Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the oral cavity.

We report the clinical and pathologic features of a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma arising in the oral cavity of a 63-year-old man. The tumor stained positively with neuron-specific enolase and had dense core granules ultrastructurally. Chemotherapy ordinarily given for pulmonary small cell carcinoma induced a clinical remission. When the tumor recurred 8 mo later, focal squamous differentiation was present within the neuroendocrine carcinoma. The patient died 2.5 yr after presentation.

Melanocytic neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus.

A neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus with an ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome and melanocytic differentiation is described. ACTH, neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S-100 protein were identified in the tumor by immunocytochemistry. Neurosecretory granules and melanosomes could be demonstrated in different cell populations by electronmicroscopy. The clinicopathologic findings are presented. The literature is briefly discussed.

A circular RNA in neuroendocrine carcinomas.

In this issue of Cancer Cell, Teng et al. discover that small cell lung cancer and neuroendocrine prostate cancer highly express a circular RNA known as circRMST. They show that circRMST is necessary for these neuroendocrine cancers to promote their ASCL1-positive neuroendocrine phenotype through binding lineage transcription factors that promote ASCL1 expression.

Hyperferritinemia as a Clue to Neuroendocrine Carcinoma.

Ferritin is the protein that serves as the main mechanism for iron storage. It can also be an acute-phase reactant, which may rise in response to inflammation, infection, injury, autoimmune disease, or malignancy. Therefore, when evaluating ferritin levels, it is important to consider both iron storage and potential underlying conditions that could cause hyperferritinemia. We report a case of an elderly man in his late 80s who had elevated ferritin levels for years before ultimately being diagnosed with metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma. The initial diagnosis was suspected to be due to iron

Update on Neuroendocrine Carcinomas of the Larynx.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas are heterogeneous neoplasms characterized by neuroendocrine differentiation. Their prognoses are dependent on tumor type, therefore different classifications have been developed. Moreover, other tumors have overlapping pathologic features posing a range of diagnostic possibilities. METHODS: A review of the literature was performed to comprehensively understand the classification and diagnosis of these tumors. RESULTS: We review the past and present classification systems, with emphasis to the latest 2017 World Health Organization Classification

[A Case of Breast Neuroendocrine Carcinoma].

A 73-year-old woman visited our hospital with the chief complaint of a mass in the left breast. Breast ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic area in the left breast. A core needle biopsy showed the proliferation of solid tumor cells. Immunohistochemistry indicated strongly positive expression of E-cadherin, synaptophysin, and chromogranin A. We then diagnosed her with breast neuroendocrine carcinoma. The expression of estrogen receptor(ER)and progesterone receptor(PgR)were also strongly positive, and the expression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2)was negative. Computed tomogra

Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus.

Primary neuroendocrine tumors of the thymus, previously known as carcinoid tumors of the thymus, are unusual and rare tumors, and prognosis for these patients has been difficult to predict. We hereby report a case of primary neuroendocrine tumor of the thymus that had an aggressive and fatal course in spite of surgical resection and adjuvant chemotherapy. These tumors must be regarded as a malignant neoplasm that is prone to metastasize to distant sites, even after total excision.

[Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the parotid gland].

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine carcinomas are rarely observed in the parotid gland. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old woman with an uneventful history was hospitalised for a tumor in the left parotid gland which had progressed for 8 months. The clinical manifestations and the radiological findings were in favour of a malignant process involving the parotid gland. Search for local and regional extension was considered to be negative. The surgical procedure was very difficult but enabled conservative resection of the tumor by total parotidectomy. Pathology results were in favour of a neuroendocrine carc

Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the thymus.

Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the thymus are rare and comprise a wide spectrum of lesions ranging from well-differentiated to poorly-differentiated neoplasms. The classification of such tumors in the thymus is still controversial. By convention, the better-differentiated examples have been traditionally designated as thymic carcinoids and thought to represent the mediastinal counterpart of carcinoid tumors in other foregut locations. However, recent studies have shown that such neoplasms, when arising in the thymus, exhibit a much more aggressive behavior than those originating at other

Laryngeal paragangliomas and neuroendocrine carcinomas.

