Public health emergency management capacity building in Guinea: 2014-2019.

Before the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak of 2014-2016, Guinea did not have an emergency management system in place. During the outbreak, Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) 2014-2019 funds made it possible to rapidly improve the country's capacity to manage epidemics through the development of public health emergency operation centres (PHEOCs) at the national and district levels. Since the end of the response, the infrastructure, staff, and systems of these PHEOCs have been further reinforced and well-integrated in the daily activities of Guinea's National Agency for Health Security, the

Building Tobacco Cessation Capacity in Homeless Shelters: A Pilot Study.

Tobacco use is common among homeless adults, yet few homeless shelters offer tobacco dependence treatment. Using a pre-intervention and post-intervention study design, we pilot tested the feasibility of a capacity building intervention that consisted of a 3.5-h training for shelter staff to provide cessation counseling. Staff (n = 12) and homeless clients (n = 46) completed questionnaires at pre-intervention, post-intervention (6 weeks), and at 12-weeks follow-up. Staff completed a questionnaire on tobacco-related knowledge, attitudes toward and practices around treating tobacco dependence, an

Building capacity in health systems with and for caregivers: A photovoice protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Unpaid caregivers-those who provide essential support to family, friends, or neighbours with disabilities, chronic conditions, mental health, or other health concerns-play a critical role in sustaining Canada's health and social systems. Despite their significant contributions, caregivers remain undervalued, under-recognized, and under-supported. This marginalization has led to elevated rates of burnout, mental health distress, and financial strain, disproportionately impacting women and racialized populations. The COVID-19 pandemic further revealed the systemic risks and potenti

Capacity building in environmental health research in India and Nepal.

The Fogarty International Training and Research Program in Environmental and Occupational Health at UC Berkeley concentrates on two major environmental health issues in the Indian subcontinent: arsenic in drinking water in West Bengal, India, and indoor air pollution in India and Nepal. Local trainees and researchers have had the opportunity to work on related research. Concerning arsenic in drinking water, projects included studies of skin lesions, pulmonary effects, reproductive outcomes, and child development, as well as mitigation approaches to reduce exposures. Activities in the indoor ai

Return on Returns: Building Scientific Capacity in AIDS Endemic Countries.

We examine public funding for health research through the United States National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center's AIDS International Training and Research Program, which sought to strengthen scientific capacity in AIDS-endemic countries by providing African researchers with training opportunities in the U.S. We use a difference-in-differences framework with information on scientists who participated in the program and the research activities of African scientists working at their home institutions in adjacent topics of neglected tropical diseases. Building Community Capacity in Mental Health: What Leaders Can Do.

While there is increased awareness of the burden of mental illness, the healthcare system has not developed sufficient community capacity to reduce reliance on hospitalization and incarceration for people with serious mental illness. There has been incremental progress, but more needs to be done. Increased funding and increased collaboration are critical ingredients for reform. The article reviews developments in community mental health over the past 50 years in Canada and provides observations about funding and the policy development process, as well as reflections on what leaders can do to p

Lessons learned from a health authority research capacity-building initiative.

Health systems worldwide are under pressure to deliver better care to more people with increasingly complex needs within constrained budgets. Research capacity building has been shown to help alleviate these challenges and is underway at hospitals and health authorities across the country; however, approaches vary widely and little exists in the Canadian literature to share experience and best practices. This article describes how a health authority in British Columbia, Canada, implemented and evaluated a 5-year research capacity-building program in partnership with a provincial health researc

Building community capacity to prevent violence through coalitions and partnerships.

This paper will explore the most effective strategic roles that coalitions can play in the prevention of complex, entrenched social and health problems such as violence, alcoholism, and other substance abuse problems. There is a growing body of "wisdom" and research literature that suggests that the most effective role for community coalitions and partnerships in terms of prevention is to build the capacity of community leaders and their institutions to better serve their constituencies. This can be accomplished through the use of the coalition to strengthen the enabling or support system for

Global research requires global researchers: Opportunities and challenges for capacity-building.

