Volar fracture dislocations of the second and third carpometacarpal joints associated with acute carpal tunnel syndrome.

Volar fracture dislocation of the second and third metacarpal bases associated with acute carpal tunnel syndrome in a 17-year-old football player were treated with open reduction, via volar incision to decompress the carpal tunnel, and via a second dorsal incision for internal fixation of the fracture dislocations with Kirschner wire fixation and reinsertion of the avulsed extensor carpi radialis:longus tendon. Anatomic reduction by closed or open reduction is recommended to avoid leaving patients with a weak grip and pain over the site of the fracture.

Radiological Anatomy of the Shoulder, Elbow and Carpal Joints in Southern Giant Pouched Rats (Cricetomys ansorgei).

Radiography is frequently used for the evaluation of the musculoskeletal system in domestic and wild animal species. The aim of the study was to document the radiological anatomy of the shoulder, elbow and carpal joints and to provide length measurements of selective forelimb bones in southern giant pouched rats. Forelimb radiographs were obtained in seven adult male and female southern giant pouched rats under general anaesthesia. All rats had a well-developed clavicle, coracoid process and acromion. The minor and major tubercles were located further distally relative to the head of the humer

[Arthrosis of the wrist joint due to carpal instability. Therapeutic alternatives].

A kinematic analysis of the movement of the scaphoid, the lunatum and the triquetrum has shown that their turning axes do not correspond with each other. Without arthritis, and within the range of normal motion, the bones move without imposing any appreciable load on the ligaments. They merely guide the bones and hold them together. In the case of arthritic disorders and in states where abnormal frictional resistance occurs, or following trauma, the ligaments are highly loaded. This could lead to increased wear and ruptured ligaments. A series of 20 arthroscopies has shown that LT and SC ligam

Prosthetic Joint Infections in Patients Undergoing Carpal Tunnel Release.

INTRODUCTION: Little information is available regarding the rate of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) in patients undergoing carpal tunnel release (CTR) without antibiotic prophylaxis. Hand surgeons should be aware of patients' history of arthroplasty. METHODS: All patients who underwent CTR at our institution between 2012 and 2014 were identified and their charts were reviewed to identify those who had a history of total hip, knee, and/or shoulder arthroplasty. Further chart review consisted of identifying a history of PJI, use of perioperative antibiotics, and surgeon awareness of prior ar

Congenital true complete symphalangism of all proximal interphalangeal joints of hands with carpal anomalies: a case report.

Symphalangism is a rare condition which manifests in either PIP or DIP joint congenital fusion. Symphalangism may be with some other skeletal deformities. In our case, all PIP joints of both hands were fused with bilateral hypoplasia of carpal bones and Minaar type III lunatotriquetral coalition congenitally. No motion was detected in PIP joints with absence of cutaneous creases over all PIP joints. Radiologically, carpal hypoplasia and lunatotriquetral coalition were seen in all fingers with the absence of PIP joints. The patient's skeletal survey revealed no other pathology. He had no compla

Shape analysis of the carpal joint in healthy and septic arthritis in newborn calves.

Septic arthritis is common in newborn calves due to poor birth and housing hygiene. This study investigated the pathological deformities caused by arthritis in the carpal bones of calves using geometric morphometry. The changes in the carpal joint bones of newborn calves with septic arthritis were examined through shape analysis. The study included 20 healthy Simmental calves and 30 Simmental calves with septic arthritis. Dorso-palmar x-ray images of the carpal joint were taken, and geometric morphometry was performed on these images using 25 landmarks. The first principal components (PC1) rep

Novel arthrocentesis approaches to the carpal joint of the Dromedary Camel (Camelus dromedarius).

The knowledge gap regarding the topography and anatomy of the dromedary's carpal joint must be bridged to improve diagnostic and treatment procedures such as ultrasonography, arthrocentesis, and arthroscopy. Thirty-five distal forelimbs were harvested from 21 dromedaries and studied through gross dissection, casting, ultrasonography, and computerized tomography. Representative three-dimensional models of the joint cavities, recesses, and pouches were obtained using various casting agents. The safety and feasibility of different arthrocentesis approaches were evaluated. This study provides a de

Closed rupture of the flexor tendons caused by carpal bone and joint disorders.

