Preparation of biomimetic hierarchically helical fiber actuators from carbon nanotubes.

Mechanically responsive materials that are able to sense and respond to external stimuli have important applications in soft robotics and the formation of artificial muscles, such as intelligent electronics, prosthetic limbs, comfort-adjusting textiles and miniature actuators for microfluidics. However, previous artificial muscles based on polymer materials are insufficient in generating large actuations, fast responses, diverse deformation modes and high cycle performances. To this end, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are proposed as promising candidates to be assembled into artificial muscles, as th

Carbon fiber scaffolds in the surgical treatment of cartilage lesions.

We present a new method of treatment of chondral defects of the knee with the usage of carbon fibers. The prospective study describes experience with carbon fibers used as scaffolds in the drilled lesions to enhance ingrowth of regenerative tissue. We treated 35 patients for chondral defects with that method from December 93 to June 97. Average age was 46 years (range, 19-68 years) and average follow-up was 48 months (range, 24-55 months). The results were assessed by HSS knee scale, the Wallgren-Tegner activity score, VAS (visual analogue scale to measure pain) and patients assessment of the

Light sensor based on carbon tetrachloride-infiltrated side-hole fiber.

We propose a high-sensitivity light sensor based on side-hole optical fiber filled with carbon tetrachloride. Using a fusion splicer, we employed a selective glue coating method to fill one of the air holes with liquid. Coupling occurs between the propagation modes of the liquid waveguide filled with carbon tetrachloride and the core propagation modes, resulting in resonant dips in the transmission spectrum. When the temperature changes, the refractive index of carbon tetrachloride changes, affecting the coupling and causing the wavelength of resonant dips to shift. In this experiment, the tem

Bone Stress Injuries in Runners Using Carbon Fiber Plate Footwear.

The introduction of carbon fiber plate footwear has led to performance benefits in runners. The mechanism for these changes in running economy includes altered biomechanics of the foot and ankle. The association of this footwear with injuries has been a topic of debate clinically, but not described in the literature. In this Current Opinion article, illustrated by a case series of five navicular bone stress injuries in highly competitive running athletes, we discuss the development of running-related injuries in association with the use of carbon fiber plate footwear. While the performance ben

Carbon fiber implants in osteochondral defects of the rabbit patella.

Carbon fiber implants were used to fill osteochondral defects created on the articular surface of the patella of 36 rabbits, for the purpose of studying the long-term histological changes of the repair process. Six months after surgery the defect was filled by fibrous tissue, where the superficial area was organized parallel to the joint surface. Fibrocartilage developed after 9 months and, after 12 months, the defects were covered by hyaline cartilage tissue.

Improving Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Composites Using Ionic Liquid-Modified Carbon Nanotube/Polyimide Sizing Agent.

To resolve the critical issues of insufficient interfacial adhesion and susceptibility to brittle fracture in carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites, an interfacial reinforcement interlayer was constructed within the interfacial region of the composites. This involved the design of a "rigid-flexible" synergistic reinforcement structure. Specifically, carbon nanotubes were modified with ionic liquids. The resulting modified rigid nanofillers, combined with flexible polyimide, were then firmly bonded to the carbon fiber surface. The construction of this interface layer effectively alleviated stre

Carbon fiber amperometry in the study of ion channels and secretion.

Activation of Ca2+ channels in the plasma membrane or on internal Ca2+ stores raises cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]c). Among diverse functions of Ca2+ signals, the induction of exocytosis-the process in which the contents of secretory vesicles are released by their fusion to the plasma membrane-is one of the most important. For example, in neurons and endocrine cells, it allows intercellular communication and secretion of biomolecules. Exocytosis can be detected by several physical and chemical means. By chemically oxidizing the released secretory products at a fixed electrode potential,

Adjusted active carbon fibers for solid phase microextraction.