Inclusive global theories of child development require local researchers who spearhead research within their own communities. This means creating pathways for researchers from underrepresented contexts to lead projects, define priorities, and collaborate as equal partners, rather than merely act as data collectors. This capacity-building holds the promise of generating more accurate and equitable developmental science research.

Capacity Building Through Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy: Navigating Social Determinants of Health.

Neurocentric bias in psychiatry threatens to reduce psychedelics to neurobiological interventions and distort the experiential, social, and relational aspects of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT). PAT demands an ecological and relational orientation to fully account for the various phenomena implicated in mental health, psychedelics' effects, and outcomes of psychedelic experiences. The re-emergence of psychedelics as a legitimate therapeutic modality offers psychiatry an opportunity to embrace more holistic, humanistic, and socially grounded approaches. We argue that PAT should be framed as

Empowering tuberculosis genomic surveillance in Limpopo, South Africa through capacity building.

INTRODUCTION: Limpopo, a predominantly rural province in South Africa, faces significant challenges in the management of tuberculosis (TB) due to its high mobility and limited healthcare infrastructure. This study aims to improve the genomic surveillance of TB in Limpopo through capacity building initiatives. METHODS: A comprehensive training program was implemented that focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects of TB research, including whole genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics. Sputum samples from 232 patients diagnosed with pulmonary TB were collected, with 30 isolates selec

Building Clinical Nursing Research Capacity: A Scalable Multi-Institutional Fellowship Model.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Nursing Research Fellowship (NRF) is a structured, mentorship-driven program designed to strengthen clinical nursing research capacity across health systems. Originally developed within a single academic medical center, the fellowship expanded to a multi-institutional model providing protected time, PhD-prepared mentorship, and a standardized curriculum without requiring development of independent research infrastructure at each site. This article describes the NRF's structure, implementation across partner institutions, and organizational value, incl

Engaging Black and Latinx Communities in Building Capacity for Behavioral Health.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 affected nearly every aspect of people's lives worldwide. In the United States, the consequences of closures and quarantine increased stress, worry, isolation, and mental health and substance use problems, leading to behavioral health (BH) problems. These conditions were exacerbated among Black and Latinx populations by language barriers, lack of mental health access, shortage of mental health providers, inadequate or lack of insurance coverage, and the health care system's unfamiliarity with Black and Latinx cultures and consequent Black and Latinx distrust in it. METH

Mutual Capacity Building to Reduce the Behavioral Health Treatment Gap Globally.

Use of lay health workers for the treatment of common mental disorders is an expanding, yet still underutilized, opportunity for closing the behavioral health treatment gap globally. In this commentary, we describe how "mutual capacity building," an equal exchange of ideas between low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs) to promote shared learning, could promote the development and scale-up of therapies using lay health workers. We propose ways that task sharing models for behavioral health can inform and be supported by bidirectional learning across HICs and LM

Building Global Epidemiology and Response Capacity with Field Epidemiology Training Programs.

More than ever, competent field epidemiologists are needed worldwide. As known, new, and resurgent communicable diseases increase their global impact, the International Health Regulations and the Global Health Security Agenda call for sufficient field epidemiologic capacity in every country to rapidly detect, respond to, and contain public health emergencies, thereby ensuring global health security. To build this capacity, for >35 years the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has worked with countries around the globe to develop Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs). FETP trai

Capacity building for the modified filarial hydrocelectomy technique in West Africa.

To harmonise the technique of filarial hydrocelectomy throughout the West African subregion, training workshops were organized in 10 endemic West African countries involving surgeries on Filarial hydrocele patients (Filariceles). Countries included Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Liberia, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Togo. Patients were recruited by the Filariasis programme managers in all these countries and workshops were done to train surgeons from teaching, government and district hospitals with funding mainly from the West African Filariasis Project. A total of 16 workshop