Forty-eight neuroendocrine tumours of the larynx were studied, of which 41 were classified as large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Most of these tumours occurred in the supraglottic larynx and the patients were predominantly male. Exquisite pain was a presenting feature in one third. These carcinomas metastasized, frequently to skin, giving rise to painful secondary lesions, but long-time survival occurred. Histologically, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma had a number of features seen in neuroendocrine tumours at other sites, including grouping into 'Zellballen' which mimics paraganglioma.

Carcinomas of the lung with neuroendocrine differentiation.

While there are examples of each of the histologic types of bronchogenic carcinoma in which ectopic hormone production has been demonstrated, three groups of lung cancers manifest this type of differentiation with great regularity. These are the carcinoid, atypical carcinoid, and the small cell carcinoma, which have been called neuroendocrine carcinomas of the lung. The carcinoids are neoplasms with a heterogeneous array of histologic appearances that share relatively uniform nuclear features, the absence of both tumor necrosis and mitotic figures, and a good prognosis. Neuroendocrine differen

Neuroendocrine Neoplasms of the Sinonasal Tract: Neuroendocrine Carcinomas and Olfactory Neuroblastoma.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) can occur in organs or tissues that do not contain neuroendocrine cells normally and do not necessarily imply embryologic derivation from the neuroectoderm; but rather reflect a shared phenotype characterized by the expression of multiple genes encoding both endocrine and neuronal features. NENs are rare in the sinonasal tract and are subdivided into epithelial and neural subtypes based on the presence of keratins or neurofilaments, respectively. Although relatively rare, neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) and olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) are the most common neur

The first case of combined pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour and neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms are currently thought to originate from distinct progenitor cells that cannot differentiate into each other. We present the first reported case of a combined pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour and neuroendocrine carcinoma in a 58-year-old man who was investigated for abdominal pain and constipation. Imaging revealed a large left upper quadrant mass infiltrating the pancreatic body and tail, splenic hilum, and posterior stomach wall, with five hepatic metastases. This was treated with neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, debulking surgery, and lutetium-177-DO

Neuroendocrine cells associated with neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast: nature and significance.

BACKGROUND: The developmental mechanisms of breast neuroendocrine carcinoma (B-NEC) have not been sufficiently analysed and are not well understood. AIMS: To investigate NE cells in the background tissues surrounding B-NECs. METHODS: Three cases (four breasts) having many NE cells in the background tissues of multifocal B-NECs were identified at the University of Yamanashi Hospital and St Luke's International Hospital, Japan. These patients were, respectively, 28-, 31- and 38-year-old women with no familial history of NE tumour. The totally-resected breasts were serially studied by immunohis

Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia and neuroendocrine carcinoma of the rodent fundic stomach.

Certain substances when given orally to rats have effects on the neuroendocrine cells of the fundic stomach. Such compounds also have effects on acid or its secretion, which is to a greater or lesser extent suppressed, with a consequent rise in serum gastrin, followed by an increase in the number of histamine-secreting ECL cells. These changes are seen with the histamine H2 receptor antagonists loxtidine, SKF 93479, ICI 162,846 and ranitidine; with the hypolipidaemic agents clofibrate, ciprofibrate and benzofibrate; with sodium bicarbonate and pentagastrin; and with omeprazole, a potent inhibi

Colorectal neuroendocrine carcinoma and mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm: Prognostic factors and PD-L1 expression.

Colorectal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN) are rare malignancies with unclear boundaries and poor prognoses. Our study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of these diseases, identify prognostic factors, and explore potential therapeutic targets. We collected and analyzed clinicopathological data of NEC and MiNEN in our hospital from 2011 to 2020. Immunohistochemical staining for PD-L1, BRAF V600E, and mismatch repair proteins was performed. We identified 14 NEC and 7 MiNEN cases. Demographic data, including median overall survival

Incidental Collision Tumor of Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Neuroendocrine Carcinoma.

The composite tumors of the liver are very rare, including the coexistence of HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma) with NEC (neuroendocrine carcinoma). The rare occurrence of these tumors necessitates more reported cases in order to fully understand their clinical characteristics, behaviors and treatments. Herein is described an incidental collision tumor of HCC-NEC, along with a review of the literature focusing on their clinicopathological findings and prognosis. The tumor presented here was found incidentally in the hepatectomy specimen of a 56-year-old man who had undergone liver transplantation
