Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk and Mental Health Conditions Among Older Canadian Adults in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

IMPORTANCE: Despite plausible mechanisms linking obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and mental health conditions, prospective studies from representative samples are needed to estimate temporal associations between OSA and mental health conditions during aging. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether high risk of OSA is associated with increased odds of concurrent and future mental health conditions among middle-aged and older adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study is a secondary analysis of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) and used data from respondents of the CLSA Ba

Adverse childhood experiences and sarcopenia: a prospective study embedded in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), known to increase lifelong health risks, have recently been linked to frailty. This study examined whether ACEs predict the onset and progression of sarcopenia, a core component of the frailty phenotype. METHODS: We analysed 23 476 participants aged 45-85 years in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging with 3-year follow-up (49.5% female; mean age 62.1 ± 9.9). Eight ACEs were assessed using validated retrospective instruments. Associations between ACE count and incident sarcopenia (revised European Working groups on Sarcopenia in Older Peopl

Post-traumatic stress disorder in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging: A genome-wide association study.

OBJECTIVE: Canada exhibits one of highest lifetime prevalence for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the etiology of this debilitating mental health condition still remains largely unknown. This study aims to examine the genetics of PTSD in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to identify potential genetic factors involved in the development of PTSD. METHOD: The CLSA sample was screened for primary (PTSD status) and secondary outcomes (avoidance, detachment, guardedness, and nightmares) based on the Primary Care PTSD Screen Scale (PC-PTSD). After GWAS quality control and wh

Effects of Season and Daylight Saving Time Shifts on Sleep Symptoms: Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There has been conflicting evidence regarding the association between seasonal changes and daylight saving time (DST) and sleep disorders. This topic is of particular interest currently because the United States and Canada are considering the elimination of seasonal clock changes. The aim of this study was to compare sleep symptoms among participants who were interviewed in different seasons and before/after the transition into DST and standard time (ST). METHODS: A total of 30,097 people aged 45-85 years taking part in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were

Individuals With Multijoint Osteoarthritis Demonstrate Larger Longitudinal Declines in Frailty: Data From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that multijoint osteoarthritis would modify the relation between time and frailty progression, in which more affected joints would lead to larger declines over six years compared to those without osteoarthritis using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. METHODS: Frailty was quantified using a frailty index at baseline, three-year, and six-year follow-up. Osteoarthritis was self-reported physician diagnosis of knee, hip, or hand. Participants were categorized as having none, one, two, or three affected joints at baselin

Retinal Vessel Traits and the Development of Balance Impairment: The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

PURPOSE: The association between retinal microvascular traits and balance has not been studied. Our goal was to assess whether retinal vessel width, area, and tortuosity are associated with the development of balance impairment. METHODS: Baseline and 3-year follow-up data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging Comprehensive Cohort were analyzed. Adults aged 45 to 85 years who successfully passed a one-legged balance test at baseline were included (n = 12,929). Retinal arteriolar and venular width, area, and tortuosity were quantified using the Quantitative Analysis of Retinal Vessel To

Self-reported factors associated with community ambulation after stroke: The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Community ambulation is frequently limited for people with stroke. It is, however, considered important to people with stroke. The objectives were to identify factors associated with self-reported community ambulation in Canadians aged 45+ with stroke and to identify factors associated with community ambulation specific to Canadian males and to Canadian females with stroke. Data were utilized from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging Tracking Cohort. Multivariate logistic regression models were developed for community ambulation. Mean age was 68 (SE 0.5) years (45% female). In the final co

Sleep Disorders and Future Diagnosis of Parkinsonism: A Prospective Study Using the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Earlier detection of parkinsonism, specifically during its prodromal stage, may be key to preventing its progression. Previous studies have produced contradictory results on the association between sleep symptoms and prodromal parkinsonism. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a prospective study within the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to determine whether self-reported symptoms of insomnia, somnolence, apnea, and restless legs syndrome predate the diagnosis of parkinsonism after three years of follow-up. METHODS: At baseline, amongst other information, participants completed a

Prospective prediction of anxiety onset in the Canadian longitudinal study on aging (CLSA): A machine learning study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health disorders in the middle aged and older population. Because older individuals are more likely to have multiple comorbidities or increased frailty, the impact of anxiety disorders on their overall well-being is exacerbated. Early identification of anxiety disorders using machine learning (ML) can potentially mitigate the adverse consequences associated with these disorders. METHODS: We applied ML to the data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to predict the onset of anxiety disorders approximately three year

Geographic variation in bone mineral density and prevalent fractures in the Canadian longitudinal study on aging.

UNLABELLED: Awareness of the prevalence of osteoporosis and fractures across jurisdictions can guide the development of local preventive programs and healthcare policies. We observed geographical variations in total hip bone mineral density and in the prevalence of major osteoporotic fractures across Canadian provinces, which persisted after adjusting for important covariates. PURPOSE: We aimed to describe sex-specific total hip bone mineral density (aBMD) and prevalent major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) variation between Canadian provinces. METHODS: We used baseline data from 21,227 Canadia

Pure tone auditory thresholds and their association with cognition in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is associated with cognitive decline and was identified as the strongest modifiable individual risk factor for dementia. However, inconsistencies in the reported strength of this association have been observed. The present study aimed to assess whether differences in the range of sound frequencies used to determine pure tone average (PTA) thresholds could explain the inconsistencies. Data from 13,654 older adults in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were used to compute four different PTA thresholds: Low frequency, Speech (corresponding to frequencies use

Genetic Variations in Bitter Taste Receptors and COVID-19 in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Background/Objectives: Bitter Taste Receptors (encoded by TAS2R genes) are expressed in mucosal and bronchial epithelia, as well as in immune cells, contributing to defense against airborne pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2. Data on single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TAS2R genes or pseudogenes in COVID-19 are limited. This study examined the association between TAS2R SNPs and COVID-19 infection and seroconversion in European individuals participating in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. Methods: Data from the Genome-wide Genetic Data, Comprehensive Baseline (version 7.0), Follow-up 2
