Understanding career choices of young medical professionals in Bangladesh: a mixed-methods study.

The health workforce in Bangladesh is undergoing demographic and structural changes, including increasing feminization and imbalances in specialty distribution. Understanding career choices among young doctors is important for workforce planning. A concurrent mixed-methods study was conducted in 2023 among 159 young medical professionals. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, whereas qualitative data from interviews were analysed thematically. The findings from both components were integrated through triangulation, and an ecological model of career progr

Late-career nurses matter: A discrete choice experiment to elicit preferences to delay retirement.

BACKGROUND: In England, disproportionate numbers of registered nurses leave the National Health Service (NHS) early as they approach retirement age. Extending the working lives of late-career nurses - those aged 55 years and over - would retain valuable experience. Research is needed to understand the job preferences of late-career NHS nurses to inform the development of tailored retention policies. AIMS: To identify the job characteristics associated with late-career NHS nurses' retirement decisions and to estimate trade-offs among these characteristics using a Discrete Choice Experiment. D

U.S. medical students choice of careers and its future impact on health care manpower.

During the last 10-15 years, the health care system of this country has faced major challenges, among them, spiraling increases of health care costs, physician manpower maldistribution, excessive production of subspecialists, shortages of primary care physicians (family practice, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics), and lack of access to health care, predominantly among the poor and disadvantaged populations. As a way of shedding light on some of these challenges, the authors conducted a study among junior medical students from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston w

How is increased selectivity of medical school admissions associated with physicians' career choice? A Japanese experience.

BACKGROUND: During the long-lasting economic stagnation, the popularity of medical school has dramatically increased among pre-medical students in Japan. This is primarily due to the belief that medicine is generally a recession-proof career. As a result, pre-medical students today who want to enter medical school have to pass a more rigorous entrance examination than that in the 1980s. This paper explores the association between the selectivity of medical school admissions and graduates' later career choices. METHODS: A unique continuous measure of the selectivity of medical school admission
