Cardiorespiratory Fitness Attenuates the Influence of Amyloid on Cognition.

The aim of this study was to examine cross-sectionally whether higher cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) might favorably modify amyloid-β (Aβ)-related decrements in cognition in a cohort of late-middle-aged adults at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Sixty-nine enrollees in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention participated in this study. They completed a comprehensive neuropsychological exam, underwent 11C Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB)-PET imaging, and performed a graded treadmill exercise test to volitional exhaustion. Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) during the exercise test was us

Target heart rates for the development of cardiorespiratory fitness.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends the use of 40%, 60%, 80%, and 85% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) as target values in developing exercise prescriptions. Further, the ACSM states that 55%, 70%, 85%, and 90% of maximal heart rate (HRmax) may be used as indices of these respective levels of % VO2max for the general population. The current study evaluated this relationship between %HRmax and %VO2max in apparently healthy, young adults. Eighty-one men and 81 women between the ages of 18 and 34 engaged in an incremental exercise test to exhaustion. Linear regressions

Body Composition, Obesity, and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in the Community.

PURPOSE: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is an integrative measure of physiologic health, but how CRF relates to different body composition components and cardiometabolic health in community-dwelling adults remains uncertain, especially in obesity. METHODS: In Framingham Heart Study (FHS) Generation 3/Omni-2 participants, body composition measures from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were related to peak oxygen uptake (VO2) and complementary exercise phenotypes assessed via cardiopulmonary exercise testing in sex-stratified multivariable linear models. Secondary analyses examined corre

The critical role of cardiorespiratory fitness in disease prevention.

Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) has been increasingly recognized in recent years as an important predictor of risk for adverse outcomes in numerous chronic conditions. In fact, a growing body of epidemiological and clinical evidence demonstrates that CRF is a potentially stronger predictor of mortality than established risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, adding CRF to these traditional risk factors significantly improves the reclassification of risk for adverse outcomes. The utility of CRF now extends far beyond all-cause and cardiovascula

Impact of cardiorespiratory fitness on outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) significantly improves outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially coronary heart disease and heart failure (HF). Although CR is often considered as an exercise training (ET) program for patients following CVD events, CR is more than just ET as it involves education, dietary and psychological counseling, as well as a multi-factorial risk factor modification. However, a major component of ET involves efforts to measure and improve levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). In this state-of-the-art review, we analyze the data, including

Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Inflammation, and the Incident Risk of Pneumonia.

INTRODUCTION: Both inflammation and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are associated with the risk of respiratory infections. To clarify the hypothesis that CRF attenuates the incident risk of pneumonia due to inflammation, we conducted a prospective study examining the independent and joint associations of inflammation and CRF on the risk of pneumonia in a population sample of 2041 middle-aged men. METHODS: Cardiorespiratory fitness was directly measured as peak oxygen uptake (V˙o2peak) during progressive exercise testing to volitional fatigue, and categorized into tertiles. Inflammation was d

Trajectories of cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with juvenile dermatomyositis.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research demonstrated decreased cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in patients with JDM during active disease and remission. However, longitudinal data regarding trajectories of CRF are currently lacking. The objective of this study was to determine trajectories of CRF in patients with both monocyclic and chronic JDM, and to identify potential predictors of these trajectories. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with JDM [median age (interquartile range) at diagnosis: 8.3 (6.3-15.4) years] treated in our paediatric rheumatology outpatient clinic were included. All patients performe

Cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, and vasomotor symptoms of menopause.

OBJECTIVES: Vasomotor symptoms of menopause (VMS) are purportedly linked to cardio-autonomic dysfunction. Higher cardiorespiratory fitness and moderate-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) protect against cardio-autonomic dysfunction and might protect against VMS. Our purpose was to determine associations of fitness and MVPA with severe VMS (sVMS). METHODS: CARDIA participants with evidence of menopause transition by the year 30 examination (Y30) who completed a baseline fitness test and attended the Y30 examination were included. MVPA was determined with accelerometry at Y20. sVMS wer

Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Population Attributable Risk: The ETHOS Study.

BACKGROUND: Low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and traditional cardiovascular risk factors are associated with mortality, but their relative contributions to mortality and the independent association of CRF remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We analyzed a large Veterans Administration cohort undergoing maximal exercise testing (n=580,290; mean age 65.1±9.7 years) and followed them for 10.2±5.1 years. Relative risks (RRs) for mortality were estimated using Poisson regression with robust (HC3) standard errors across nested models adjusting sequentially for age, sex, BMI, diabetes, smokin

Cardiorespiratory fitness, body mass index and heart failure incidence.

