POU2F3-expressing intraepithelial small-cell carcinoma with mixed small-cell carcinoma and conventional-type urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Based on lineage-specific transcription factors, small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SmCC) of the urinary bladder has recently been subtyped into three molecular subtypes: ASCL1, NEUROD1 and POU2F3. The latter is a master transcriptional regulator of tuft cells (TCs) which are rare solitary cells found in various mucosal epithelia such as the gastrointestinal tract, but which have not been reported in the bladder. The POU2F3 subtype shows low or absent neuroendocrine marker expression. A case of mixed SmCC and conventional-type urothelial carcinoma (CUC) of the urinary bladder with POU2F3-exp

Primary small cell carcinoma of the adrenal gland: Case presentation of a rare extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma.

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is an aggressive histologic subtype of neuroendocrine tumor and is most commonly of bronchogenic origin. However, it can present in an extrapulmonary fashion. Primary extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma (EPSCC) is a rare disease entity, especially within the genitourinary system and furthermore of the adrenal gland. There are scarce case reports that describe management of primary adrenal SCC. We present a case of localized primary adrenal SCC diagnosed on adrenal mass biopsy and successfully treated via neoadjuvant chemotherapy and extirpative surgery.

Sequential Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Small Cell Carcinoma Following Prior Nissen Fundoplication.

Primary small cell carcinoma of the esophagus (PSCCE) is a rare and aggressive malignancy with clinical features that often resemble more common esophageal cancers, leading to delayed diagnosis and uncertainty in management. We present a unique case of sequential squamous cell carcinoma followed by PSCCE in the distal esophagus after a previous Nissen fundoplication, emphasizing diagnostic and surveillance challenges. A 63-year-old man with a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and prior fundoplication presented with chest pain and progressive dysphagia. Initial esophagogastroduo

Combined small cell carcinoma and sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis.

We report here a case of combined small cell carcinoma and sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis. A 61-year-old female presented with right flank discomfort, microhematuria and progressive renal dysfunction. Following diagnosis of right renal pelvic carcinoma, radical nephroureterectomy with lymph node dissection was performed through a midline incision. The tumor was pathologically diagnosed to be combined small cell carcinoma and sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis. The patient had no evidence of recurrence or metastasis, 16 months postoperatively. Small

[Thymic carcinoma (mixed small cell undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma); report of a case].

A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital on October, 1997 with complains of left anterior chest pain. A chest X-ray and computed tomography on admission showed evidence of a mass in the left anterior mediastinum. The patient was treated with combination chemotherapy [cisplatin (CDDP), etoposide (VP-16)] and radiation therapy (2 gray x 25 days), preoperatively. Median sternotomy revealed a tumor invading into the left anterior chest wall, the pericardium, and partial pleura. The tumor was extirpated with combined resection of invaded organs. Microscopically and immunohistochemically, the

Small cell carcinoma esophagus: A rare entity.

Small cell carcinoma of esophagus (SCCE), uncommon and aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis and limited therapeutic consensus, less than 1% of all oesophageal cancers, presents with symptoms of dysphagia and weight loss, leading to diagnosis through endoscopy and histopathological evaluation. This paper presents two case reports of SCCE. Case 1 involves a 70-year-old male with progressive dysphagia, revealing a lobulated mass in mid-esophagus diagnosed as SCCE. Imaging and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, with positive markers for CAM5.2 and Chromogranin, managed through a multidisciplin

[Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium].

The article describes a rare case of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium in a 67-year-old woman. According to the literature, only about 90 such observations have been described worldwide. Histological examination revealed three necessary features: the small-cell nature of the tumor, the presence of epithelial and neuroendocrine markers. An IHC study revealed a positive expression of Syn, Chrom A, CD56, CK AE1/AE3 markers; the proliferative activity index was 70%.

Tonsillar metastasis of small cell lung carcinoma.

Metastasis to palatine tonsils are rare, accounting from only 0.8% of all tonsillar tumors, so far only 100 cases reported in the English literature. Only a few cases have been reported for small cell and non-small cell lung cancer as a primary site. With a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer, a 68-year-old male patient relapsed after six cycles of chemotherapy in tonsilla palatina and cervical lymph nodes. Patients died 26 months after being diagnosed with lung cancer and 2 months after detection of tonsil metastasis. We present the current case report because of the rarity of metastasis to t

Obstructive jaundice in small cell lung carcinoma.

Small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) commonly metastasizes to distant organs. However, metastasis to the pancreas is not a common event. Moreover, obstructive jaundice as a first clinical presentation of SCLC is extremely unusual. This case reports a 51-year-old male with SCLC, manifesting with obstructive jaundice as the initial clinical presentation. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatograghy (ERCP) and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a mass at the head of the pancreas. The patient underwent pancreatoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure). Histopathology revealed a chromogranin- A-p

Primary small cell carcinoma of the vagina.

The primary small cell carcinoma of the vagina is rare, and it is a highly aggressive malignancy with no consensus regarding the treatment of this tumor. The survival rate for patients treated in the early stages is around two years. We related the case report of a patient of 41 years with a vegetative and necrotic lesion in left vaginal wall, in middle and upper third, and involvement of parametrium in its proximal third and medium third. A biopsy showed a small cell undifferentiated carcinoma composed of epithelial cells with round nuclei, oval or elongated, hyperchromatic nuclei, with littl

Combined small cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

We report an extremely rare case of combined small cell carcinoma (combined SmCC) of the hypopharynx. A 73-year-old male presented with multiple left neck swellings for 1 month. A tumorous lesion was found in the left pyriform sinus, and biopsy revealed that the lesion was squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC). Surgery was performed and pathological examination led to a diagnosis as combined SmCC, composed of SqCC and small cell carcinoma (SmCC). One month after surgery, a contrast-CT indicated metastases to the cervical lymph node (LN), mediastinum and liver. We performed 5 courses of chemotherapy w

[Small cell carcinoma of the anal canal].

A 77 year-old male presented a locally advanced small cell anal cancer and simultaneous hepatic and glandular deposits. Due to metastatic disease, chemotherapy with carboplatin and etoposide was the primary choice of treatment. Small cell cancer of the gastrointestinal tract exerts an aggressive clinical course with early metastases and a very poor prognosis. The diagnosis is based on careful histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry. Due to the aggressiveness of this tumor it is of great importance that the pathologist, the oncologist, and the surgeons are aware of this rare type

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (SCCUB) is a rare and aggressive cancer of the bladder. SCCUB is part of neuroendocrine family of tumors that affect several organ systems including respiratory, gastrointestinal and male and female genitourinary tract. SCCUB affect males predominantly with common risk factors include smoking, bladder calculi, bladder manipulation, and chronic cystitis. Prognosis of SCCUB remains poor due to high metastatic potential and lack of symptoms in earlier stages of the disease. Pathogenesis of the disease is linked to loss of genetic material, hypermethylat

Leptomeningeal metastases from small cell lung carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The current study was performed to investigate the frequency of leptomeningeal metastases (LMM) in patients with small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) as well as the effect of LMM on survival, any correlation between the location of the LMM and survival, and a possible increased risk of LMM among patients with brain metastases (BM) located in the posterior fossa. METHODS: Between 1980-2003, 458 consecutive patients with SCLC were enrolled in the current study. Patients underwent regular neurologic examination and imaging of the brain before, during, and after treatment. The diagnosis o
