A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the consensus detection of human pathogenic Campylobacter species.

Most rapid identification methods for Campylobacter are designed to detect thermotolerant Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli). A growing number of thermosensitive Campylobacter species are now gaining recognition as emerging human pathogens. Methods are lacking for the rapid screening of these emerging species. Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification method that allows for the rapid and cost-effective detection of bacteria. Degenerate primers against the 16S rRNA sequences for C. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, C. upsaliensis, C. ur

Salmonellae and campylobacters in household and stray dogs in northern Taiwan.

Rectal swabs were collected from 437 household and 491 stray dogs in northern Taiwan from May 2003 to June 2005 to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibilities of salmonellae and campylobacters. The results revealed that 2.1% of household dogs and 6.3% of stray dogs were positive for salmonellae, with Salmonella Duesseldorf being the most dominant serotype in both. Additionally, 2.7% of the household dogs and 23.8% of the stray dogs were positive for campylobacters. Campylobacter jejuni was the most prevalent species (86.8%), followed by C. upsaliensis (9.3%) and C. coli (3.9%

Investigation of the Role of Campylobacter Infection in Suspected Acute Polyradiculoneuritis in Dogs.

BACKGROUND: Acute polyradiculoneuritis (APN) is an immune-mediated peripheral nerve disorder in dogs that shares many similarities with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in humans, in which the bacterial pathogen Campylobacter spp. now is considered to be a major triggering agent. Little information is available concerning the relationship between APN and Campylobacter spp. in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To estimate the association between Campylobacter spp. infection and APN. Associations with additional potential risk factors also were investigated, particularly consumption of raw chicken. AN

Increased risk for Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli infection of pet origin in dog owners and evidence for genetic association between strains causing infection in humans and their pets.

We compared Campylobacter jejuni/coli multilocus sequence types (STs) from pets (dogs/cats) and their owners and investigated risk factors for pet-associated human campylobacteriosis using a combined source-attribution and case-control analysis. In total, 132/687 pet stools were Campylobacter-positive, resulting in 499 strains isolated (320 C. upsaliensis/helveticus, 100 C. jejuni, 33 C. hyointestinalis/fetus, 10 C. lari, 4 C. coli, 32 unidentified). There were 737 human and 104 pet C. jejuni/coli strains assigned to 154 and 49 STs, respectively. Dog, particularly puppy, owners were at increas

Prevalence of selected bacterial and parasitic agents in feces from diarrheic and healthy control cats from Northern California.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial and parasitic agents are commonly implicated as causes of diarrhea in cats, but there is a paucity of information evaluating epidemiological and prevalence factors associated with most of these organisms in cats. OBJECTIVES: Determine the prevalence of selected enteropathogens in diarrheic and nondiarrheic cats. ANIMALS: A total of 219 diarrheic and 54 nondiarrheic cats. METHODS: Prospective study. Fresh fecal specimens were submitted for centrifugation flotation, culture, ELISA (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin [CPE], and C. difficile toxi

[Clinical decision making in family practice. A patient with abdominal pain and chills].

An 82-year-old man was admitted because of abdominal pain and a shaking chill. His medical history revealed ileocecal resection because of ileitis associated with a Yersinia infection 3 years before admission. One year later he was readmitted because of bowel obstruction due to recurrent ileitis. He was treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for two weeks because of positive serological tests for Yersinia and made a full recovery except for chronic diarrhoea. On the current admission, stool cultures yielded Campylobacter upsaliensis. Further analysis showed severe non-specific ulcerative i

Cross-reactivity of outer membrane proteins of Campylobacter species with cholera toxin.

Campylobacter jejuni is a foodborne pathogen and a leading cause of diarrhoea worldwide. It is believed that a cholera toxin-like toxin (CTLT) produced by C. jejuni may mediate watery diarrhoea. However, the production of a CTLT by C. jejuni is controversial. A cholera toxin gene (ctx) homologue has not been identified in Campylobacter species. We investigated the identity of the CT cross-reactive antigen from Campylobacter species previously and the results are reviewed here. Filtrates of C. jejuni grown in four different liquid media, reported to promote CTLT production, were tested by Chine

From Barns to Bushes: Exploring the ECOFF-Based Non-Wild-Type Status of Campylobacter spp. in Pets, Livestock, Synanthropic Birds and Wild Animals in Northwestern Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to both humans and animals. Zoonotic bacteria, such as Campylobacter, contribute to human infections and the spread of AMR, particularly through livestock, pets and wildlife. We investigated the prevalence, distribution and EUCAST ECOFF-based wild-type (WT) vs. non-wild-type (NWT) phenotypes in Campylobacter spp. isolated from different animal species in northwestern Italy, between 2014 and 2023. METHODS: Stool samples from owned dogs, livestock, wildlife and synanthropic birds were collected for Campylobacter isolation.

Exploring the role of healthy dogs as hosts of enterohepatic Helicobacter species using cultivation-dependent and -independent approaches.

Enterohepatic Helicobacter (EHH) species have been increasingly associated with acute gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatobiliary diseases in humans. However, their host range and transmission routes are poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the presence of EHH in healthy dogs using both cultivation-dependent and -independent methods. Three hundred and ninety faecal samples from domestic dogs without gastrointestinal symptoms were analysed between June 2018 and July 2019 in Valdivia (South of Chile). Samples were inoculated on selective medium a

Molecular-based identification and typing of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli.

Thermophilic Campylobacter spp., mainly Campylobacter jejuni and to a lesser extent C. coli are recognized as the most common bacteriological causes of gastroenteritis in humans. As enteric infection with Campylobacter organisms cannot be distinguished from that caused by other enteric pathogens, a definitive diagnosis can only be made by isolating or detecting the organism from the feces. The epidemiology of Campylobacter enteritis has been complicated by the ubiquitous nature of the organism (commonly found as a commensal in the intestines of domestic animals, in milk, and in water). Further

Motor nerve terminal degeneration provides a potential mechanism for rapid recovery in acute motor axonal neuropathy after Campylobacter infection.

We investigated the possible mechanisms of paralysis and recovery in a patient with the acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) pattern of the Guillain-Barré syndrome. The AMAN pattern of GBS is characterized clinically by acute paralysis without sensory involvement and electrodiagnostically by low compound motor action potential amplitudes, suggesting axonal damage, without evidence of demyelination. Many AMAN patients have serologic or culture evidence of recent Campylobacter jejuni infection. Pathologically, the most severe cases are characterized by wallerian-like degeneration of motor axons

Evaluation of a multiplex panel for the diagnosis of acute infectious diarrhea in immunocompromised hematologic patients.

IntroductionDiarrhea is a frequent complication in hematologic patients, being an infectious cause frequently suspected. Rapid and accurate detection of gastrointestinal pathogens is vital in immunocompromised hosts. The aim of this study was to compare routine diagnostic methods versus a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the diagnosis of infectious diarrhea in immunocompromised hematologic patients.Material and methodsWe conducted a prospective observational study from March 2015 to January 2016 to compare conventional methods for the diagnosis of infectious diarrhea with FI
