Mucoepidermoid carcinoma with cutaneous presentation.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas are malignant neoplasms that rarely involve the skin. Composed of both mucus-secreting cells and epidermoid-type cells in various proportions, mucoepidermoid carcinomas occur most commonly in salivary glands. In this case report, we describe a high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma with cutaneous involvement. Although this patient was referred for Mohs' micrographic surgery, further evaluation showed either direct or metastatic extension from the parotid gland to skin and distant metastases to the lung and bone. Despite extensive bone involvement, serum levels of ionized

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of salivary glands.

We reviewed the pathologic slides and clinical data of 44 patients with mucoepidermoid carcinomas of major and minor salivary glands. There were 14 well-differentiated, 20 intermediate, and ten poorly differentiated tumors. Two tumors appeared to have only expansive growth. All of the others were invasive, and we identified two patterns of invasion: broad pushing borders and infiltrative permeation. Infiltrative permeation was seen in 13 of 34 well-differentiated and intermediate tumors of which four (31%) metastasized, and in eight of ten poorly differentiated tumors of which five (63%) metas

Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, mucinous metaplasia involving Warthin tumor: three case reports.

Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a recently identified MEC variant of the salivary gland. MEC morphologically mimics Warthin tumor (WT) but harbors the same chromosomal translocation t (11; 19) (q21; p13) as MEC. Thus, differential diagnosis is crucial. MEC involving WT is extremely rare in salivary glands. In this study, we reported a case of Warthin-like MEC, a case of MEC co-existing with WT, and a case of mucinous metaplasia in WT. We also discussed the possible link between WT and MEC.

Intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the mandible.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma starts in the salivary glands and accounts for 5%-10% of all salivary gland tumours. Its intraosseous occurrence is rare and only accounts for 2%-3% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. This neoplasm often follows a long and indolent course. Also, given its ambiguous presentation and similarities to other dental pathologies, it often has a late diagnosis. In this instance, we present the case of a patient with an asymptomatic mandibular lesion, who underwent mandibular resection and reconstruction with fibula free flap. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old male patient

A Case of Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Larynx.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a common malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands. While quite common in the oral cavity, it is rare in the larynx. A middle-aged male patient presented to the otolaryngology clinic of our institution with the chief complaint of hoarseness. A supraglottic subepithelial mass was detected on the left laryngeal ventricle after a comprehensive clinical examination. Eventually, the diagnosis was established with a biopsy after a direct laryngoscopy. The multidisciplinary team of our institution suggested total laryngectomy without adjuvant modalities. An uneventful proc

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the base of tongue.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant, locally-invasive tumour of the salivary glands, and accounts for approximately 35% of all malignancies of the major and minor salivary gland. Minor salivary glands are scattered in different areas of the oral cavity such as palate, retromolar area, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, lips and tongue. MECs of tongue base are not common. We present a rare case of MEC localised at the tongue base in a 42-year-old Caucasian woman and discuss the histopathological types, management and review the literature. Adequate intra-oral excision wa

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid.

Two cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland associated with extensive central sclerosis and peripheral lymphoid response are reported. This unusual but distinctive variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma can be difficult to recognize and may be confused with chronic sialoadenitis or even metastasis to an intraparotid lymph node.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hard palate.

A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma originating in the hard palate was presented. Histological diagnosis of the removed mass at the first operation was pleomorphic adenoma. Tumor recurred at the same site three years later. Subtotal maxillectomy was performed and recurrent tumor was histologically diagnosed as low grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma. A two-year follow-up showed no evidence of recurrence. The low grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma strongly resembles pleomorphic adenoma. The differential diagnosis is important for the better treatment and prognosis.

Mucoacinar Carcinoma: A Rare Variant of Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is generally characterized by an admixture of mucous, epidermoid and intermediate type cells. Numerous variants morphologies are described and defined by stromal and/or cytoplasmic tinctorial characteristics. We now report 11 cases of MEC with serous acinar differentiation, reflecting a distal intercalated duct/acinar phenotype, which we designate as mucoacinar carcinomas. Seven patients were female while 4 were male with a mean age of 55 years (range: 21 to 72 y). Ten cases were from the parotid while 1 was from the submandibular gland. Mean size of the tumors w

Child with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma originates from the submucosal glands of the tracheobronchial tree. It is structurally homologous with exocrine salivary glands. It is a rare tumour, consisting of 0.1% to 0.2% of primary lung malignancies.Complete surgical resection is the treatment of choice and is associated with an excellent prognosis. Here we present a case where a boy in his teenage years came with a dry cough and haemoptysis.Contrast-enhanced CT confirmed the presence of a polypoidal enhancing space-occupying lesion arising from the right anterolateral aspect of the carina, protruding into the ri

Secondary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the orbit.

A 40-year-old man presented with right eye axial proptosis and ophthalmoplegia for 3 months. Imaging study showed a right intraconal mass with the erosion of the orbital floor. Incisional biopsy revealed mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Nasal endoscopy was normal and systemic tumor screening was negative for a primary source. The patient underwent right orbital exenteration, uncinectomy, nasal and maxillary mucosal biopsy. Malignant cells were found present in the mucosa of maxillary sinus roof and uncinate bone. The postoperative positron emission tomography scan showed residual active lesion in rig

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Palatine Tonsil.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common primary salivary gland malignancy in both adults and children. It has a slight female predilection and usually presents as a painless, rubber-like or soft mass, which may be fixed or mobile. Histologically, MEC is comprised of a mixture of cell types including mucous, epidermoid, and intermediate cells that can be arranged in solid nests or cystic structures. In the oral cavity, it most frequently occurs at the palate or buccal mucosa. The present paper aimed to describe an unusual case of MEC arising in the palatine tonsil.

[Prognosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the bronchi].

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid cancer is exceptional in the respiratory tract, accounting for only 0.2% of primary lung cancers. CASE REPORTS: We report three cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The inaugural signs were hemoptysia in a 10-year-old child, recurrent lower respiratory tract infections in a 13-year-old child, and dyspnea with chest pain in a 32-year-old adult. Bronchial fibroscopy disclosed a proximal endobronchial tumor in all three patients. Pathology study of the operative specimen identified low-grade malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the two children and high-grade malignant

[A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus].

A 19-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with anterior mediastinal cystic tumor. Subtotal thymectomy with the tumor was performed. The tumor was localized inside the thymus without outer infiltration. It weighed 145 g and measured 9 x 8 x 5 cm. The cut surface was cystic and spongy, partially with a solid focus. Pathological findings of the solid area was compatible with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus. The histogenesis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus was discussed.
