Inborn errors of the IL-17-mediated signaling have been associated with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). We describe a patient with CMC, atopic dermatitis, enamel dysplasia, and recurrent parotitis harboring a novel compound heterozygous mutation of TRAF3IP2, leading to autosomal recessive ACT1 deficiency and deficient IL-17 signaling.

A 69-year-old woman sought treatment with a history of persistent debilitating intraoral ulcerations and recurrent oral and vaginal candidiasis. The medical history included thymoma, breast cancer, and lip cancer. The oral lesions were consistent with bullous lichen planus. Laboratory studies showed severe hypogammaglobulinemia. The chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis-thymoma syndrome is now recognized as a distinct form of primary immunodeficiency.

Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis (CMC) is a rare immunodeficiency disease characterized by chronic or recurrent superficial Candida infections on the skin, nail, and mucous membranes. Here, we present four Chinese patients with CMC who manifested oral mucosal leukoplakia and nail thickening during early childhood, all displaying fissured tongue lines. The causative pathogens isolated from their oral mucosa and nails were identified as C. albicans and C. parapsilosis through morphology and molecular sequencing. Notably, among the four patients, one presented with vitiligo, while another had hy

Four cases of familial mucocutaneous candidiasis corresponding to two families were studied. In two of the cases (Family I), there were lesions in the mouth, vaginal mucosa, nails, palms and soles, with no other associated infections. In the other two cases (Family II) there were oral (glossitis with macroglossia), genital and inguinal folds lesions, associated to frequent bacterial infections (recurring forunculosis , pneumonia). The immunological study in the four cases showed overlapping results: anti-candida circulating antibodies at high dilutions, a negative or weakly positive candidine

Even if initial immunologic screen is normal, a high index of suspicion for immunodeficiency should guide the evaluation and management of patients with recurrent episodes of mucocutaneous candidiasis. Although rare, a diagnosis of chronic mucocutaneous disease should always be considered in order to improve their outcome.

Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene, characterized by the clinical triad of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC), hypoparathyroidism, and adrenal insufficiency. CMC can be complicated by systemic candidiasis or oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and may lead to death. The role of chronic Candida infection in the etiopathogenesis of oral SCC is unclear. Long-term use of fluconazole has led to the emergence of Candida albicans strains with decreased susceptibility

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) is a clinically heterogeneous disease. Some immunologic and hormonal abnormalities have been associated with CMC. The factors that predispose host to CMC infection could be autosomal or acquisitive. The disease usually occurs in childhood. Here, we reviewed the published literature on chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and a four years old girl is presented with CMC. She had a history of recurrent thrush and otomycosis since the age of one. Candida albicans was detected in skin scraping and biopsy samples. Serum iron was low. TSH hormone level was high an

UNLABELLED: We describe the clinical and immunological features of two families with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) and primary hypothyroidism. Family A includes three siblings with both candidiasis and hypothyroidism and four individuals with hypothyroidism only. Family B includes four members with candidiasis, of whom one (a male child) also had hypothyroidism. All individuals affected with CMC had suffered from oral candidiasis and onychomycosis since infancy. Facial seborrhoic dermatitis, general folliculitis and scaling blepharitis were main manifestations. Hypothyroidism became

An autopsy case of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMCC) is reported here, in which cerebral vasculitis developed in the final stage. A 32-year-old man who had suffered from superficial candidial infection since his childhood was diagnosed as having CMCC. During the past 7 years the patient had developed various associated disorders including insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), candidial esophagitis, multiple digestive tract ulcers and pyothorax. In 1998, at the age of 32, he developed convulsions that were accompanied by impairment of consci

Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder produced by parathyroid hormone deficiency of unknown cause. It is often associated with other endocrine abnormalities. Patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism frequently develop ectodermal disease, including dry, rough skin: coarse, brittle hair; and lusterless, distally split nails. All of these complaints are relatively common in a dermatologic practice. Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis is also a manifestation of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. A patient is presented with a prominent ectodermal dysplasia and a chronic mucocutaneous candid

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis is a rare skin condition that may be associated with immunologic defects, failure of the endocrine system, or a neoplasm, especially thymoma. Ocular findings are rare. Our patients, a middle-aged man, had chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis in conjunction with an aggressive malignant thymoma. He was initially seen with recurrent Candida keratitis and subsequently had Candida esophagitis and a polymicrobial lung abscess. The skin, nail, mucous membrane, and conjunctival involvement responded to oral ketoconazole therapy. This syndrome consists of at least five gr

Patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis have persistent Candida infection of nails, skin, and mucous membranes, but rarely, if ever, does an invasive fungal infection develop. We describe two patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis who died of fungal infection; one had C albicans meningitis and the second had Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis. The cases of four other patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and invasive fungal infection, three with crytococcosis and one with histoplasmosis, have been reported previously. Immunological profiles on these six patients reve
