Dual versus single energy cardiac CT to measure extra cellular volume in cardiac amyloidosis: Correlations with cardiac MRI.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Determine in cardiac amyloid (CA) patients, whether cardiac CT derived extracellular volume (ECV) correlates with that obtained by MRI. Perform this correlation with single (SECT) versus dual energy (DECT) CT and evaluate whether a single sample volume ECV-measure was as reliable as a global (16 segment) assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CA patients who had undergone a clinical cardiac MRI (CMR) were recruited prospectively. SECT and DECT cardiac scans were performed. Three ECG-triggered prospective SECT scans were acquired: non-contrast, arterial-phase contrast and

Effect of COVID-19 on cardiac surgery volumes in Sweden.

Objectives. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which commenced in 2020, is known to frequently cause respiratory failure requiring intensive care, with occasional fatal outcomes. In this study, we aimed to conduct a retrospective nationwide observational study on the influence of the pandemic on cardiac surgery volumes in Sweden. Results. In 2020, 9.4% (n = 539) fewer patients underwent open-heart operations in Sweden (n = 5169) than during 2019 (n = 5708), followed by a 5.8% (n = 302) increase during 2021 (n = 5471). The reduction was greater than 15% in three of the eight hosp

Hemodynamic effects of volume expansion in patients with cardiac tamponade.

BACKGROUND: Volume expansion has been proposed as an alternative treatment for cardiac tamponade; however, the scientific evidence for this recommendation is very poor. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-nine unselected patients (23 males; age 55+/-16 years) with large pericardial effusion and hemodynamic tamponade underwent fluid overload with intravenous administration of 500 mL of normal saline over 10 minutes. Cardiac index and intrapericardial, left ventricular end-diastolic, right atrial, and right ventricular end-diastolic pressures were measured during basal state (tamponade), after fluid ove

Blood volume in cardiac decompensation; determinations by use of radiochromium.

RADIOCHROMIUM HAS THESE ADVANTAGES FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF WHOLE BLOOD VOLUME: it remains in the erythrocytes many hours; it can be measured easily and accurately; the amount of radiation from it is very low.As measured by the radiochromium method, the whole blood volume of normal patients was determined to be 65.6 cc. +/- 5.95 cc. per kilogram of body weight or 2.49 +/- 0.28 liters per square meter of body surface. In a majority of a series of patients with heart disease, hypervolemia was found during right ventricular failure but not in those having left ventricular failure or mitral stenosis

Effects of volume expansion on cardiac output in the preterm infant.

Clinical and echocardiographic haemodynamic evaluations of response to volume expansion are described in 12 preterm neonates aged < 7 days presenting without cardiac dysfunction and with a low cardiac output. They received 10% albumin solution (20 ml kg-1) for 3 h. Measurements were made before infusion, at volumes 5, 12.5 and 20 ml kg-1 and 1 h later. All infants increased significantly their cardiac output (CO) (from a median of 177 to 283 ml kg-1 min-1). The rise of CO decreased with the volume infused. The index of systemic vascular resistance (SVR = ratio of mean arterial pressure to the

Latent Interpolation Learning Using Diffusion Models for Cardiac Volume Reconstruction.

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging is a critical tool for diagnosing and managing cardiovascular disease, yet its utility is often limited by the sparse acquisition of 2D short-axis slices, resulting in incomplete volumetric information. Accurate 3D reconstruction from these sparse slices is essential for comprehensive cardiac assessment, but existing methods face challenges, including reliance on predefined interpolation schemes (e.g., linear or spherical), computational inefficiency, and dependence on additional semantic inputs such as segmentation labels or motion data. To address the

Perioperative circulating blood volume and cardiac function in valve disease.

Circulating blood volume is important in managing fluid balance and cardiac function after surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. Appropriate management differs among the valve disorders, but perioperative blood volume has not yet been considered. From February 2001 to March 2003, perioperative blood volume, fluid balance, cardiac index, and left ventricular stroke work index were measured in 31 patients: 10 with aortic stenosis, 9 with aortic regurgitation, 3 with mitral stenosis, and 9 with mitral regurgitation. All immediate postoperative blood volume measurements were less than preoperative

[Comparison of Doppler echocardiographic methods of determining cardiac minute volume].

In 40 patients without valvular disease, cardiac output was determined by pulsed Doppler echocardiography and thermodilution simultaneously. The sample volume was located in the center of the mitral valve ring, at the tips of the mitral leaflets and in the left ventricular outflow tract, directly proximal to the aortic valve leaflets. Circular cross-sectional areas of the mitral valve ring, aortic ring and bulbus of the aorta were calculated from the M-mode and two dimensional echocardiographic diameters. The mitral orifice was assumed to be an ellipse with varying short axes, determined as th

Piezo1-mediated mechanohydraulic control of cell volume drives cardiac morphogenesis.

Organ morphogenesis is driven by physical forces, yet how mechanical stimuli pattern tissue shape and guide developmental programs remains poorly understood. In zebrafish, endocardial cells (EdCs) within the heart valve-forming region undergo marked volume reduction during early morphogenesis. Here, we uncover a hydraulics-based mechanism by which mechanical forces control EdC volume to direct cardiac development. We show that the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 acts with the calcium-binding protein calmodulin (CaM) and the aquaporin Aqp8a.1 water channel to orchestrate EdC shrinkage. We f

Reducing the prime cardiopulmonary bypass volume during paediatric cardiac surgery.

