Aptamer-conjugated carbon-based nanomaterials for cancer and bacteria theranostics: A review.

Aptamers are single-stranded oligonucleotides that link to various substrates with great affinity and selectivity, including small molecules, peptides, proteins, cells, and tissues. For this reason, they can be used as imaging agents for cancer imaging techniques. Multifunctional nanomaterials combined with imaging probes and drugs are promising cancer diagnosis and treatment candidates. On the other hand, carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs), including such as fullerene, carbon nanotubes, carbon-based quantum dots, carbon nanohorns, graphene oxide and its derivatives carbon nanodots, and nanodia

Supramolecular gels from lipopeptide gelators: template improvement and strategies for the in-situ preparation of inorganic nanomaterials and for the dispersion of carbon nanomaterials.

Lipopeptide amphiphiles are an important class of biobased and biomimetic surfactants that are easily prepared from the cheapest organic reagents, such as natural fatty and amino acids, and in many cases, the resulting compounds are able to harden not only common organic solvents but also waxes, water and ionic liquids. Well-tailored, these gelators can be selective for one variety of liquid, which leads to the formation of a robust gel that is able to incorporate various different elements. In this review, we attempted to provide our opinion regarding the molecular design of the lipopeptide g

Ambient N2 Reduction to NH3 Electrocatalyzed by Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Supported CoP Nanomaterials.

At present, more than 80% of ammonia is obtained by the Haber-Bosch process with harsh reaction conditions and high energy consumption. Considering these energy consumption and gas emission problems, it is important to design an environmentally friendly and low-carbon ammonia synthesis method under mild conditions to enhance nitrogen fixation. Ammonia synthesis via an electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) is deemed a promising alternative, but stable and efficient electrocatalysts are highly desired. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoP nanomaterials (CoP@NC) are successfu

Activated Iron-Porous Carbon Nanomaterials as Adsorbents for Methylene Blue and Congo Red.

The adsorption properties of microporous carbon materials modified with iron citrate were investigated. The carbon materials were produced based on resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, treated in a microwave assisted solvothermal reactor, and next carbonized in the tube furnace at a temperature of 700 °C under argon atmosphere. Iron citrate was applied as a modifier, added to the material precursor before the synthesis in the reactor, in the quantity enabling to obtain the nanocomposites with C:Fe mass ratio equal to 10:1. Some samples were additionally activated using potassium oxalate or potassium

N-doped carbon nanomaterials as fluorescent pH and metal ion sensors for imaging.

Herein we describe the facile synthesis of new N-doped carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) obtained from 1,10-phenanthroline by the solvothermal method. Characterization of CNPs were carried out with transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), UV-vis absorption spectra, and luminescence spectra. CNPs were pH sensitive and exploited as fluorescent chemosensors and imaging agents for Al(III) and Zn(II) ions in real-life samples. Remarkably, we show that CNPs can be used for the detection of Al(III) and Zn(II) ions in water samples

Functionalization and Dispersion of Carbon Nanomaterials Using an Environmentally Friendly Ultrasonicated Ozonolysis Process.

Functionalization of carbon nanomaterials is often a critical step that facilitates their integration into larger material systems and devices. In the as-received form, carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), may contain large agglomerates. Both agglomerates and impurities will diminish the benefits of the unique electrical and mechanical properties offered when CNTs or GNPs are incorporated into polymers or composite material systems. Whilst a variety of methods exist to functionalize carbon nanomaterials and to create stable dispersions, many t

Carbon nanomaterials for tau targeting in Alzheimer's disease: Theranostic strategies and clinical prospects.

Tauopathies, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), are characterized by the pathological aggregation of tau proteins, culminating in progressive neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. Conventional therapeutic strategies remain limited by inadequate blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration, insufficient specificity for tau pathology, and lack of real-time disease monitoring. While carbon-based nanomaterials have been extensively investigated for amyloid-β related applications, their potential for tau-directed theranostics remains at an early yet rapidly advancing state. Carbon-based nanomaterials-

Carbon dots decorated cadmium sulfide nanomaterials for boosting photocatalytic activity for ciprofloxacin degradation.

This study investigates the utilization of carbon dots (CDs) from neem leaves (Azadirachta indica) decorated onto cadmium sulfide (CdS) for the photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin. A comparative study of ciprofloxacin degradation with pristine CdS and CD decorated CdS demonstrated high degradation of ∼ 75 % with CD/CdS when compared to bare CdS (∼68 %). Process optimization studies were further carried out with CD/CdS catalysts at different solution pH (4-10), feed concentrations (10-50 mg/L), catalyst loadings (25-125 mg/L), temperatures (10 - 30 °C), and lamp power (25, 50, 250 W and

Accelerated polyethylene biodegradation in soil through carbon nanomaterial-primed rhizospheres.

