It is estimated that annually between 1 and 4 million people are bitten by dogs in the United States. The vast majority of dog bites produce minor injuries, but serious sequelae, and even death, may occur. Annual mortality rates from dog attacks are reported at 7.2 cases per 100 million inhabitants each year. Of these fatalities, 69,8% involved a pet. Although dog bite-related injuries to humans appear to be a breed-specific problem (Pit Bulls and Rottweilers), other breeds also may bite and cause fatalities at high rates. Here we present the case of a couple slaughtered by their own three Can

Workers in developing countries face as many, if not more, work-related health problems as their counterparts in industrialized nations. This paper concentrates on occupational health problems in the sugar industry, which exists in 40 countries, mostly in the Third World. Sugar cane workers have a high level of occupational accidents and are exposed to the high toxicity of pesticides. They may also have an increased risk of lung cancer, possibly mesothelioma. This may be related to the practice of burning foliage at the time of cane-cutting. Bagassosis is also a problem specific to the industr

The most common cause of hip pain is osteoarthritis, which when combined with rheumatoid arthritis accounts for 90% of all hip pain diagnoses. Other conditions of the joint include fractures, synovitis, and avascular necrosis. There are three major conditions that mimic hip disease: nerve root pressure syndrome, trochanteric bursitis, and vascular insufficiency. Laboratory studies are often of little value for diagnosis. Careful examination and an awareness of possible mimicking and concomitant conditions can be more helpful. Treatment of hip disease should be conservative as long as the patie

Loss of fitness can be a consequence of selection for rapid dispersal ability in invasive species. Increased prevalence of spinal arthritis may occur in cane toad populations at the invasion front as a cost of increased invasiveness, but our knowledge of the ecological drivers of this condition is lacking. We aimed to determine the factors explaining the prevalence of spinal arthritis in populations across the Australian landscape. We studied populations across a gradient of invasion histories. We collected 2415 toads over five years and determined the presence and size of spondylosis for each

We detected a disease syndrome in free-ranging Australian cane toads involving atypical behavior and emaciation that is associated with a previously undescribed Entamoeba sp. that infiltrates the colonic lining, causing it to slough. The organism may become seasonally pathogenic when toads are under hydric and nutritional stress.

BACKGROUND: With the worldwide epidemic of obesity, there has been an increase in the numbers of procedures of bariatric surgery such as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Nevertheless, this type of surgery is not exempt from complications such as those described as "candy cane" Roux syndrome.
CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 34-year-old female with previous diagnosis of morbid obesity (BMI 38.5 kg/m(2)) who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass 2 years previously. Six months ago the patient presented intermittent epigastric pain of moderate intensity radiating towards the left hy

The effects of sugar cane extracts (SCE) on immune responses in chickens were studied. Two- or 10-month-old chickens orally administered SCE (500 mg/kg/day), for 3 consecutive days before immunized with sheep red blood cells, Brucella abortus and Salmonella Enteritidis organisms, showed significantly increased and prolonged antibody responses to these antigens, compared to control chickens without SCE. Furthermore, chickens orally administered SCE also revealed enhanced delayed type hypersensitivity responses to human gamma globulin. These results indicated that SCE has immunostimulating and a

The device described indicates accurately the amount of weight borne on an affected leg. This device consists of two major elements: a weight measuring system incorporated in the walking cane's body, and a feedback mechanism situated in the cane's handle. By means of vibration or lights the patient and the therapist can determine whether or not the affected leg is bearing the prescribed weight. Thirty patients (10 with fractures, 10 with vascular disorders, and 10 below-knee amputees) and 10 healthy people participated in the study. The study concluded that young patients used the feedback inf

Currently, robotics has been integrated into many areas of life, with health being one of the main ones, providing practical, novel, and safe solutions that lead people to a better lifestyle. Neurological and musculoskeletal disorders may affect up to 21% of the population at some point in their lives. Additionally, considering the growth of the elderly population in recent years, there is a need to find ways to improve the quality of life of individuals with mobility impairments. This paper presents the proposal and technical validation of a robotic assistance cane, by a preliminary analysis

The effect of cane ambulation on hip biomechanics has been well studied, but its effect on tibial strains and strain rates is not known. To test the hypothesis that cane use may lower tibial strain and strain rates during walking, percutaneous axial extensometers were mounted on the right medial cortex of the midtibial diaphysis in seven male volunteers. In vivo peak-to-peak axial tibial strains and strain rates were measured for ipsilateral and contralateral cane usage and compared with a no cane control. Cane-assisted ambulation was not found to significantly lower strain magnitudes; however

Clarifying the biomechanics of cane-assisted gait in elderly individuals and patients with gait disorders is important for developing better therapeutic interventions in the fields of rehabilitation and orthopedics. However, if the foot and the cane in the ipsilateral hand are placed on the same force plate simultaneously, the force plate cannot separate the forces as it records the sum of the forces. To overcome this indeterminacy problem of the ground reaction force (GRF) and the center of pressure (COP) in cane-assisted gait analysis, a method to partition the GRF and COP using an instrumen

A 12-year-old castrated male Cane Corso dog was presented with cervical swelling, lethargy, anorexia, and cough. An extensive neck mass with necrotic cysts was observed, severely adherent to surrounding tissues. Based on diagnostic imaging including ultrasound, computed tomography, and fine-needle aspiration cytology, paraesophageal abscess was tentatively diagnosed. However, after the mass was surgically removed, a diagnosis of thyroid carcinosarcoma composed of neoplastic cell populations with epithelial and mesenchymal origins was made via histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The dog di

Anthropogenic factors, including the spread of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, have been linked to alterations in the reproductive physiology, morphology, and behavior of wildlife. Few studies of endocrine disruption, however, focus on secondary sexual traits that affect mating signals, despite their importance for reproductive success. The larynx of many anurans (frogs and toads), for example, is larger in males than in females and is crucial for producing mating calls. We aim to determine if wild populations of cane toads (Rhinella marina) near sugarcane fields in Florida have demasculinized
