Evolutionary loss of inflammasomes in the Carnivora and implications for the carriage of zoonotic infections.

Zoonotic pathogens, such as COVID-19, reside in animal hosts before jumping species to infect humans. The Carnivora, like mink, carry many zoonoses, yet how diversity in host immune genes across species affect pathogen carriage is poorly understood. Here, we describe a progressive evolutionary downregulation of pathogen-sensing inflammasome pathways in Carnivora. This includes the loss of nucleotide-oligomerization domain leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs), acquisition of a unique caspase-1/-4 effector fusion protein that processes gasdermin D pore formation without inducing rapid lytic cell

Differential scaling of the long bones in the terrestrial carnivora and other mammals.

We measured the lengths and diameters of four long bones from 118 terrestrial carnivoran species using museum specimens. Though intrafamilial regressions scaled linearly, nearly all intraordinal regressions scaled non-linearly. The observed non-linear scaling of bone dimensions within this order results from a systematic decrease in intrafamilial allometric slope with increasing body size. A change in limb posture (more upright in larger species) to maintain similar peak bone stresses may allow the nearly isometric scaling of skeletal dimensions observed in smaller sized mammals (below about 1

Common scents? A review of potentially shared chemical signals in the order Carnivora.

Many animals transmit information in the form of chemical signals to modify behavior or induce physiological change in receivers. For some taxa, such as species in the order Carnivora, chemical signals are known to provide a critical mode of communication, although they are still poorly understood compared to other signal modalities. Here, we review the literature to identify and categorize potential chemical signals within the Carnivora with a view to determining commonalities based on sex, taxon, and function. Data were drawn from 112 publications, dating from 1896 to 2021. Of the 1,532 disc

Ultrastructure of the parotid and submandibular glands of the Old World Marten (Carnivora; Mustelidae).

The morphology of the parotid and submandibular glands in the marten, a carnivore, were studied and analyzed under a transmission electron microscope. The nature of the granules in both glands, as well as in the acini and in the secretory tubules, is rather mucous. The structure of the secretory tubules is very characteristic, especially the striated ones. The myoepithelial cells are close to the acini and tubules and covered by the basement membrane separating them from the connective tissue, which enhances its epithelial origin. The cytoplasm of the basal parts of the acinar and tubular cell

A rare case of ectopic dioctophymosis in Leopardus pardalis (Carnivora, Felidae) in Paraguay.

An adult female Leopardus pardalis from Jardín Botánico y Zoológico de Asunción, Paraguay was brought in from the wild, and inspected for a parasitic structure attached to the vulva. The parasite was removed and was identified as a Dioctophyme renale female. Blood samples and ultrasound did not show abnormalities in any organ, confirming the ectopic presentation of the parasite. This is the first report of D. renale in the L. pardalis and a first time for ectopic location in vagina and spontaneous elimination in a felid.

Molecular evidence of Babesia species in Procyon cancrivorus (Carnivora, Procyonidae) in Uruguay.

The crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) is a carnivore widely distributed from southern Central America to all South American countries except Chile. In the Southern cone of America, P. cancrivorus has been found parasitized by several Amblyomma spp. Particularly, in Uruguay, A. aureolatum is the only tick found in this wild carnivore. Piroplasmid hemoparasites were found in Procyon lotor from North America and Japan. In this work, molecular evidence Babesia sp. DNA was found in blood and tissues from road-killed P. cancrivorus from different locations in Uruguay. PCRs targeting 18S rRNA

Cheetah Acinonyx pardinensis (Felidae, Carnivora) from the Early Pleistocene of Crimea (Taurida Cave).

A mandible fragment of Acinonyx pardinensis (Croizet et Jobert, 1828) is described from the Early Pleistocene locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea, Late Villafranchian, about 1.8-1.5 Ma). This is the first discovery of the genus Acinonyx in the Pleistocene of Crimea. Along with other felids, such as Homotherium, Megantereon, Panthera, Lynx, and Puma, cheetahs were typical representatives of the Late Villafranchian faunas of Eurasia. In the Taurida locality, Acinonyx pardinensis is co-occurred with Homotherium crenatidens, Megantereon adroveri, and Lynx issiodorensis.

The late Neopleistocene dhole (Carnivora, Canidae, Cuon alpinus Pallas, 1811) from the Urals.

Morphotypic and morphometric analyses of the M2 tooth found in the Late Pleistocene deposits of the Ignatievskaya Cave (southern Urals) demonstrate that this tooth belongs to the dhole (Cuon alpinus Pallas, 1811). This is the first reliable evidence for the presence of the dhole in the Urals. Radiocarbon dating and associated theriofauna allow the tooth to be dated to the first half of the late Neopleistocene or, more precisely, to marine isotope stages (MISs) 3 and 4.

Quantitative assessment of masticatory muscles based on skull muscle attachment areas in Carnivora.

Masticatory muscles are composed of the temporalis, masseter, and pterygoid muscles in mammals. Each muscle has a different origin on the skull and insertion on the mandible; thus, all masticatory muscles contract in different directions. Collecting in vivo data and directly measuring the masticatory muscles anatomically in various Carnivora species is practically problematic. This is because some carnivorans can be ferocious, rare, or even extinct. Consequently, the most practical method to collect data on the force generated by the masticatory muscle is to estimate the force based on skulls.

First report of Sarcoptes scabiei parasitism (Sarcoptiformes: Sarcoptidae) in Lycalopes sechurae (Mammalia: Carnivora).

