[Biotelemetry in anesthesia and intensive care (author's transl)].

Biotelemetry and patient monitoring are two fields closely related, and should contribute to the contiuous measurement of physiological parameters from patients with little impediment. In anesthesia the requirement of minimal impediment is less important. Here wireless transmission has two advantages of great importance, namely: minimization of the risk of electricl shock by the incorporation of batteries and a complete separation of the patient and the recording equipment, and the possibility of connecting the patient to the measuring equipment before transporting him into the operating theat

[Behavior of the cardiovascular system in outer space].

One of the important factors in outer space is the absence of gravity (OG). During longterm missions, this factor is responsible for the larger number of anatomical and physiological changes that astronauts experience. The cardiovascular system undergoes these changes with severe intensity, which is part of an adaptation process to the new environmental conditions. The modifications observed in both the anatomy of the cardiovascular system and its hemodynamics occur in two phases. The first phase begins when the astronauts enter into Earth orbit or in interplanetary trajectory and extends unti

Benefits and risks of sauna bathing.

Although sauna bathing causes various acute, transient cardiovascular and hormonal changes, it is well tolerated by most healthy adults and children. Sauna bathing does not influence fertility and is safe during the uncomplicated pregnancies of healthy women. Some studies have suggested that long-term sauna bathing may help lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension and improve the left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with chronic congestive heart failure, but additional data are needed to confirm these findings. The transient improvements in pulmonary function that occur in

The vascular biological stereotype and the achievement problem of the neurohumoral integration during phylogenesis.

There is developed Bertalanffy's theory of systems on the evolution process of biological stereotypes (theory of Mârza, Repciuc, Eskenasy 1962) and the systemic theory nomenclature used in biology is critically discussed. A more complete definition of the reactivity is attempted. Biological stereotypes are analogous to the Pavlovian absolute reflexes and represent specialized and integrated parts of the reactivity, which forms a unity of contraries with the metabolism. There is considered that a biological stereotypes achieves to form a system when the specific organ is differentiated. On this

[Physiological changes in microgravity].

Microgravity affects the different organ systems to various degrees. In particular, a thoracocephalic fluid shift occurs through suppression of the hydrostatic gradient. Sensory conflict leads to space motion sickness, which is frequent early in the flight, and the musculo-skeletal system is perturbed by the lack of stimuli. The respiratory system seems to be less affected. These changes do not seem to impair health or performance. Humans seem able to adapt to long-term exposure to microgravity, but disorders can occur on return to Earth. In-flight preventive measures need be developed.

The biological effect of endogenous sulfur dioxide in the cardiovascular system.

Sulfur dioxide is considered a toxic gas in air pollution and detrimental to many organs, however, it can be generated endogenously in the cardiovascular system in vivo. Gaseous sulfur dioxide has an endothelium-dependent vasorelaxing effect at low concentrations, but is endothelium-independent at high concentrations and has a negative inotropic effect on cardiac function. This vasorelaxing effect is mediated by adenosine triphosphate-sensitive calcium channels and L-type calcium channels. Under pathophysiological conditions, sulfur dioxide increases anti-inflammatory response and antioxidant

Age-related physiological changes and their clinical significance.

Physiological changes occur with aging in all organ systems. The cardiac output decreases, blood pressure increases and arteriosclerosis develops. The lungs show impaired gas exchange, a decrease in vital capacity and slower expiratory flow rates. The creatinine clearance decreases with age although the serum creatinine level remains relatively constant due to a proportionate age-related decrease in creatinine production. Functional changes, largely related to altered motility patterns, occur in the gastrointestinal system with senescence, and atrophic gastritis and altered hepatic drug metabo

Breathing patterns and associated cardiovascular changes in intermittently breathing animals: (Partially) correcting a semantic quagmire.

Many animal species do not breathe in a continuous, rhythmic fashion, but rather display a variety of breathing patterns characterized by prolonged periods between breaths (inter-breath intervals), during which the heart continues to beat. Examples of intermittent breathing abound across the animal kingdom, from crustaceans to cetaceans. With respect to human physiology, intermittent breathing-also termed 'periodic' or 'episodic' breathing-is associated with a variety of pathologies. Cardiovascular phenomena associated with intermittent breathing in diving species have been termed 'diving brad

Prolonged stress-related cardiovascular activation: Is there any?

