Carotid-Femoral Pulse Wave Velocity as a Risk Marker for Development of Complications in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Background The value of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) as risk factor for development of complications in type 1 diabetes mellitus remains to be determined. We investigated associations between cfPWV and renal outcomes, cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods and Results cfPWV was measured with SphygmoCor in 633 people with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Median (interquartile range) follow-up was 6.2 (5.8-6.7) years. End points included progression in albuminuria group, decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥30%,

Descriptive study of the relationship between the subclinical carotid disease and biomarkers, carotid femoral pulse wave velocity in patients with hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a significant early prediction signal for preclinical atherosclerosis. Plasma homocysteine (Hcy) level is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), an index of arterial stiffness (AS), has showed its value in the evaluation of AS in vascular-related diseases. The data regarding the relationships between cIMT and other indices of vascular damage are limited and partly controversial. We aim to investigate the relationships between cIMT and other indices of vascular damage such as Hcy and carotid femoral

Temporal longitudinal associations of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and carotid intima-media thickness with resting heart rate and inflammation in youth.

We examined the temporal longitudinal associations of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) with the risk of elevated resting heart rate (RHR) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). We studied 3,862 adolescents, mean age 17.7 (SD 0.3 yr), followed-up for 7 yr until age 24.5 (0.7) yr, from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, UK. RHR, fasting plasma hsCRP, cfPWV, and cIMT were repeatedly assessed and analyzed using logistic regression, linear mixed-effect, and structural equation models adjusting for important covariates.

Association of estimated carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity with frailty in middle-aged and older adults with cardiometabolic disease.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of frailty in individuals with cardiometabolic disease (CMD) has become a growing concern in public health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) and frailty in middle-aged and older adults with CMD. METHODS: We analyzed data from 23,313 non-institutionalized adults with CMD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2018. Frailty status was determined using the frailty index, and logistic regression models were used to assess the association of ePWV with frailty risk. Multivariable

The Role of Carotid-Femoral Pulse Wave Velocity in a Metabolic Syndrome Patient with Sudden Cardiac Arrest: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity reflecting aortic stiffness could be used as an independent predictor of future cardiovascular events for an individual with metabolic syndrome. However, the routine use of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity is suboptimized in clinical practice. We report a case of metabolic syndrome with increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and subsequently developed myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac arrest. CASE PRESENTATION: A Polish man of an age between 40 and 50 years previously diagnosed with metabolic syndrome with essential hypertensi

Pediatric dyslipidemia is associated with increased urinary ACE activity, blood pressure values, and carotidal-femoral pulse wave velocity.

This study aimed to evaluate the enzymatic activity of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in children and adolescents to investigate their relationship with dyslipidemia and other cardiometabolic alterations. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure (BP), and fasting lipid concentrations were taken from 360 subjects. Categorization was done according to the levels of each lipoprotein (total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), LDL-C, HDL-C, and non-HDL-C) into three groups: normolipidemic (NL), borderline (BL), and dyslipidemic (DL). Enzymatic activity in urine was measured using the subst

Relationship between carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and decreased left ventricular diastolic function in patient with coronary heart disease: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Arterial compliance is an independent predictor of diastolic dysfunction. Invasive catheterization can accurately reflect diastolic function. However, studies on the invasive assessment of diastolic function are currently limited. This study aimed to determine whether the diastolic function of the heart can be predicted by combining noninvasive detection of arterial elasticity indicators. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 390 hospitalized patients suspected of having coronary heart disease and underwent coronary angiography (CAG) at the South Hospital of the Sixth Peopl

Blood Pressure Mediates the Association Between Carotid-Femoral Pulse Wave Velocity and Basal Ganglia Enlarged Perivascular Spaces: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Although carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is the non-invasive gold standard for assessing aortic stiffness, evidence linking cf-PWV to basal ganglia enlarged perivascular spaces (BG-EPVS) in the general population is limited. We aimed to evaluate this association and quantify the mediating role of blood pressure (BP) in community-based adults. This cross-sectional study included 485 participants from the Kailuan cohort. Cf-PWV was measured by ultrasound, and BG-EPVS were graded on 3.0-Tesla MRI. Logistic regression, restricted cubic spline, and mediation analyses were applied to qu

Serum lipid level and lifestyles are associated with carotid femoral pulse wave velocity among adults: 4.4-year prospectively longitudinal follow-up of a clinical trial.

Lifestyle modifications are recommended as the initial treatment for high blood pressure. The influence of dyslipidemia might be via moderate arterial stiffness, which results in hypertension and cardiovascular disease. We used data from a subgroup of the lifestyle, level of serum lipids/carotid femoral-pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) Susceptibility BEST Study, a population-based study of community-dwelling adults aged 45-75 years. The serum lipid level and CF-PWV were measured at baseline, and lifestyle such as smoking status, sleeping habits, and the level of oil or salt intake was determined w

Independent and Joint Associations of Lipoprotein(a) and Homocysteine with Carotid-Femoral Pulse-Wave Velocity in Adults with Treated Hypertension: A Single-Centre Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV) is the reference-standard non-invasive measure of central arterial stiffness and a validated marker of cardiovascular risk in hypertension. While lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and homocysteine have each been implicated in vascular injury, their independent and combined associations with arterial stiffness in treated hypertension remain uncertain. In this study, we examined the associations of Lp(a), homocysteine, and peripheral artery disease (PAD) with cfPWV and assessed whether concomitant elevation of Lp(a) and homocysteine was ass

Regional arterial stiffness in central and peripheral arteries is differentially related to endothelial dysfunction assessed by brachial flow-mediated dilation in metabolic syndrome.

The interrelationship between endothelial function and arterial stiffness may be different for central and peripheral arteries due to their structural and functional differences. The study aims to assess the interrelationship between central and peripheral vascular function and haemodynamics in metabolic syndrome. Thirty-seven patients [63.0 (57.5-66.0) years, 68.4% males] of metabolic syndrome (National Cholesterol Education Program - Adult Treatment Panel-III criteria) were studied. Carotid-femoral, carotid-radial pulse wave velocity and augmentation index (AIx@75) were assessed using applan

Effect of cinacalcet treatment on vascular arterial stiffness among peritoneal dialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

AIM: Although calcimimetics cinacalcet can reduce parathyroid hormone level and control secondary hyperparathyroidism in end-stage renal disease patients, risk of vascular calcification remains high. Whether cinacalcet can further reduce vascular damage or arterial stiffness is unknown. METHODS: We studied the effect of cinacalcet in 33 peritoneal dialysis patients with inadequately controlled secondary hyperparathyroidism despite standard treatment. The primary outcome was the aortic pulse wave velocity at 26 and 52 months after cinacalcet treatment. The pulse wave velocity was compared with

Cerebrovascular Damage Mediates Relations Between Aortic Stiffness and Memory.

Aortic stiffness is associated with cognitive decline. Here, we examined the association between carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and cognitive function and investigated whether cerebrovascular remodeling and parenchymal small vessel disease damage mediate the relation. Analyses were based on 1820 (60% women) participants in the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik Study. Multivariable linear regression models adjusted for vascular and demographic confounders showed that higher carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity was related to lower memory score (standardized β: -0.071±0.023; P=0