We analysed 21 patients with closed rupture of the flexor tendons caused by carpal bone and joint disorders. The tendon that ruptured depended on the location of the bone perforation into the carpal tunnel. Radiocarpal arthrography was performed in 13 patients and capsular perforation was demonstrated by contrast medium leakage into the carpal canal in 11 patients. This proved a useful diagnostic test. The flexor tendon(s) were reconstructed with free tendon graft in 17 patients, cross-over transfer of flexor tendons from adjacent digits in two and buddying to an adjacent flexor tendon in one

The prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in patients with basal joint arthritis of the thumb.

Basal joint arthritis of the thumb and carpal tunnel syndrome are common conditions with an acknowledged coexistence. This article attempts to quantify the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in patients with basal joint arthritis and to examine some of the etiologic factors that affect the coexistence of the two disorders. Of 246 patients who had surgery about the basal joint, 95 patients (39%) were identified by chart review as having carpal tunnel syndrome. Eleven of 122 remaining patients contacted had symptomatic carpal tunnel syndrome confirmed by nerve-conduction studies, bringing the

Carpal Tunnel Volume after Basal Joint Arthroplasty in Postmenopausal Women.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome is occasionally associated with basal joint arthritis and is more common in postmenopausal women than in the general population. Currently, more evidence is needed to describe changes in the carpal tunnel after basal joint arthroplasty (BJA) of the thumb and to determine whether it is better to combine the release of the flexor retinaculum. The purpose of this study was to clarify the changes in the carpal tunnel cross-sectional area and carpal tunnel shape after complete removal of the trapezium during BJA of the thumb, according to computed tomography (CT)

Evaluation of Radiographic Instability of the Trapeziometacarpal Joint in Women With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

PURPOSE: To determine whether median nerve dysfunction measured by electrophysiologic studies in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is associated with thumb trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint instability. METHODS: We evaluated 71 women with CTS and 31 asymptomatic control women. Patients with generalized laxity or TMC joint osteoarthritis were excluded. We classified the electrophysiologic severity of CTS based on nerve conduction time and amplitude and assessed radiographic instability of the TMC joint based on TMC joint stress radiographs. We compared subluxation ratio between patients with CTS and c

Indirect decompression of the carpal tunnel during basal joint arthroplasty of the thumb.

PURPOSE: In patients having basal joint arthroplasty, rates of concomitant carpal tunnel syndrome may exceed 43%. Excision of the trapezium during basal joint arthroplasty partially releases the transverse carpal ligament. The objective of this study was to determine whether indirect release of the remaining fibers of the ligament at its insertion on the scaphoid tubercle through the same incision would adequately decompress the carpal canal. This would avoid the morbidity of a second incision. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 10 consecutive patients treated over a 2-year period who had c

The relationship between benign joint hypermobility syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) is defined as the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms in persons with generalized joint laxity in the absence of systemic rheumatologic disease. There is an association between soft tissue rheumatism, entrapment neuropathies, and BJHS. The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between BJHS and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Ninety patients were included in the prospective controlled study. All selected participants were referred to our electrophysiological laboratory with clinical diagnosis of CTS. Subsequently, subjects were divided i

Experience with transtrapezium approach for transverse carpal ligament release in patients with coexisted trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.

An experience with transtrapezium approach for carpal tunnel release is reported. This technique seems to be successful in cases when carpal tunnel syndrome and first carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis coexist and surgical treatment is indicated for both conditions. The transtrapezium approach to carpal tunnel release allows for complete carpal tunnel release without increasing the risk of surgical complications.

Induction of Synovitis Using Interleukin-1 Beta: Are There Differences in the Response of Middle Carpal Joint Compared to the Tibiotarsal Joint?

Background: The effects of recombinant interleukin-1β (rIL-1β) have been described for the middle carpal joint (MCJ). However, we are unaware of any studies that have described the cytological response of the tibiotarsal joint (TTJ) to rIL-1β or compared the clinical and cytological responses of the MCJ to the TTJ following the administration of intra-articular rIL-1β. Such information is critical for researchers planning to use rIL-1β to create acute synovitis models in horses. Objectives: To compare the clinical and cytological responses of the MCJ to the TTJ following administration of intr
