Clinical relevance of infections with zoonotic and human oral species of Campylobacter.

Genus Campylobacter has been recognized as a causative bacterial agent of animal and human diseases. Human Campylobacter infections have caused more concern. Campylobacters can be classified into two groups in terms of their original host: zoonotic and human oral species. The major zoonotic species are Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, which mostly reside in the intestines of avian species and are transmitted to humans via consumption of contaminated poultry products, thus causing human gastroenteritis and other diseases as sequelae. The other campylobacters, human oral species, inc

Microbiota of health, gingivitis, and initial periodontitis.

This study compared the subgingival microbiota in periodontal health, gingivitis and initial periodontitis using predominant culture and a DNA probe, checkerboard hybridization method. 56 healthy adult subjects with minimal periodontal attachment loss were clinically monitored at 3-month intervals for 12 months. More sites demonstrated small increments of attachment loss than attachment gain over the monitoring period. Sites, from 17 subjects, showing > or = 1.5 mm periodontal attachment loss during monitoring were sampled as active lesions for microbial analysis. Twelve subjects demonstrated

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the consensus detection of human pathogenic Campylobacter species.

Most rapid identification methods for Campylobacter are designed to detect thermotolerant Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli). A growing number of thermosensitive Campylobacter species are now gaining recognition as emerging human pathogens. Methods are lacking for the rapid screening of these emerging species. Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification method that allows for the rapid and cost-effective detection of bacteria. Degenerate primers against the 16S rRNA sequences for C. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, C. upsaliensis, C. ur

Unusual case of Lemierre's syndrome.

A young previously healthy patient presented with sepsis and cavitating pneumonia. Campylobacter rectus was isolated from blood cultures and subsequent CT neck showed an internal jugular vein thrombosis. Treatment was with antibiotics, anticoagulation and supportive management. Lemierre's syndrome is an infectious thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. Although a rare diagnosis since the use of penicillin for treatment of acute pharyngitis, it is being reported with increasing frequency. Usually associated with Fusobacterium spp, we believe that this is the first reported case of Lemie

Periodontal disease bacteria specific to tonsil in IgA nephropathy patients predicts the remission by the treatment.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin (Ig)A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis in the world. Some bacteria were reported to be the candidate of the antigen or the pathogenesis of IgAN, but systematic analysis of bacterial flora in tonsil with IgAN has not been reported. Moreover, these bacteria specific to IgAN might be candidate for the indicator which can predict the remission of IgAN treated by the combination of tonsillectomy and steroid pulse. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We made a comprehensive analysis of tonsil flora in 68 IgAN patients and 28 control patients usin

Association between infection with Campylobacter species, poor oral health and environmental risk factors on esophageal cancer: a hospital-based case-control study in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown the association between Campylobacter species infection and that environmental factors, poor oral hygiene in particular, are linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer (EC). However, no study has reported on these factors in Thailand. Thus, this study's objective was to evaluate the impact of the relationship between Campylobacter infection and environmental factors on EC incidence in the population of Thailand. METHODS: Data from a case-control study were collected from 105 newly diagnosed EC cases and 105 controls recruited from 2007 to 2017. In

The bacterial serine protease inhibitor ecotin inhibits neutrophil elastase enzymatic activity in cystic fibrosis sputa.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) airway disease is characterized by impaired mucociliary clearance, chronic, polymicrobial infections and robust, neutrophil-dominated inflammation. Pulmonary disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with CF and is due to progressive airflow obstruction and ultimately respiratory failure. One of the earliest abnormalities in CF airway disease is the recruitment of neutrophils to the lungs. Neutrophil activation leads to the release of their intracellular content, including neutrophil elastase (NE), that damages lung tissues in CF. Our goal is to cha

Evaluation of periodontal pathogens in amniotic fluid and the role of periodontal disease in pre-term birth and low birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Pre-term birth and/or low birth weight (PTLBW) is a serious problem in developing countries. The absence of known risk factors in ≈ 50% of PTLBW cases has resulted in a continued search for other causes. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of periodontitis on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Samples were taken from 50 pregnant women who underwent amniocentesis. Polymerase chain reaction was performed on amniotic fluid samples obtained during amniocentesis and on subgingival plaque samples to determine the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemc

Oral bone loss is increased in ovariectomized rats.

Alveolar bone loss associated with periodontal disease occurs frequently in postmenopausal females, the same group that is predisposed to osteoporosis. To determine if the estrogen-deficient state enhances oral bone loss, we studied ovariectomized rats administered the potent bone-resorbing cytokine interleukin-1 or the periodontal pathogen Campylobacter rectus lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Distal root canals of first mandibular molars were instrumented with endodontic files, and bone resorbing factors were deposited and sealed into the root canal. Radiographs of periapical bone loss were evaluate

Quantification of subgingival bacterial pathogens at different stages of periodontal diseases.

Anaerobic gram-negative oral bacteria such as Treponema denticola, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, and Fusobacterium nucleatum are closely associated with periodontal diseases. We measured the relative population (bacterial levels) of these oral pathogens in subgingival tissues of patients at different stages of Korean chronic periodontal diseases. We divided the individuals into those with chronic gingivitis (G), moderate periodontitis (P1), severe periodontitis (P2), and normal individuals (N) (n = 20 for each group
