoglycoside resistance is mediated by bacterial enzymes that inactivate these drugs via chemical modification. Aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferase-6 (ANT(6)) enzymes inactivate streptomycin by transferring an adenyl group from ATP to position 6 on the antibiotic. Despite the clinical significance of this activity, ANT(6) enzymes remain relatively unch

Pericarditis caused by Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus associated with ingestion of raw beef liver.

Campylobacter fetus is an organism residing primarily in the gastrointestinal tracts of cattle and sheep and transmitting to humans through ingestion of contaminated food products or surface water. The organism has caused various extraintestinal infections but, to date, purulent pericarditis due to the organism has rarely been described. We report a case of purulent pericarditis due to C. fetus subsp. fetus, occurring in a patient having several predisposing conditions, including receiving hemodialysis therapy, recent surgery for cecal cancer, and administration of esomeprazole. The patient me

Genomic epidemiology of Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis from Germany.

Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv) causes bovine genital campylobacteriosis (BGC), a World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH)-listed trade-relevant disease characterized by severe reproductive losses, such as infertility, early embryonic death and abortion in cattle. BGC has significant economic implications that have prompted several countries to adopt stringent eradication and surveillance measures to contain the disease. In Germany, there has been a low incidence of BGC cases over the past 28 years. This study aimed to illustrate the genomic diversity of German Cfv strains isola

Isolation of Campylobacter fetus subsp jejuni from zoo animals.

Over a 1-year period, 619 fecal specimens from animals at the Denver Zoo were cultured for Campylobacter fetus subsp jejuni. The organism was isolated from 35 animals, including 12 primates, 2 felids, a red panda, 13 hooved animals, 6 birds, and 1 reptile. Of 44 cultured fecal specimens from diarrheal animals, 31.8% were positive for Campylobacter, whereas only 5.6% of 575 specimens from animals without diarrhea were positive (P less than 0.001). Among 25 isolates tested, 12 serotypes were represented; several of these serotypes are commonly associated with Campylobacter enteritis in human bei
