From a review of the records of 2,302 patients with retinoblastoma collated from CPMC and AFIP, it was found that retinoblastoma patients who survived their original eye cancer have a high incidence of second nonocular malignancies. The second neoplasms occur almost exclusively (97.5%) in patients who have had bilateral retinoblastoma, although retinoblastoma is much more commonly unilateral. The second neoplasms have appeared between 1 and 42 years after the successful treatment of retinoblastoma and have been fatal in approximately 85% of cases. Seventy-one percent of patients develop tumors

BACKGROUND: Loneliness in cancer survivors is associated with a variety of negative consequences to physical and mental health. Research regarding the impact of loneliness on health-related quality of life and mental health outcomes in prostate cancer (PC) survivors is scarce. The current study aimed to investigate prevalence and determinants of loneliness in long-term PC survivors following radical prostatectomy (RP).
METHODS: A total of 3127 PC survivors (mean age 79.5 years, SD 6.4) from the multicenter German Familial PC Database returned the study questionnaires during the COVID-19 pande

Malignant disease and its treatment carry huge burdens for patients. Some are immediate, in that the disease itself presents as a life threatening event, or the treatment may result in immediate and devastating toxicity. More often the treatment of cancer is associated with more subtle or late events, yet these may impact the quality of life for cancer survivors in a variety of ways. In addition to the physical sequelae of cancer or its treatment, cancer survivors often experience consequences in the form of social or mental incapacity. Session III of this Colloquium on Cardio-Oncology focuses

With increasing survival rates across all cancers, survivors represent a growing population that is frequently affected by persistent or permanent hair growth disorders as a result of systemic therapies, radiotherapy, surgical procedures, and therapeutic transplants. These hair disorders include persistent chemotherapy-induced alopecia, persistent radiotherapy-induced alopecia, endocrine therapy-induced alopecia and hirsutism, postsurgery alopecia and localized hypertrichosis, and persistent stem cell transplantation and targeted therapy-induced alopecia. The information contained in this cont

Certain cancer therapies, including radiation therapy and some types of chemotherapies, are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and events. Some of these effects such as those presented by anthracyclines, radiation therapy, cisplatin, as well as those presented by hormone therapy for breast cancer-usually taken for many years for some breast and prostate cancers-are long-lasting and associated with cardiovascular events risk more than 20 years after cancer treatment. Cardiovascular testing, diagnostic assessment of suspected cardiovascular symptomatology, as well as

BACKGROUND: The number of head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors has been increasing because of improving survival in the United States. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of respiratory disease diagnoses in HNC survivors in comparison with cancer-free individuals. A second aim was to investigate risk factors for respiratory disease among HNC survivors.
METHODS: Patients with HNC diagnosed from 1996 to 2012 were identified in the Utah Cancer Registry (n = 1901). Up to 5 cancer-free individuals from the general population (n = 7796) were matched to each HNC survivor by birth yea

BACKGROUND: Young adult survivors of childhood cancer exhibit rates of frailty similar to adults several decades older without a cancer history. Frailty has been associated with sleep disturbances in non-cancer populations, but the relationship has not been examined in childhood cancer survivors who are known to exhibit elevated rates of sleep problems.
AIMS: Examine associations between frailty and poor sleep quality in long-term survivors of childhood cancer.
METHODS: This study utilized data from 9044 participants (> 5 years from diagnosis, Mage = 40.8 years [SD = 9.5]) in the Childhood C

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are associated with an increased risk of childhood cancer. However, there is a knowledge gap about health outcomes for childhood cancer survivors with congenital anomalies.
METHODS: We included childhood cancer survivors from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (n = 22,247), comparing survivors with and without self-reported anomalies. Using Cox regression, we estimated HR and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of chronic health conditions (CHC) classified per the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events from 1 (mild) to 5 (fatal) and subsequent malignant neo

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at increased risk for keratinocyte carcinomas (KC) however, the long-term incidence of single and multiple KC is not well established.
OBJECTIVE: Identify risk factors and quantify KC cumulative incidence and multiple-incidence burden in CCS.
METHODS: KC were identified among Childhood Cancer Survivor Study participants, a cohort of 5-year cancer survivors diagnosed <21 years of age between 1970 and 1999 in North America. Cumulative incidence was estimated and multivariable models assessed relative rates of KC associated with survivor and trea

PURPOSE: Osteonecrosis (ON) is a potentially serious complication of therapy in survivors of childhood cancer. Our goals were to describe the incidence of ON and identify patient and treatment characteristics associated with elevated risk.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The rate of self-reported ON was determined for 9,261 patients enrolled onto the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, a cohort of 5-year survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed from 1970 to 1986, and compared with the rate in a random sample of 2,872 siblings of survivors. Survivors with positive responses were reinterviewed to confirm the

