Biologic poisons for pain.

Pain therapies from natural sources date back thousands of years to the use of plant and animal extracts for a variety of painful conditions and injuries. We certainly are all familiar with modern uses of plant-derived analgesic compounds such as opium derivatives from papaverum somniferum and salicylates from willow bark (Salix species). Local anesthetics were isolated from coca leaves in the late 1800s. Sarapin, derived from carnivorous pitcher plants, has been injected for regional analgesia in human and veterinary medicine, but efficacy is controversial. Biologic organisms can play importa

Feed intake and gene expression of appetite-regulating hormones in Salminus brasiliensis fed diets containing soy protein concentrate.

Dourado (Salminus brasiliensis) is a large carnivorous fish with high commercial value for which sustainable aquaculture relies on the substitution of expensive dietary animal protein sources in aquafeeds, in particular fish meal (FM), by cheaper plant protein, such as soy protein concentrate (SPC). This study aimed at evaluating feed intake and gene expression of appetite- regulating hormones [orexin, cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript (CART), leptin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and peptide YY (PYY)] in the intestine, pyloric caeca and hypothalamus of juvenile dourado fed diets containing

Dietary Fermented Mulberry Leaf Triggers Dose-Dependent Changes in Growth, Antioxidant Immune Status and Intestinal Microecology of Amur Sturgeon (Acipenser schrenckii).

Mulberry leaf is a promising sustainable plant-based feed resource; however, high dietary inclusion of raw mulberry leaf impairs growth in carnivorous fish. Fermentation degrades anti-nutritional components and enhances nutrient availability, yet the dose-dependent effects and underlying mechanisms of fermented mulberry leaf (FML) in Acipenser schrenckii remain unclear. This study assessed graded dietary FML inclusion (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) as a partial replacement for fishmeal in Amur sturgeon, measuring growth performance, intestinal morphology, serum biochemistry, target gene expression, gut

Ultra-fast underwater suction traps.

Carnivorous aquatic Utricularia species catch small prey animals using millimetre-sized underwater suction traps, which have fascinated scientists since Darwin's early work on carnivorous plants. Suction takes place after mechanical triggering and is owing to a release of stored elastic energy in the trap body accompanied by a very fast opening and closing of a trapdoor, which otherwise closes the trap entrance watertight. The exceptional trapping speed--far above human visual perception--impeded profound investigations until now. Using high-speed video imaging and special microscopy technique

The role of methyl salicylate in prey searching behavior of the predatory mite phytoseiulus persimilis.

Many carnivorous arthropods use herbivore-induced plant volatiles to locate their prey. These plant volatiles are blends of up to hundreds of compounds. It is often unknown which compounds in such a complex volatile blend represent the signal to the foraging carnivore. We studied the role of methyl salicylate (MeSA) as part of the volatile blend in the foraging behavior of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis by using a Y-tube olfactometer. MeSA is one of the compounds released by lima bean, infested with Tetranychus urticae--a prey species of the predatory mite. MeSA attracted satiated

Essential compounds in herbivore-induced plant volatiles that attract the predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi.

Carnivorous arthropods use volatile infochemicals emitted from prey-infested plants in their foraging behavior. Although several volatile components are common among plant species, the compositions differ among prey-plant complexes. Studies showed that the predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi is attracted only to previously experienced plant volatiles. In this study, we identified the attractant components in prey-induced plant volatiles of two prey-plant complexes. N. womersleyi reared on Tetranychus kanzawai-infested tea leaves showed significant preference for a mixture of three synthetic c

Optimizing Crops for Biocontrol of Pests and Disease.

Volatile compounds and extrafloral nectar are common defenses of wild plants; however, in crops they bear an as-yet underused potential for biological control of pests and diseases. Odor emission and nectar secretion are multigene traits in wild plants, and thus form difficult targets for breeding. Furthermore, domestication has changed the capacity of crops to express these traits. We propose that breeding crops for an enhanced capacity for tritrophic interactions and volatile-mediated direct resistance to herbivores and pathogens can contribute to environmentally-friendly and sustainable agr

In vitro characterization of a nineteenth-century therapy for smallpox.

In the nineteenth century, smallpox ravaged through the United States and Canada. At this time, a botanical preparation, derived from the carnivorous plant Sarracenia purpurea, was proclaimed as being a successful therapy for smallpox infections. The work described characterizes the antipoxvirus activity associated with this botanical extract against vaccinia virus, monkeypox virus and variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox. Our work demonstrates the in vitro characterization of Sarracenia purpurea as the first effective inhibitor of poxvirus replication at the level of early viral tra

Optimization of Propagation of the Polish Strain of Aldrovanda vesiculosa in Tissue Culture.

Aldrovanda vesiculosa is a rare and critically endangered carnivorous plant species. Its populations have declined worldwide, so there is a need to protect the species from extinction. The research was conducted to establish an effective method of in vitro propagation of the species in order to obtain plants for reintroduction in the wild. The procedures included disinfection, multiplication, and acclimatization of plants. Contamination-free in vitro cultures were established using shoots and turions, which were disinfected with 0.25% sodium hypochlorite. The shoots were first defoliated. The

Temporal dynamics of hepatic mRNA levels of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism-related genes in rainbow trout: Impact of a plant-based diet from first feeding.

Early-life nutrition plays a critical role in shaping metabolic trajectories in fish, particularly in carnivorous species like rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which displays limited capacity to utilize plant-based diets. This study investigated the temporal changes in mRNA abundance of key hepatic genes involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism from first feeding to 100 days post-first meal in rainbow trout fry fed either a commercial-like or fully plant-based diet. mRNA abundance was quantified by RT-qPCR at six time points, revealing marked ontogenetic shifts in metabolic gene profi

Carnivorous Nepenthes Pitchers with Less Acidic Fluid House Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria.

