Three-day treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Butoconazole nitrate, a newer imidazole, is effective for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis when administered as a vaginal cream. The microbiologic and clinical cure rates achieved with a 3-day course of butoconazole 2% cream have been comparable with those obtained with a 6-day course of miconazole nitrate 2% cream or a 3-day course of clotrimazole vaginal tablets (200 mg/day). Patients taking oral contraceptives have responded as favorably as those using other forms of birth control or none whatsoever. In addition, both microbiologic and clinical cures resulting from a 3-day regimen

Quantitative system for diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Vaginal infections are one of the most common reason for gynecological consultations. Many of them are the result of overgrowth of resident microorganisms. The clinical symptoms of vulvovaginal candidiasis are nonspecific and an accurate diagnosis is a problem that often leads to inadequate treatment or delays in treatment. The lack of an exact and practical diagnostic method is a common cause of misdiagnosis. AIM: To create a complex, quantitative method for the diagnosis of vulvovaginal candidiasis which to enables differentiation from vaginal fungal colonization. MATERIAL AN

An epidemiological survey of vulvovaginal candidiasis in Italy.

Eight Italian hospital or University gynecology clinics participated in a prospective survey of patients with culture-confirmed symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) (October 1999 to March 2001). Of 1138 patients recruited in the study, 931 were evaluable. A recent history of VVC was documented in 43.5% patients (358/823) with a mean number of 2.9+/-2.7 episodes per patient (N=302). A total of 77 patients (10.0%) had a history of recurrent VVC (four and more episodes in a 12-month period). The most frequent associated factors were related to life style: synthetic fabric underwear, vaginal

Vulvovaginal candidiasis in pregnancy treated with clotrimazole.

An open trial of local clotrimazole therapy in 56 pregnant women with vulvovaginal candidiasis is reported. The diagnosis was confirmed by mycotic culture. The patients were given one vaginal tablet daily and cream was applied to the vulva 2 or 3 times daily. Their male partners were treated with cream only. The duration of therapy was 6 days. Fifty of the patients (89.3%) were clinically cured after 6 days of therapy. Six patients (10.7%) had slight complaints and 10 (17.9%) without symptoms or signs of infection harboured Candida albicans or other yeast species in the genital tract. Six of t

Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Epidemiology, microbiology and risk factors.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an infection caused by Candida species that affects millions of women every year. Although Candida albicans is the main cause of VVC, the identification of non-Candida albicans Candida (NCAC) species, especially Candida glabrata, as the cause of this infection, appears to be increasing. The development of VVC is usually attributed to the disturbance of the balance between Candida vaginal colonization and host environment by physiological or nonphysiological changes. Several host-related and behavioral risk factors have been proposed as predisposing factors for

Phytotherapy of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis: A Narrative Review.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a real gynecological problem among women of reproductive age from 15 to 49. A recent analysis showed that 75% of women will have an occurrence at least once per year, while 5% are observed to have recurrent vaginal mycosis-these patients may become unwell four or more times a year. This pathology is caused in 85-90% of cases by fungi of the Candida albicans species. It represents an intractable medical problem for female patients due to pain and pruritus. Due to the observation of an increasing number of strains resistant to standard preparations and an increa

Clinical and morphopathological assay in vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Candida vulvovaginitis is characterized by the appearance of inflammatory changes in the vaginal and vulvar epithelium secondary to infection with Candida species. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the clinical, microbiological, and histopathological aspects of pregnant and non-pregnant patients, symptomatic or asymptomatic in the case of candida vaginitis and to correlate the microscopic aspects with the symptoms before applying the local treatment with Nystatin. The study presents a retrospective analysis of the management of vaginitis in 166 pregnant or non-pregnant patie

Probiotics for oral and vulvovaginal candidiasis: A review.

Dermatologists commonly prescribe medications such as antibiotics and corticosteroids that can increase the risk for candidiasis. Though conventional antifungals are often effective against candidiasis, they are not without side effects and species of Candida are gaining resistance. Probiotics help treat conditions such as post-antibiotic diarrhea and infectious diarrhea, and thus have the potential to help with Candida infections, as well. For this reason, we provide an overview of therapies prescribed in dermatology that may increase the risk for candidiasis, and we review the literature on

Alternative and complementary therapies for vulvovaginal candidiasis.

When it comes to women's health, treating vaginal infections makes up a high proportion of the gynecological services. Among the forms of vaginitis, vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is considered the second most common. Demand for new treatment alternatives is increasingly relevant, especially for therapies with fewer side effects, better tolerability, and lower cost, while still offering improved quality of life in terms of disease prevention. This study intended to investigate the alternative therapies described for the adjuvant treatment of vulvovaginitis caused by Candida species, including

The impact of oral contraception on vulvovaginal candidiasis.

To evaluate risk factors related to sociodemographic and clinical variables, oral contraception and sexual behavior of women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis, we conducted a case-control study comparing 153 patients with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis with both asymptomatic women with negative vaginal cultures and patients with nonrecurrent symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis. In logistic regression analysis, patients with recurrent Candida vaginitis were more likely than negative controls to have used any contraceptive method in the year before evaluation, to have used antibiotics

Epidemiology and pathogenesis of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Millions of women worldwide continue to suffer from vulvovaginal candidiasis, which is second only to anaerobic bacterial vaginosis in the United States. Evidence is presented of an increasing incidence of vulvovaginal candidiasis, the cause of which is unclear, but this increase is probably the result of multiple factors including widespread abuse of antibiotics, possibly oral contraceptives, and most important inadequate vaginal therapy. Some women never experience vulvovaginal candidiasis, others have infrequent episodes, and a third subpopulation have recurrent episodes resulting in consid

Bacterial Vaginosis and Vulvovaginal Candidiasis Pathophysiologic Interrelationship.

Among the infectious causes of vulvovaginal symptoms, bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) dominate. Apart from infrequent mixed infections, both are considered independent and caused by unrelated pathogenic mechanisms. Clinical experience, however, is strongly suggestive that in some populations these infections are linked with recurrent BV (RBV) serving as the dominant etiopathogenic trigger for development of recurrent VVC (RVVC) with profound clinical and therapeutic consequences. The biologic basis for this critical interrelationship is discussed and suggests that a