Adjusted active carbon fiber (AACF) was evaluated for Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME), which showed higher sensitivity and stability than traditional coating fibers. The characteristics of AACF result from two different activation methods (chemical and water vapor) and from variable activation conditions (temperature and time). The fiber treated by water vapor appears to have stronger affinity to polar compounds, while that treated by chemical activation appears to have stronger affinity to non-polar compounds. For different target compounds ranged from non-polar to polar, AACF design could

Carbonic anhydrase inhibition and calcium transients in soleus fibers.

We simultaneously measured cytoplasmic Ca2+ transients using Fura-2 and isometric force in rat soleus fiber bundles. In the presence of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, chlorzolamide, we observed a decreased amplitude and retarded decay of the Ca2+ signal. This corresponded with a decreased isometric force and a retarded muscle relaxation. We conclude that muscle carbonic anhydrase participates in excitation-contraction coupling, possibly by rapidly providing protons that are exchanged for Ca2+ across the sarcoplasmic reticulum membrane.

Impact of carbon-based fibers morphologies on their carcinogenic potential.

BACKGROUND: Carbon based fibers are considered to exhibit a carcinogenic potency when inhaled into the deep lung. Mesotheliomas develop after intraperitoneal application of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) exceeding a diameter of about 37 nm, whereas carcinogenic potency decreases for diameters below this threshold. While large MWCNT diameters are associated with a rigid fiber geometry, this study examined the effects of MWCNTs with smaller diameters ranging from 10 to 30 nm. Also, a sample of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibiting single fiber diameters significantly below 1

Rheological Pathways to a Scalable Ruthenium Nuclei-Anchored Carbon Fiber Catalyst.

Carbon fiber-based electrocatalysts offer significant advantages over conventional powder catalysts, including enhanced active site exposure, superior conductivity, faster reaction rates, lower costs, and improved stability under harsh conditions. In this study, we introduce a rapid and scalable method for spinning carbon-supported metal catalysts into their fibrous forms to achieve uniform catalyst structures that enable roll-to-roll manufacturing. We demonstrate uniform ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticle-loaded carbon fibers by spinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-Ru phenanthroline complexes and anneal

Bioinspired Microcavities Enhancing the Interface of Fe-Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer.

Laser micro-drilling was applied to Fe substrates to enhance the interfacial properties of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer/iron laminates. This architecture is referred to as a resin-interlocked Fe-CFRP hybrid composite. Inspired by human hair follicles' exceptional adhesion and filling efficiency, novel biomimetic frustum-integrated cylindrical cavities were engineered for Fe surface modification. Experimental results demonstrate that laser-processed surfaces with varied hole geometries (conical, conical frustum, cylindrical, and frustum-integrated cylindrical cavities) exhibit significantly

Ultrasensitive and Wearable Carbon Hybrid Fiber Devices as Robust Intelligent Sensors.

The growing applications of wearable electronics, electronic textiles, and biomedical devices have sparked explosive demand for high-performance flexible sensors. Herein, we report a facile approach for fabricating a highly sensitive carbon hybrid fiber, which is composed of a graphene fiber skeleton and carbon nanotube (CNT) branches. In this hierarchical fiber, in situ grown CNTs prohibit the stacking of graphene sheets and bridge graphene layers simultaneously, making the hybrid fiber fluffy and conductive. Due to the well-designed architecture, the assembled fiber sensor exhibits satisfact

Plantar loading during cutting while wearing a rigid carbon fiber insert.

CONTEXT: Stress fractures are one of the most common injuries in sports, accounting for approximately 10% of all overuse injuries. Treatment of fifth metatarsal stress fractures involves both surgical and nonsurgical interventions. Fifth metatarsal stress fractures are difficult to treat because of the risks of delayed union, nonunion, and recurrent injuries. Most of these injuries occur during agility tasks, such as those performed in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of a rigid carbon graphite footplate on plantar loading during 2 agility tasks. DESIGN: Cro
