Cardiovascular alterations and night shift work disorder in nurses: a systematic review.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are among the top causes of morbidity and mortality among Mexican adults. Night shift work disorder (NSWD) has been reported as a possible risk factor for CVD. The objective of this review was to determine whether there is an association between CVD and NSWD in nurses. We performed a systematic review of these variables in PubMed. Of 68 original research articles addressing CVD and NSWD in nurses, four found an association between CVD and NSWD. A possible association between these variables was documented, supported by the alteration of wake/sleep circadian cycles

Nurse-led cardiovascular disease risk management intervention for patients with gout.

BACKGROUND: Patients with gout are at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and this risk is frequently under-managed. AIMS: To evaluate a nurse-led multidisciplinary approach to improve CVD risk management in patients with gout. METHODS: Patients referred to rheumatology clinics for gout management received a structured nurse-led CVD risk assessment. For the patients with an initial 5 year risk >10%, interventions for CVD prevention were identified and goals developed. These patients were then reassessed approximately 6 months later to determine changes in CVD risk management and prof

Fall risk and cardiovascular outcomes of first-line antihypertensive medications in nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence exists about the comparative effects of first-line antihypertensive medications (i.e., renin-angiotensin-aldosterone converting enzyme inhibitors (RAASi), amlodipine, or thiazide diuretics) in older adults with limited life expectancy. We compared the rates of injurious falls and short-term cardiovascular events between different first-line antihypertensive medication classes in adults receiving care in nursing homes (NH). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries receiving care in NHs. Patients newly dispensed first-line an