Carnivorous pitcher plants are uniquely adapted to nitrogen limitation, using pitfall traps to acquire nutrients from insect prey. Pitcher plants in the genus Sarracenia may also use nitrogen fixed by bacteria inhabiting the aquatic microcosms of their pitchers. Here, we investigated whether species of a convergently evolved pitcher plant genus, Nepenthes, might also use bacterial nitrogen fixation as an alternative strategy for nitrogen capture. First, we constructed predicted metagenomes of pitcher organisms from three species of Singaporean Nepenthes using 16S rRNA sequence data and correla

Laboratory scale evaluation of the feasibility of locally found bladderworts as biological agents to control dengue vector, Aedes aegypti in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: The carnivorous genus Utricularia also includes aquatic species that have the potential to trap a wide range of prey, leading its death due to anoxia. However, the effectiveness of such an approach with carnivorous plants for vector control has not been evaluated in Sri Lanka. METHODS: Early instar (i & ii) and late instar (iii & iv) larvae of Aedes aegypti were exposed to locally found bladderwort (U. aurea Lour and Utricularia sp.). The experimental design was set with 10 larvae (both early and late instars separately) in 250 mL of water with bladderworts containing approximatel

A survey of Eocene stomach contents illuminates the origins of frugivory and seed dispersal in neornithine (crown group) birds.

Stomach contents with seeds in avian fossils from the latest early/earliest middle Eocene Messel oil shale (Germany) are surveyed. 20 bird specimens belonging to 10 species with seeds produced by at least 13 different plant species are reported. The fossils provide the earliest direct evidence for avian frugivory and suggest that seed dispersal by neornithine (crown group) birds occurred earlier and was more extensive than currently thought. For the first time, we report seeds in the stomach content of stem group Trogoniformes, which today are important seed dispersers in the New World tropics

Association between dairy-rich dietary pattern and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: Findings from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study.

BACKGROUNDS: Dietary components and the development of metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD) are closely linked, but large-scale studies on dietary patterns and MASLD are scarce, most previous studies having focused on individual nutrients or foods rather than overall dietary patterns. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary patterns and MASLD in Koreans. METHODS: A total of 6,052 participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated Korean semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire comprising 1

Morpho-Histological Studies of the Gastrointestinal Tract of the Orange-Rumped Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina Linnaeus, 1758), with Special Reference to Morphometry and Histometry.

The morphology of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) is a strong indicator of a species' dietary habits. The objective of this study was to describe and quantitatively analyze the gross and microanatomy of the digestive tract of the orange/red-rumped agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) and relate it to the feeding habits of this animal. The digestive tracts of six adult males were used for this study. The results showed that the esophagus was thick (mean thickness of 1023.78 ± 28.97 μm) and lined by keratinized epithelium with scant esophageal glands. Mucosa-associated lymphocytic infiltration was robus

Quantitative effects of leaf area removal on indirect defense of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) in nature.

Plants employ a diverse array of defensive traits against multiple enemies. While many plant defenses are well-studied, quantitative feedback effects of leaf area loss on the expression of defensive traits remain little understood. Extrafloral nectar (EFN; an indirect defense acting via the attraction of carnivorous arthropods) is generally considered 'cheap' as it is composed mainly of photosynthates. However, to what extent EFN secretion is related to the amount of intact photosynthetic leaf area is unknown. In this study, we measured the production of EFN, ant attraction, and herbivore dama

The mixotrophic nature of photosynthetic plants.

Plants typically have photosynthetically competent green shoots. To complement resources derived from the atmospheric environment, plants also acquire essential elements from soil. Inorganic ions and molecules are generally considered to be the sources of soil-derived nutrients, and plants tested in this respect can grow with only inorganic nutrients and so can live as autotrophs. However, mycorrhizal symbionts are known to access nutrients from organic matter. Furthermore, specialist lineages of terrestrial photosynthetically competent plants are mixotrophic, including species that obtain org

Herbivore-induced volatile production by Arabidopsis thaliana leads to attraction of the parasitoid Cotesia rubecula: chemical, behavioral, and gene-expression analysis.

Many plant species defend themselves against herbivorous insects indirectly by producing volatiles in response to herbivory. These volatiles attract carnivorous enemies of the herbivores. Research on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. has contributed considerably to the unraveling of signal transduction pathways involved in direct plant defense mechanisms against pathogens. Here, we demonstrate that Arabidopsis is also a good candidate for studying signal transduction pathways involved in indirect defense mechanisms by showing that: (1) Adult females of Cotesia rubecula, a specia

Can a carnivore diet provide all essential nutrients?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to summarize current contributions affecting knowledge and predictions about the nutritional adequacy of plant-free diets, contextualized by historical accounts. RECENT FINDINGS: As demonstrated in recent experiments, nutrient interactions and metabolic effects of ketogenic diets can impact nutritional needs, sometimes resulting in nutrient-sparing effects. Other studies highlight conflicting hypotheses about the expected effect on metabolic acidosis, and therefore mineral status, of adding alkaline mineral-rich vegetables. SUMMARY: A carnivore di

Pandemics and Traditional Plant-Based Remedies. A Historical-Botanical Review in the Era of COVID19.

Pandemics are as old as humanity and since ancient times we have turned to plants to find solutions to health-related problems. Traditional medicines based mostly on plants are still the only therapeutic possibility in many developing countries, but even in the richest ones, herbal formulation currently receives increased attention. Plants are natural laboratories whose complex secondary metabolism produces a wealth of chemical compounds, leading to drug discovery - 25% of widespread use drugs are indeed of plant origin. Their therapeutic potential is even bigger: although many plant-based com
