In vivo and in vitro effects of extracts from Cassia aubrevillei in onchocerciasis.

A traditional herbal drug, called "Ganna Ganna", is used in rural areas of Liberia to treat onchocerciasis. It is prepared from the bark of the "Ganna Ganna" tree, which was identified as Cassia aubrevillei. An aqueous extract was prepared from the bark according to informations from local people and its effects on microfilaria (mf) density and pruritus were studied in eleven patients with onchocerciasis. In four patients a 1.8-4.8 fold increase in mf density was observed after three weeks and in two patients mf counts dropped to almost zero. Histology and embryogram of adult worms, isolated a

CNS inhibitory effects of barakol, a constituent of Cassia siamia Lamk.

The present study determined the pharmacological profile of barakol, a major constituent of Cassia siamea Lamk., in rodent behavioral and neurochemical tests. Barakol reduced spontaneous locomotor activity, increased the number of sleeping animals and prolonged the thiopental-induced sleeping time, indicating a sedative effect. As for interactions between barakol and convulsants (pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), picrotoxin, bicuculline and strychnine), only a high dose (100 mg/kg, i.p.) of barakol slightly prolonged the latency of clonic convulsion induced by picrotoxin. This suggests that the sedati

Masking Effect of Cassia grandis Sensory Defect with Flavoured Stuffed Olives.

Carao (Cassia grandis) is an America native plant characterized by its high iron content. This particular property allows its use as a natural additive to fix the black colour in California-style black olives, while masking its unpleasant aroma by stuffing olives with flavoured hydrocolloid. The tasting panel evaluated olives filled with unflavoured hydrocolloid with a fruity aroma, classified them as an extra category. Olives with the Carao addition presented a positive aroma, but also showed negative sensory attributes such as cheese, fermented and metallic flavours/aromas. The aroma of lyop

Investigation on the stability in plant metabolomics with a special focus on freeze-thaw cycles: LC-MS and NMR analysis to Cassiae Semen (Cassia obtusifolia L.) seeds as a case study.

Metabolomics is a rapid and sensitive tool for the detection of dynamic metabolic compositions in the study of systemic metabolic consequences. However, it is also susceptible to a tiny variation of pre-analytical handling procedures. To provide reproducible results, specific knowledge on metabolites perturbance along with different freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) is needed for further metabolomics studies. In this paper, five FTCs of germinated Cassiae Semen (CS) were chosen as a case study to investigate the influence of FTC effect based on UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS and NMR technologies. A total of 108

The seed extract of Cassia obtusifolia offers neuroprotection to mouse hippocampal cultures.

The precise causative factors in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's disease remain elusive, but mechanisms implicated comprise excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and in the case of AD, the amyloid beta peptide (Abeta). Current therapeutic strategies for such disorders are very limited; thus, traditional herbal medicines currently receive increased attention. The seeds of Cassia obtisufolia have long been used in traditional eastern medicine and more recently the ethanolic fraction of the seeds (COE) has been shown to attenuate memory impairments in mice
