OBJECTIVE: Despite recent improvements in IOL design, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains a significant clinical problem after cataract surgery. The Perfect Capsule device (Milvella, Ltd., Epping, Australia) permits the introduction and subsequent removal of potentially toxic agents into the closed capsular bag. The present purpose was to detect the effectiveness of arsenic trioxide (As2O3) to cultured human lens cells and cells within the human capsular bag.
METHODS: All experiments were carried out with 2 minutes exposure to As2O3. Effect of As2O3 on FHL124 cells growth was tested

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification is one of the most common complications after cataract surgery. Studies have suggested that the introduction of a capsule tension ring might play a critical role in the prevention of capsule opacification, yet quantitative evidence is still lacking. This work consists of a meta-analysis on available data in order to explore the influence of a capsule tension ring on posterior capsule opacification.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on capsule tension ring and posterior capsule opacification was carried out using the Embase, Pubmed, W

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication after cataract extraction, despite the modern surgical techniques and lenses being used for this procedure. Its prevention challenged many investigators, because the current treatment of choice, capsulotomy with Nd:YAG laser, is associated with sight-threatening complications. In the present study, the authors investigated two approaches of preventing PCO using the CO2 laser.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 15-W CO2 laser with a 17- or 18-gauge hollow probe was used on 20 sheep eyes and 14 rabbit eyes. Lens extr

The type of healing process that occurs in response to cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is dependent on a complex set of variables. Their interactions determine whether or not optical clarity is restored as a result of this procedure. In this process, wound healing entails cells undergoing either epithelial-mesenchymal transition, resulting in the generation of fibroblastic cells and accumulation of extracellular matrix, or lenticular structure formation. Such desperate cellular behaviors are regulated by the localized release of different cytokines, including transform

PURPOSE: To present a bioactivity-based explanation for posterior capsule opacification (PCO) formation after cataract surgery.
SETTING: Central Hospital, Vaasa, Finland.
METHODS: The sandwich theory was based on findings in a keratoprosthesis study in which bioactivity of the prosthesis seemed to prevent epithelial downgrowth and clinical findings of the behavior of the AcrySof intraocular lens (IOL). The theory was formulated to explain PCO formation after cataract surgery with posterior chamber IOL implantation.
RESULTS: If the IOL were of a bioactive material, it would allow a single le

Phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation is the primary treatment for cataract. Although this treatment strategy benefits patients with cataracts, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains a common complication that impairs vision and affects treatment outcomes. The pathogenesis of PCO is associated with the proliferation, migration, and fibrogenesis activity of residual lens epithelial cells, with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) serving as a key mechanism underlying the condition. Transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-β2) is a major promotor of EMT, thereby

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains the most common long-term complication after cataract surgery. Many studies have attempted to identify factors that influence the development of PCO. The aim of this systematic review based on Cochrane methodology was to summarize the effects of intraocular lens (IOL) geometry, including modifications of the IOL optic (especially optic edge design) and haptics, on the development of PCO. Twenty-six prospective randomized controlled trials with a follow-up of at least 12 months were included. In 5 of 7 studies, visual acuity was better in sharp-edge

We report the histological findings in posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in 2 eyes of a 10-month-old infant 8 months after cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The PCO in the right eye had a regenerated lenticular structure; in the left eye, it was fibrotic. The PCO in the right eye was soft and aspirated with Simcoe's irrigation/aspiration cannula; in the left eye, it was excised surgically. Paraffin sections of the fibrous PCO tissue from the left eye were examined histologically. Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation and the pr

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most frequent long-term complication after cataract surgery, caused by proliferation of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs). Metformin, a common antidiabetic drug with antifibrotic properties, may act as a pharmacological modulator of this process. The purpose was to assess whether systemically administered metformin reaches the human lens capsule and inhibits LEC proliferation at physiologically relevant concentrations.
METHODS: Metformin concentrations were quantified in serum and lens capsule tissue of patients with type 2 dia
