Neuroendocrine carcinomas combine a heterogeneous group of tumors occurring in lungs on a rare occasion, and in some cases, they appear to have extraordinary quick growth and extrapulmonary localization. In this case we present a 42-year-old patient who underwent a right upper lobectomy for emphysema, and 6 months later, the tumor developed again into a giant neuroendocrine carcinoma of the mediastinum.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) mostly develop from the neural crest cells but a few arise from neuroectoderm. They are common in the lungs and gastrointestinal tract but rare in the genitourinary tract. A 78-year-old man with no family history of malignant or hereditary diseases presented with a 3-month history of a rapidly growing asymptomatic scrotal nodule and swelling in the groin. He had a negative history of sexually transmitted disease and of trauma, fungal infection or chronic irritation in the scrotal area; there was no history of radiotherapy or exposure to chemicals or arsenic. Large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma (LCUC) arising in the submandibular gland is so rare that there have been only a few reported cases. We encountered a 65-year-old Japanese male, whose left submandibular gland was enlarged due to LCUC. Exenteration of the left submandibular gland together with selective neck dissection was performed, followed by postoperative radiotherapy. Current literature concerning the histopathological and clinical features of this neoplasm was reviewed.

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is a rare type of thymic epithelial tumor. It is recognized as a different entity from other thymic tumors on account of it having a more aggressive biologic behavior and poor prognosis. We report an extremely rare case of a very small, "large cell neuroendocrine thymic carcinoma" coexisting within a large thymoma that could not be detected by usual biopsy. Surgery as the initial treatment has the significance of definitive diagnosis and curative treatment for LCNEC of the thymus. To make a successful differential diagnosis, application of detailed i

Combined large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lungs (combined LCNEC) with giant cell carcinoma is extremely rare. A 65-year-old man was found to have an abnormal shadow in his left lung field. Computed tomography revealed a solid, round mass measuring 2.8 × 2.2 cm that was located in the left S9. The patient underwent left lower lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection. Histopathological examination revealed an LCNEC, combined with giant cell carcinoma. The patient received by S-1 (TS-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine) chemotherapy, and he has been disease-free for over 8 months. Combin

Primary breast large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC)/squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), also referred to as mixed neuroendocrine/non-neuroendocrine neoplasms of the breast (Br-MiNENs), represents an exceedingly rare malignancy. We report the first case of primary breast LCNEC/SCC diagnosed via ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of the left supraclavicular and left internal mammary lymph nodes. The patient, a 40-year-old female, underwent a lumpectomy followed by breast-conserving surgery and was diagnosed with primary breast LCNEC. Notably, within merely four months follow

Functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma (pNEC) is relatively less common. Here, we report a middle-aged lady, initially diagnosed as primary ductal carcinoma of the breast with multiple metastases, who was managed with excision biopsy of the breast tumor and palliative chemotherapy elsewhere. She later developed recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia following chemotherapy and was found to have hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia, clearly suggestive of insulinoma. Ga-68 DOTANOC PET-CT scan showed DOTA-avid primary lesion in pancreas with intense uptake in several sites, including liver, bilatera

BACKGROUND: S100A7 is a secreted protein and its overexpression has been previously associated with carcinogenesis of certain cancers. This study was undertaken to investigate the possibility that overexpression of S100A7 protein might be detected in the sera of patients with lung cancer.
METHODS: RNA and protein levels of S100A7 were examined in 60 pairs of frozen lung cancer tissues by RT-PCR and western blot. The specific expression of this protein and its cellular distribution were investigated in 145 paraffin embedded lung cancer samples, six benign lung disease and 21 normal lung tissue

BACKGROUND: Histopathological transformation between different types of lung cancer cells has been reported following a variety of anti-tumor treatments. Examples include transformation from lung adenocarcinoma to squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) and transformation from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
CASE REPORT: A patient with intermittent hemoptysis for 2 days underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan that revealed interstitial pneumonia in addition to two enlarged paratracheal lymph nodes: one on the right (4R) and one on the left (4L) measuring 10 and 7