BACKGROUND: Prolonged physiological activation before or after stressors has gained recognition as a decisive element in theories that explain the link between stress and disease, specifically cardiovascular (CV) disease. This view is opposed to the conventional reactivity hypothesis that emphasizes responses during stressors. PURPOSE: Prolonged activity has not often been an explicit research goal of real-life stress studies. Nevertheless, a growing number of these studies have provided evidence for prolonged activity, often as a secondary research goal. METHODS: An overview of this evidenc

Cardiovascular physiology. Effects of microgravity.

Experiments during spaceflight and its groundbase analog, bedrest, provide consistent data which demonstrate that numerous changes in cardiovascular function occur as part of the physiological adaptation process to the microgravity environment. These include elevated heart rate and venous compliance, lowered blood volume, central venous pressure and stroke volume, and attenuated autonomic reflex functions. Although most of these adaptations are not functionally apparent during microgravity exposure, they manifest themselves during the return to the gravitational challenge of earth's terrestria

Hypno-cardiac physiology: Aiming for an organised study of the physiological effects of hypnosis on the cardiovascular system.

Hypnosis is a promising tool in the management of various conditions, such as anxiety and chronic pain. Preliminary studies have shown that hypnosis can directly affect the cardiovascular system, as it increases parasympathetic activation and reduces sympathetic activity. However, the literature related to the effects of hypnosis on cardiovascular health is scarce, mainly due to misconceptions about hypnosis among researchers and medical professionals. This opinion paper examines the role that hypnosis may play in cardiovascular health, highlighting the physiological mechanisms behind it. The

Role of hydrogen sulfide in cardiovascular ageing.

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western society and ageing is a relevant non-modifiable risk factor. Morphological and functional alterations at endothelial level represent first events of ageing, inevitably followed by vascular dysfunction and consequent atherosclerosis that deeply influences cardiovascular health. Indeed, myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis typically occur and contribute to compromise overall cardiac output. As regards the intracellular molecular mechanisms involved in the cardiovascular ageing, an intricate network is emerging, r

TRPM4 channels in the cardiovascular system.

The non-selective Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 4 (TRPM4) cation channel is abundantly expressed in cardiac cells, being involved in several aspects of cardiac rhythmicity, including cardiac conduction, pace making and action-potential repolarization. Dominantly inherited mutations in the TRPM4 gene are associated with the cardiac bundle-branch disorder progressive familial heart block type I (PFHBI) and isolated cardiac conduction disease (ICCD) giving rise to atrio-ventricular conduction block (AVB), right bundle branch block, bradycardia, and the Brugada syndrome. The mutant pheno

[Aldosterone as an endogenous cardiovascular toxin and the options for its therapeutic management].

In physiological, as well as pathological situations, aldosterone significantly influences volume, pressure and electrolyte balance. Primary hyperaldosteronism is caused by autonomous over-production, most frequently due to adrenal adenoma. Patients with primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome) have more pronounced left ventricular hypertrophy and higher frequency of cardiovascular events than patients with essential hypertension (EH) with comparable blood pressure values. Consequently, there is an increased interest in the role ofaldosterone tissue function in cardiovascular disease. The

Social support and cardiovascular reactivity.

Recent experimental work on the benefits of social support in buffering cardiovascular stress responses builds on prior epidemiological, psychological, and physiological work. Epidemiological data show that social integration is associated with better health, but cannot unambiguously establish causality (it could be that healthy people attract more friends), nor that the mechanism is psychological (the mechanism could be behavioral; for example, with friends encouraging exercise). Social psychological work suggests that people prefer to be with others, especially in times of stress, and that t

A systematic mapping review of studies reporting the effects of spaceflight on cardiovascular outcomes.

This systematic review aimed to characterize the landscape of cardiovascular research in the context of spaceflight and its Earth-based analogs. In collaboration with subject matter experts from the Ames Life Science Data Archive Analysis Working Group, we developed targeted search terms for spaceflight-related exposures and specific cardiovascular outcomes. A team of librarians translated these terms into structured search strategies across Ovid Medline, Embase, and CINAHL, yielding 18,837 records after deduplication. Screening was completed in collaboration with citizen scientists from the S
