Oral candidiasis (OC) is an opportunistic fungal infection of the oral mucosae, sustained by Candida albicans or other non-albican Candida species (NAC), usually eradicated by conventional antifungals of the classes of azoles, polyenes, or derivative from echinocandins. OC usually occurs under predisposing local or systemic factors. C. lusitaniae is an opportunistic strain that is rarely responsible for human infection and occurs mainly in severe immunocompromised states. The present work reported an unconventional case of OC in an otherwise healthy immunocompetent woman sustained by C. lusita

Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic fungal infection commonly encountered in immunocompromised individuals. The oral cavity harbours numerous microbes and along with immunity saliva also maintains oral health. The Candida species form biofilm over the tissue and prosthetic surfaces. The biofilm formation results in persistent colonisation and persistent infection. The saliva in the oral cavity maintains the integrity of the oral environment by washing away the microbes through its flow and with its antimicrobial agents. The significant role of salivary histatins as an antifungal agent diminis

Thousands of microorganisms coexist within the human microbiota. However, certain conditions can predispose the organism to the overgrowth of specific pathogens that further lead to opportunistic infections. One of the most common such imbalances in the normal oral flora is the excessive growth of Candida spp., which produces oral candidiasis. In immunocompromised individuals, this fungal infection can reach the systemic level and become life-threatening. Hence, prompt and efficient treatment must be administered. Traditional antifungal agents, such as polyenes, azoles, and echinocandins, may

Dermatologists commonly prescribe medications such as antibiotics and corticosteroids that can increase the risk for candidiasis. Though conventional antifungals are often effective against candidiasis, they are not without side effects and species of Candida are gaining resistance. Probiotics help treat conditions such as post-antibiotic diarrhea and infectious diarrhea, and thus have the potential to help with Candida infections, as well. For this reason, we provide an overview of therapies prescribed in dermatology that may increase the risk for candidiasis, and we review the literature on

To evaluate risk factors related to sociodemographic and clinical variables, oral contraception and sexual behavior of women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis, we conducted a case-control study comparing 153 patients with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis with both asymptomatic women with negative vaginal cultures and patients with nonrecurrent symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis. In logistic regression analysis, patients with recurrent Candida vaginitis were more likely than negative controls to have used any contraceptive method in the year before evaluation, to have used antibiotics

Background/Objectives: Pediatric periodontal inflammation arises from complex host-microbe interactions. Beyond bacterial biofilms, fungal colonization-particularly by Candida albicans-is increasingly recognized as a contributor. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between fungal and bacterial colonization, host inflammatory mediators, and salivary parameters in children. It also aimed to identify salivary biomarkers that could be useful for the early diagnosis of oral candidiasis and periodontal inflammation. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 140 children

Oral candidiasis (candidosis) is an infection with multiple manifestations. To prevent prolongation of undiagnosed cases, it is essential that the dental clinicians have an understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of this disease. The learning objective of this article is the identification of the various clinical features of candidiasis. The underlying causes of oral candidiasis include antibiotic therapy, poor denture hygiene, xerostomia, immune deficiencies, diabetes, and some less common conditions. Candidal infection may be superimposed on other mucosal diseases and may

The incidence of Candida albicans and other candida species were examined by mycological culture and histologically in 193 patients with various forms of oral leukoplakia and 14 patients with carcinoma of the oral mucosa, the results being compared with a control group of 137 subjects with a normal mucosa. Comparing the leukoplakia groups one with the other and with the control group revealed definite, usually statistically significant, differences in the incidence of fungi: 46.4% of patients, 29.2% among controls. The incidence of oral fungi was 35.4% among those with noxigenic leukoplakia, 5

Several opportunistic infections associated with immunosuppression are noted to occur secondary to an altered relationship between host and organism. In relation to diminished host immunologic defenses, associated commensal organisms may evolve to a pathogen state. Candidiasis, a common oral marker disease reflective of immunosuppression, results from dysfunction of complex cellular interactions keyed by depressed T-cell activity or function. Certain viral infections may also serve as probable markers of immunosuppression. One such infection is typified by the development of oral hairy leukopl

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prevalence of invasive candidiasis in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to evaluate oral diseases and Candida spp. colonization in low birth weight preterm newborns.
METHODS: A descriptive epidemiological study performed in two stages. First, prevalence of candidiasis was analyzed in a database of 295 preterm patients admitted to hospital for over 10 days and birth weight less than 2,000g. In the second stage, oral changes and Candida spp. colonization were assessed in 65 patients weighing less than 2,000g, up to 4 week-old, hospitalized for over 10 days and present

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk factors associated with the emergence of fluconazole resistant Candida spp. in HIV-infected patients with oral candidiasis.
METHODS: Candida spp. were isolated from oral swabs and tested in vitro for resistance to fluconazole. The factors potentially correlated with vazole-resistent Candida spp. infections were investigated.
RESULTS: Fifty-one out of 118 patients (43%) with oral candidiasis had fluconazole resistant Candida spp. The following factors were significantly associated with the development of fluconazole resistance: (1) more than five episodes of or

A 42-year-old man who used intravenous drugs had oral candidiasis and weight loss. Careful examination led to a diagnosis of AIDS. The patient subsequently died of disseminated cryptococcosis, systemic candidiasis, and polymicrobial bacteremia. The circumstances and progression noted in this case led to the recommendation that an aggressive screening for AIDS should be performed on patients at high risk for this syndrome who present with oral Candida infection.

Oral candidiasis is a common fungal infection in patients with an impaired immune system, such as those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and patients with AIDS. It has a high morbidity amongst the latter group with approximately 85% of patients being infected at some point during the course of their illness. A major predisposing factor in HIV-infected patients is a decreased CD4 T-cell count. The majority of infections are due to C. albicans although other species such as C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. krusei and C. parapsilosis are increasingly isolated. The systemic azoles, ketoconazole, f

PURPOSE: Azole antimycotics and nystatin oral solution are used to treat oral candidiasis. Azoles inhibit cytochrome (CYP) P450-dependent metabolism of warfarin, which could increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Nystatin is not expected to interfere with warfarin metabolism, but current data are conflicting. With this study, we aimed to explore the potential drug-drug interactions between warfarin and azole antimycotics used in the treatment of oral candidiasis, that is, systemic fluconazole, miconazole oral gel, and nystatin oral solution.
METHODS: By linking clinical data on intern

AIMS: To determine the role of human lactoferrin (hLF) in protecting the oral cavities of mice against Candida albicans infection in lactoferrin knockout (LFKO(-/-)) mice was compared to wild-type (WT) mice. We also aim to determine the protective role of hLF in LFKO(-/-) mice.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Antibiotic-treated immunosuppressed mice were inoculated with C. albicans (or sham infection) by oral swab and evaluated for the severity of infection after 7 days of infection. To determine the protective role of hLF, we added 0·3% solution of hLF to the drinking water given to some of the mice. C