AIMS: Obesity is associated with increased risk of heart failure (HF). This risk may be modulated by improved cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) as CRF is associated with favourable health outcomes. Thus, we assessed the interaction between body mass index (BMI), CRF and HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cardiorespiratory fitness and BMI were assessed in 20 254 US male veterans (mean age 58.0 ± 11.3 years), who completed a maximal exercise treadmill test between 1987 and 2017. All had no evidence of ischaemia or HF prior to the exercise test. They were classified based on age-stratified quartiles of peak

The association between cardiorespiratory fitness and pulmonary diffusing capacity.

Pulmonary diffusing capacity for nitric oxide (DL,NO) and carbon monoxide (DL,CO) measured at rest (mL/min/mmHg) is strongly associated with aerobic capacity (cardiorespiratory fitness or peak oxygen uptake, VO2peak) measured in L/min. Data from healthy, non-obese individuals from various studies (n=121 males and 81 females) were combined to examine this association. Subjects that were above the upper limit of normal (ULN, 97.5th percentile for age and sex and height) for DL,NO and DLCO had a higher median VO2peak compared to subjects below the ULN (Above the ULN=4.2-4.5L/min or 54-56mL/kg/min

Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Atherosclerosis: Recent Data and Future Directions.

Historically, the relationship between exercise and the cardiovascular system was viewed as unidirectional, with a disease resulting in exercise limitation and hazard. This article reviews and explores the bidirectional nature, delineating the effects, generally positive, on the cardiovascular system and atherosclerosis. Exercise augments eNOS, affects redox potential, and favorably affects mediators of atherosclerosis including lipids, glucose homeostasis, and inflammation. There are direct effects on the vasculature as well as indirect benefits related to exercise-induced changes in body com

Cardiorespiratory fitness, obesity, and functional limitation in older adults.

One hundred forty-six abdominally obese adults age 60-80 yr were studied to investigate the interaction between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and obesity on functional limitation. Obesity was determined by fat mass (FM), CRF was determined by a maximal treadmill test, and functional limitation was based on 4 different tasks that are predictive of subsequent disability. Both FM (r = -.34, p ≤ .01) and CRF (r = .54, p ≤ .01) were independently associated with functional limitation in bivariate analysis. After further control for sex, age, and the interaction term (CRF × FM), FM was no longer in

Epigenetic age deceleration reflects exercise-induced cardiorespiratory fitness improvements.

Epigenetic clocks are emerging as promising biomarkers of biological aging, yet their sensitivity to short-term interventions remains unclear. This pilot study investigates whether the GrimAge clock can capture the effects of a 6-month cycling-based endurance exercise training intervention, with cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2 max) and body composition as primary outcomes. We enrolled 42 adults aged 35-65, of whom 38 completed the study and 33 adhered to the protocol (> 66% adherence). Participants demonstrated significant improvements in VO2 max (+ 20%, P < 0.001) and body composition (P < 0.0

Estimation of Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Military Applicants Using Seismocardiography.

INTRODUCTION: A run test is used in the assessment of physical fitness in military applicants. Seismocardiography is a fast, non-invasive method for estimation of cardiorespiratory fitness which could replace conventional run tests. We aimed to assess the association between distance covered at a 12-minute run test and estimated maximum oxygen uptake using seismocardiography. We hypothesized was that there was a significant correlation between the distance measured at a 12-minute run test and the estimated maximum oxygen uptake determined by seismocardiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We inclu

The Diminished Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The American Heart Association has recently emphasized the significance of the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. However, the cumulative impact of these factors on cardiorespiratory fitness remains inadequately characterized. This study aimed to examine the responses observed during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) of CKM syndrome patients and explore the potential correlation between cardiorespiratory fitness and hemoglobin concentration in this cohort. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We retrospectively collected medical data of 8206 patients who unde

Young users of electronic cigarettes exhibit reduced cardiorespiratory fitness.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems, often referred to as e-cigarettes, are popular tobacco products frequently advertised as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes despite preliminary data suggesting a potential negative cardiovascular impact. Cardiorespiratory fitness is a critical cardiovascular health marker that is diminished in individuals who consume traditional tobacco products. Whether the use of e-cigarettes impacts cardiorespiratory fitness is currently unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of regular e-cigarette use on cardiorespiratory fitne