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors are at increased risk for the development of secondary sarcomas. Exposure to radiation therapy is a known risk factor for the development of these sarcomas. Other risk factors for secondary sarcomas have not been well described for childhood cancer survivors. We analyzed a large cohort of childhood cancer survivors to determine the true incidence of secondary sarcomas and to examine factors associated with the risk of developing secondary sarcomas.
METHODS: The history of secondary sarcomas in 14,372 participants in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study wa

Second primary neoplasms (SPNs) are a recognised late effect of treatment for childhood cancer. Thyroid SPNs can develop after exposure to low-dose radiation, due to the radio-sensitivity of the thyroid gland. The British Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (BCCSS) was set up to directly monitor the late effects of treatment, including risk of SPNs, in childhood cancer survivors and includes 17,980 5-year survivors. We carried out a cohort analysis to determine the risk of thyroid SPNs in the BCCSS, and estimated risk using standardised incidence ratios (SIRs), relative risk (RR) using multivariat

PURPOSE: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors and adult survivors of childhood cancer (CCSs) represent growing populations facing unique survivorship challenges. Among these, financial hardship has emerged as a critical late effect, with profound implications for quality of life and health equity.
METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes literature published between January 2020 and April 2025 on financial hardship in AYA cancer survivors and CCSs. Studies were identified through PubMed, Medline (Ovid), and Scopus and we compared the prevalence, determinants, and consequences o

BACKGROUND: Studies have found associations between cancer therapies and auditory complications, but data are limited on long-term outcomes and risks associated with multiple exposures.
PROCEDURE: The Childhood Cancer Survivor Study is a retrospective cohort investigating health outcomes of long-term survivors (5+ years) diagnosed and treated between 1970 and 1986 compared to a randomly selected sibling cohort. Questionnaires were completed by 14,358 survivors of childhood cancer and 4,023 sibling controls. Analysis determined the first occurrence of four auditory conditions in two time perio

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is increased in childhood cancer survivors (CCS). In France, fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) is recommended every 2 years for those aged 50-74 years, although no specific CRC-screening programs are dedicated to CCS.
METHODS: We investigated the participation rate in CRC screening by using the national health data system to identify FIT in the French Childhood Cancer Survivor Study cohort, across three two-year periods-2016-17, 2018-19, and 2020-21-to compare it to the general population via indirect standardization and used multivariable logistic re

Women who survived childhood cancers or cancers at a young age are at high risk for breast cancer later in life. The accentuated risk is notable among those treated at a young age with a high radiation dose but also extends to survivors treated with therapies other than or in addition to radiation therapy. The predisposing risk factors are complex. Advances in radiation therapy continue to curtail exposure, yet the risk of a second cancer has no dose threshold and a long latency period, and concurrent use of chemotherapy may have an additive effect on long-term risk of cancer. Early screening

Background High fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is an understudied topic in prostate cancer (PCa) survivors. This study aimed to detect the prevalence, consequences and characteristics associated with high FCR in PCa survivors. Material and methods This cross-sectional study included patients diagnosed with localized PCa and treated with curative radical prostatectomy between 1992 and 2012. We administered the Cancer Worry Scale (CWS) to assess FCR severity (primary outcome measure). Secondary outcomes included distress, quality of life (QOL), post-traumatic symptoms, and multidimensional aspe

PURPOSE: Although long-term colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors generally report a good quality of life, fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) remains an important issue. This study investigated whether the Cancer Worry Scale (CWS) can detect high FCR, the prevalence, and characteristics of FCR in CRC survivors.
METHODS: Two hundred and eleven patients who had undergone successful CRC surgery in the period 2003-2010 in the Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands were asked to participate. All patients were sent an information letter plus questionnaires for collecting information on demog

The risk of developing skin cancer is elevated among childhood cancer survivors (CCS), particularly among those treated with radiation. This survey study examined the skin cancer surveillance behaviors of 94 CCS. Approximately 48% of CCS had ever conducted skin self-examination (SSE) and 31% had ever received a physician skin examination. Rates of physician skin examination were 2.5 times higher among CCS treated with radiation compared to those without radiation. However, rates of SSEs did not differ based on treatment history. These findings highlight the need to promote skin cancer surveill

PURPOSE: Several studies reported previously increased risk for obesity in childhood cancer survivors (CCS). The objectives of this article were to evaluate the rate of overweight and obesity in CCS compared to the general population, to identify possible risk factors for obesity in these patients, and to assess changes in weight status over time.
METHODS: A historical cohort including all patients (n=820) treated at a tertiary center over a twenty-year period, who were diagnosed with cancer at age <18 years, and had at least one year of follow-up after completion of anti-cancer treatment.