BACKGROUND: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC) of the colon are an extremely rare and aggressive type of colorectal cancer. While multifocality is more frequently seen in small intestine NECs, no cases of multifocal NEC of the colon have been reported before.
AIM: A 69-year-old male patient presented with abdominal pain. Colonoscopy revealed a necrotic-polypoid mass in the sigmoid colon and the biopsy result was reported as malignant epithelial tumor. Laparoscopic anterior resection was performed with the preliminary diagnosis of colon adenocarcinoma. Histopathological examination r

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the larynx is an exceedingly rare cancer of the head and neck that is difficult to diagnose. Few case reports of laryngeal LCNEC exist within the literature, and it was not until recently that LCNEC was recognized as a discrete subtype of neuroendocrine carcinoma. Given its recent recognition as a distinct subtype, histologic characteristics distinguishing LCNEC from other poorly differentiated carcinomas remain under investigation. Various reports have shown genetic alterations such as p53 and/or p16 overexpression, which are typically associated

Anterior mediastinal large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNECs) are extremely rare, extremely aggressive malignancies that carry a dismal prognosis. We discuss a woman aged 60 years who presented with a 2-month history of recurrent severe constant epigastric pain. Abdominal examination revealed massive hepatomegaly and a CT scan of the liver confirmed coarse liver lesions. Histology from a liver biopsy was consistent with a large cell (non-small cell) neuroendocrine carcinoma. A CT scan of the chest showed a large anterior mediastinal mass unrelated to the lung, suggesting that the anterior

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder is rare. In the last five years, we have had the opportunity to see this type of cancer in an 88-year-old and in a 66-year-old males. In both cases, transurethral resection of carcinoma of the bladder was carried out. In the first case, urothelial carcinoma was detected and deeper in the bladder wall, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma structures were found. In the second case, the bladder was only infiltrated with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Both tumors expressed NSE, CD56 and synaptophysin. Other markers, such as those agai

PURPOSE: To report a unique case of primary undifferentiated large cell carcinoma (LCCA) of the lacrimal gland, a tumor not previously described in the ophthalmic literature.
DESIGN: Single interventional case report.
PARTICIPANTS: A patient affected by undifferentiated LCCA of the lacrimal gland.
METHODS: A 65-year-old white man with a 3-month history of a painful mass in the left lacrimal gland fossa underwent an incisional biopsy that revealed a "high-grade" epithelial malignancy. Systemic workup revealed enlargement of the regional lymph nodes, and subsequently the patient underwent ext

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is a high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma, originally described in the lung. The tumor rarely occurs in extrapulmonary sites like the gastrointestinal tract, and only few examples have been described in the ampulla of Vater. A new case of large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater in a 60-year-old man is reported. After pancreatoduodenectomy, macroscopic examination revealed ulcerated tumor in the region of the ampulla of Vater. Microscopically, the tumor exhibited organoid, predominantly nested growth pattern, consisting of large, polygonal

We report a case of a 73-year-old female with a rare simultaneous occurrence of three tumors: ovarian carcinoma, endometrial carcinoma, and breast carcinoma. The ovarian tumor was a primary pure large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Grossly, the left ovary was enlarged by a solid tumor that measured 9 x 7 x 7 cm. Histologically, the tumor consisted of large cells with irregular hyperchromatic nuclei and a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm. In some areas, the tumor cells were arranged in solid sheets; however, the predominant pattern was cribriform and solid-alveolar, with palisaded tumo

The incidence of cardiac metastases is rising due to increasingly sensitive diagnostic investigations and longer patient survival as a result of improved treatment for malignancies. We report a rare case of right atrial metastasis from a large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma successfully resected with cardiopulmonary bypass. The surgical management of advanced cardiac malignancy is discussed. In appropriately selected cases surgical resection of cardiac metastases can be beneficial, allowing improvement in quality of life, and prolongation of life.

Germline inactivation of LKB1 is responsible for Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by benign hamartomas of the GI tract and an increased predisposition to certain cancers, including lung. Acquired mutations in LKB1 are rarely observed in most sporadic tumor types except for adenocarcinomas of the lung where up to 50% harbor inactivating mutations. In this study, we focused on LKB1 mutations in lung cancer cell lines originating from large cell carcinomas. We identified a novel 1.5kb interstitial deletion within LKB1 gene in H157 cancer cells.