IntroductionDespite technological advances, the use of homologous blood to prime the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuits of infants under 10 kg remains common. However, such rapid massive transfusion may increase post-CPB morbidity.MethodWe retrospectively included consecutive patients weighing 2.3-10 kg who underwent cardiac surgery under CPB. Patients were divided into two groups based on their priming volumes: low priming volume (LPV) (below the median volume) or high priming volume (HPV) (the median volume or above).ResultsThe study included 208 patients, of whom 104 had priming volumes

Surgically Induced Cardiac Volume Overload by Aortic Regurgitation in Mouse.

Aortic regurgitation (AR) is a common valvular heart disease that exerts volume overload on the heart and represents a global public health problem. Although mice are widely applied to shed light on the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, mouse models of AR, especially those induced by surgery, are still paucity. Here, a mouse model of AR was described in detail which is surgically induced by disruption of the aortic valves under high-resolution echocardiography. In accordance with regurgitated blood flow, AR mouse hearts present a distinctive and clinically relevant volume overload phenotyp

Cardiac platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome induced by a low-volume state.

We present the case of a 85-year-old patient admitted with palpitations and dyspnea. When assuming a recumbent position, we noticed a significant improvement in dyspnea, as well as a rise in arterial oxygen saturation. This is a typical presentation of platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome (POS). The diagnosis was confirmed by serial analyses of the arterial oxygen saturation in different positions. In our patient, POS was caused by a cardiac right-left shunt through a patent foramen ovale, facilitated by an atrial septal aneurysm, a dilated aortic root and a large Eustachian valve. A low-volume stat

Ventricular volume growth after cardiac transplantation in infants and children.

BACKGROUND: Intermediate-term survival after pediatric cardiac transplantation continues to improve. However, little is known about cardiac function and especially ventricular growth in young patients after cardiac transplantation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate serially the hemodynamics, left ventricular (LV) volume, and ventricular function after cardiac transplantation in infants and children. METHODS AND RESULTS: Indications for cardiac transplantation were dilated cardiomyopathy (eight patients), hypoplastic left heart syndrome (six patients), and postoperative structural cong

The Importance of Mitral Valve Prolapse Doming Volume in the Assessment of Left Ventricular Stroke Volume with Cardiac MRI.

There remains a debate whether the ventricular volume within prolapsing mitral valve (MV) leaflets should be included in the left ventricular (LV) end-systolic volume, and therefore factored in LV stroke volume (SV), in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) assessments. This study aims to compare LV volumes during end-systolic phases, with and without the inclusion of the volume of blood on the left atrial aspect of the atrioventricular groove but still within the MV prolapsing leaflets, against the reference LV SV by four-dimensional flow (4DF). A total of 15 patients with MV prolapse (MVP) were r

Synthetic Extracellular Volume in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Without Blood Sampling: a Reliable Tool to Replace Conventional Extracellular Volume.

BACKGROUND: The calculation of extracellular volume (ECV) in cardiac magnetic resonance requires hematocrit, limiting its applicability in clinical practice. Based on the linear relationship between hematocrit and blood T1 relaxivity, a synthetic ECV could be estimated without a blood sample. We aim to develop and test regression models for synthetic ECV without blood sampling in 1.5-T and 3.0-T scanners. METHODS: A total of 1101 subjects who underwent cardiac magnetic resonance scanning with native and postcontrast T1 mapping and venous hematocrit within 24 hours were retrospectively enrolle

Long-term bed rest-induced reductions in stroke volume during rest and exercise: cardiac dysfunction vs. volume depletion.

Long-term head-down-tilt bed rest (HDT) causes cardiovascular deconditioning, attributed to reflex dysfunctions, plasma volume reduction, or cardiac impairments. Our objective with the present study was to evaluate the functional importance and relative contribution of these during rest and exercise in supine and upright postures. We studied six subjects before (baseline), during [days 60 (D60) and 113 (D113)], and after [recovery days 0 (R0), 3 (R3), and 15 (R15)] 120 days of -6 degrees HDT. We determined cardiac output, stroke volume (SV), mean arterial pressure, and heart rate during rest a

Relationship between cardiac index and brain volume in the UK Biobank.

AIMS: Although cardiac function is associated with cognitive impairment in end-stage heart disease, the links between cardiac function and brain structure remain unclear. We aimed to examine the association between cardiac index (CI) (a measure of cardiac output adjusting for body surface area) and brain volumes in mid-to later life and how these are affected by age, sex and cardiometabolic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We utilized brain and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from a population-based cohort of people in the UK Biobank (a United Kingdom population-based cohort of p

Center Volume and Failure to Rescue in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: Is There a Relationship?

BACKGROUND: Failure to rescue (FTR) is a validated quality metric for evaluating outcomes in pediatric cardiac surgery. Using a national administrative database, we sought to assess the relationship between annual hospital case volume and FTR. METHODS: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) cases were extracted from the Kids' Inpatient Database for 2016 and 2019. FTR was defined as inpatient mortality of patients with at least 1 postoperative complication. Hospitals were divided into high-, mid-, and low-volume hospitals on the basis of annual CPB case volume terciles. A mixed effects multivariable log

Machine learning in the prediction of cardiac epicardial and mediastinal fat volumes.

We propose a methodology to predict the cardiac epicardial and mediastinal fat volumes in computed tomography images using regression algorithms. The obtained results indicate that it is feasible to predict these fats with a high degree of correlation, thus alleviating the requirement for manual or automatic segmentation of both fat volumes. Instead, segmenting just one of them suffices, while the volume of the other may be predicted fairly precisely. The correlation coefficient obtained by the Rotation Forest algorithm using MLP Regressor for predicting the mediastinal fat based on the epicar