Polyethylene accounts for the majority of terrestrial plastic waste, yet its chemical inertness resists natural decomposition in soil. Rhizoremediation offers a strategy that combines plant and microbe activity, but recalcitrant C-C backbones create a kinetic bottleneck that historically restricts plastic mass loss to under 3%. Here we show that engineered carbon nanomaterials prime the plant rhizosphere to breach this kinetic barrier, driving accelerated polyethylene biodegradation in soil. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes accelerated surface-layer breakdown, achieving 12.1% mass loss within 90

Exploration of glutaredoxin-1 oxidative modification in carbon nanomaterial-induced hepatotoxicity.

Herein, we present toxicological assessments of carbon nanomaterials in HL-7702 cells, and it was found that reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were elevated. Mass spectrometry results indicated that cysteine sulfhydryl of glutaredoxin-1 (GLRX1) was oxidized to sulfenic acids and sulfonic acids by excessive ROS, which broke the binding of GLRX1 to apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1, causing the activation of the JNK/p38 signaling pathway and ultimately hepatocyte apoptosis. However, a lower level of ROS upregulated GLRX1 instead of sulfonation modification of its active sites. Highly expre

The potential of carbon-based nanomaterials in hepatitis C virus treatment: a review of carbon nanotubes, dendrimers and fullerenes.

HCV, hepatitis C virus, is a virus that causes damage to the liver. Both chronic infection or lack of treatment increase morbidity except if it is an acute infection, as the body clears the virus without any intervention. Also, the virus has many genotypes, and until now, there has yet to be a single treatment capable of affecting and treating all these genotypes at once. This review will discuss the main and most used old treatments, IFN-a, PEG IFN-a, Ribavirin, Celgosvir, and sofosbuvir alone and with the combination of other drugs and their drawbacks. They should be given in combination to

Clinical translation of carbon nanomaterials: the clinical translation paradox, regulatory barriers, and future pathways.

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have generated intense research interest owing to their exceptional physicochemical versatility and broad biomedical potential. However, despite two decades of rapid innovation, the clinical translation of CNMs remains strikingly limited, owing to a persistent mismatch between performance-driven material innovation and predictability-driven clinical and regulatory demands-an enduring clinical translation paradox that urgently requires systematic resolution. This review examines four representative CNM classes-carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, a

Antibiotics in livestock wastewater treatment by using biomass-derived activated carbon supported ZnS nanomaterials.

A new type of composite photocatalyst material was successfully prepared through the ultrasound-assisted coprecipitation method precipitate of zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanomaterials on peach wood activated carbon (PAC). The optimization of ZnS@PAC demonstrates excellent photocatalytic performance by using the response surface method (RSM), which is essential for improving photocatalytic performance. In this model it was found that the photocatalytic degradation of enrofloxacin (ENR) increased with microwave heating power and ZnS concentration, whereas it decreased with increasing activation time. Carbon-Extraction-Triggered Phase Engineering of Rhodium Nanomaterials for Efficient Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction Reaction.

Phase engineering plays a crucial role in tuning the physicochemical properties of noble metal nanomaterials. However, synthesis of high-purity unconventional-phase noble metal nanomaterials remains highly challenging via current wet-chemical methods. Herein, we develop a unique synthetic methodology to prepare freestanding unconventional hexagonal close-packed (2H) Rh nanoplates (NPLs) via a rationally designed two-step strategy. By extracting C from pre-synthesized rhodium carbide of different sizes and morphology, phase-controlled synthesis of Rh nanomaterials can be achieved. Impressively,

Effects of Carbon Nanomaterials and Aloe vera on Melanomas-Where Are We? Recent Updates.

Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer that affects approximately 140,000 people worldwide each year, with a high fatality rate. Available treatment modalities show limited efficacy in more severe cases. Hence, the search for new treatment modalities, including immunotherapies, for curing, mitigating, and/or preventing cancer is important and urgently needed. Carbon nanoparticles associated with some plant materials, such as Aloe vera, have shown appealing antineoplastic activity, derived mainly from the compounds aloin, aloe-emodin, barbaloin acemannan, and octapeptide, thus representing new p

Impact of carbon nanomaterials on the behaviour of 14C-phenanthrene and 14C-benzo-[a] pyrene in soil.

The impact of fullerene soot (FS), single-walled (SWCNTs) and multi-walled (MWCNTs) carbon nanotubes on the behaviour of two (14)C-PAHs in sterile soil was investigated. Different concentrations of carbon nanomaterials (0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5%) were added to soil, and (14)C-phenanthrene and (14)C-benzo[a]pyrene extractability assessed over 80 d through dichloromethane (DCM) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) shake extractions. Total (14)C-PAH activity in soils was determined by combustion, and mineralisation of (14)C-phenanthrene was monitored over 14 d, using a catabolically active pseudom