We present the first report of parasitism by Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus, 1758), in a sechuran fox "Lycalopex sechurae". Sarcoptes scabiei is a mite that produces sarcoptic mange, which can lead to the death of the animal host and can cause epidemic episodes in wildlife communities. The sechuran fox was collected by the environmental police from a citizen who reported the animal. It was sent to a veterinarian specializing in wildlife, "Clinica Mansion Mascota", in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Immediate physical examination showed crusts on its skin, and samples of skin and blood were collected and anal

Late Pleistocene carnivores (Carnivora: Mammalia) from a cave sedimentary deposit in northern Brazil.

The Brazilian Quaternary terrestrial Carnivora are represented by the following families: Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae, Procyonidae Mephitidae and Mustelidae. Their recent evolutionary history in South America is associated with the uplift of the Panamanian Isthmus, and which enabled the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Here we present new fossil records of Carnivora found in a cave in Aurora do Tocantins, Tocantins, northern Brazil. A stratigraphical controlled collection in the sedimentary deposit of the studied cave revealed a fossiliferous level where the following Carnivora taxa wer

Mechanical function of the unique alveolar torus in the sabretooth Nimravus brachyops (Nimravidae, Carnivora).

Sabretoothed mammals exemplify some of the most extreme craniodental morphological specializations in vertebrates. Much attention has been devoted to their elongated upper canines; however, not all sabretooths possess the same complex of morphological characteristics associated with sabres, making generalization of the requirements for specialized jaw function difficult. Here, we test the approximately 150-year-old hypothesis that a unique jaw torus seen in a single sabretooth genus, Nimravus, is an adaptation to resist biting forces. We tested a suite of biting scenarios using finite element

A permanent host shift of rabies virus from Chiroptera to Carnivora associated with recombination.

Bat virus host shifts can result in the spread of diseases with significant effects. The rabies virus (RABV) is able to infect almost all mammals and is therefore a useful model for the study of host shift mechanisms. Carnivore RABVs originated from two historical host shifts from bat viruses. To reveal the genetic pathways by which bat RABVs changed their host tropism from bats to carnivores, we investigated the second permanent bat-to-carnivore shift resulting in two carnivore variants, known as raccoon RABV (RRV) and south-central skunk RABV (SCSKV). We found that their glycoprotein (G) gen

Cranial Findings of Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Hyaenidae, Carnivora) from the Taurida Cave (Crimea, Early Pleistocene).

Cranial materials of the large hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Gervais, 1850) from the Early Pleistocene (~1.8-1.6 Ma) locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea) belong to individuals of different individual ages, from juvenile to senile. The relative facial length of the "short-faced hyena" P. brevirostris has been shown to be greater than that of the recent spotted hyena Crocuta сrocuta (Erxleben, 1777). As P. brevirostris matured, the facial and frontal regions increased significantly in height, and the dorsal profile line of the skull elevated noticeably. New material on P. brevirostris is of

Mellivora indosinica sp. nov. (Mustelidae, Carnivora): a Honey Badger from the Pleistocene of Vietnam.

A new honey badger, Mellivora indosinica sp. nov., is described on the basis of an isolated lower carnassial tooth from the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Tham Hai cave in Northeast Vietnam (Lang Son Province). Judging by tooth measurements, the new species is larger than all known Mellivorini, including the medium-sized Recent Mellivora capensis, but much smaller than the Neogene giant Eomellivorini. This is the only representative of Mellivorinae in Southeast Asia and evidence for the presence of honey badgers in the Pleistocene Stegodon-Ailuropoda fauna.

HELMINTH EGGS FROM PACHYCROCUTA BREVIROSTRIS (CARNIVORA, HYAENIDAE) COPROLITES FROM TAURIDA CAVE (EARLY PLEISTOCENE, CRIMEA).

Twenty-seven Pachycrocuta brevirostris coprolites from Taurida Cave (Early Pleistocene) were studied. Eggs of parasitic worms were found in 6 of them (22.2%). Eggs of Trematoda species were identified among them, as were eggs of Taenia, Toxocara, and Capillaria. Toxocara eggs were the most common; they were found in 15% of the coprolites. This is the earliest evidence of P. brevirostris infection by these groups of helminths.

Etruscan Wolf Canis etruscus (Canidae, Carnivora) from the Early Pleistocene of Crimea (Taurida Cave).

The cranial and mandibular fragments of the medium-sized canid from the Early Pleistocene locality of Taurida cave (about 1.8-1.5 Ma) in Crimea are described and included in the hypodigm of the species Canis etruscus Forsyth Major, 1877, a common member of the Late Villafranchian fauna of the Circum-Mediterranean region. This species is reported for the first time from the Northern Black Sea region. The discovered evidence reinforce previous published idea regarding the periodically use of the Taurida cave by canids and other large predators as a den and shelter.

Helminths of small carnivores (Mammalia: Carnivora) from a Tropical Dry Forest in the Colombian Caribbean.

Among the least explored yet highly relevant aspects of wildlife health are host-endoparasite interactions, particularly those involving helminths with zoonotic potential. Carnivores are known reservoirs of several such parasites. This study investigates the diversity of gastrointestinal helminths in small carnivores (Mammalia: Carnivora) inhabiting a tropical dry forest ecosystem in the Colombian Caribbean. A total of 60 fecal samples were collected from five species-Cerdocyon thous, Leopardus pardalis, Procyon spp., Eira barbara, and Puma yagouaroundi-within the Sanguaré Natural Reserve (Suc
