Antioxidant protection of resveratrol and catechin in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Moderate consumption of red wine reduces the risk of heart disease and extends lifespan, but the relative contribution of wine polyphenols to these effects is unclear. In this work, the capacity of resveratrol and catechin to protect the eukaryotic microorganism Saccharomyces cerevisiae against oxidative stress caused by different agents, hydrogen peroxide, carbon tetrachloride, and cadmium, was evaluated. Under all stress conditions, both polyphenols increased tolerance, although their protection was more evident under peroxide exposure. By using mutant strains deficient in specific antioxida

A Review of the Antiviral Role of Green Tea Catechins.

Over the centuries, infectious diseases caused by viruses have seriously threatened human health globally. Viruses are responsible not only for acute infections but also many chronic infectious diseases. To prevent diseases caused by viruses, the discovery of effective antiviral drugs, in addition to vaccine development, is important. Green tea catechins (GTCs) are polyphenolic compounds from the leaves of Camelliasinensis. In recent decades, GTCs have been reported to provide various health benefits against numerous diseases. Studies have shown that GTCs, especially epigallocatechin-3-gallate

Catechin Augments the Antifungal Efficacy of Fluconazole Against Candida parapsilosis.

The rising global incidence of Candida parapsilosis infections is increasingly complicated by antifungal resistance, resulting in frequent therapeutic failure. This study investigated the potential of the natural compound catechin to enhance the efficacy of fluconazole through synergistic interaction. We evaluated the susceptibility of C. parapsilosis clinical isolates and a reference strain to combinations of catechin and fluconazole using standardized microbiological assays and molecular techniques. In vivo efficacy was assessed using the Galleria mellonella infection model. Mechanistic stud

Insights into Catechin-Copper Complex Structure and Biologic Activity Modulation.

Compounds of natural origin found in varying quantities in plant-based products constitute a highly significant category, possessing structural significance as well as the capacity to regulate oxidative processes. The activity of these compounds may be modulated by the composition of the biological environment in which they operate, the pH of the environment, or the presence of metal cations in plants or plant extracts. A successful complexation reaction was mainly confirmed by FT-IR, observing the shift from the original transmittance of catechin bonds, especially O-H ones. This work shows th

Green Tea Catechin (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) Facilitates Fracture Healing.

Green tea drinking can ameliorate postmenopausal osteoporosis by increasing the bone mineral density. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the abundant and active compound of tea catechin, was proven to be able to reduce bone loss and ameliorate microarchitecture in female ovariectomized rats. EGCG can also enhance the osteogenic differentiation of murine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and inhibit the osteoclastogenesis in RAW264.7 cells by modulation of the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kB (RANK)/RANK ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegrin (OPG) (RANK/RANKL/OPG) pathway. The green tea catechin, epigallocatechin gallate inhibits chikungunya virus infection.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus that causes chikungunya fever and has infected millions of people mainly in developing countries. The associated disease is characterized by rash, high fever and severe arthritis that can persist for years. CHIKV has adapted to Aedes albopictus, which also inhabits temperate regions, including Europe and the United States of America and might cause new, large outbreaks there. No treatment or licensed CHIKV vaccine exists. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major component of green tea, has, among other beneficial properties, an

Catechin gallate triggers metabolomic and lipidomic alteration in Toxoplasma gondii.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, which has global importance owing to its significant socioeconomic, public health, and veterinary burdens. Toxoplasmosis is currently treated with a combination of pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine. These drugs have treatment failures and toxicity and are ineffective against the bradyzoite stage. Hence, there is a need for new inhibitors against T. gondii. Catechin gallate (CG) is a known antioxidant with demonstrated antiparasitic properties. However, little is known about its anti-Toxoplasma gondii activ

Role and mechanism of catechin in skeletal muscle cell differentiation.

Muscle degeneration and cachexia caused by aging and chronic diseases seriously reduce the quality of life of patients. Catechins in tea enhance skeletal muscle performance, but the specific function and mechanism require further exploration. Myogenic differentiation is accompanied by extensive changes in cell morphology and gene expression patterns. In this study, we measured the number, length, diameter, and transcriptional levels of MyoD, MyoG, and MyHC of myotubes after C2C12 cell differentiation to assess changes in response to four different catechin monomers: epicatechin, epigallocatech

Tea catechin EGCg suppresses the mgl gene associated with halitosis.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), the main antimicrobial tea catechin, has been reported to inhibit growth and virulence factors of oral pathogens in vitro. Although the mechanism is unclear, the potential of EGCg in reducing halitosis caused by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) has been suggested. This study tested the hypothesis that EGCg reduces VSCs by suppressing mgl, the gene encoding L-methionine-α-deamino-γ-mercaptomethane-lyase, responsible for methyl mercaptan (CH₃SH) production by oral anaerobes. In this study, the effect of EGCg on in vitro growth, CH₃SH production, and mgl gene expr

Green Tea Catechins as Therapeutic Antioxidants for Glaucoma Treatment.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness and visual impairment, affecting more than 80 million individuals worldwide. Oxidative stress and inflammation-induced neurodegenerative insults to retinal ganglion cells are the main pathogenesis of glaucoma. Retinal ganglion cells, the retinal neurons transmitting the visual signals to the visual cortex in the brain, have very limited regeneration or recovery capacity after damages. Apart from intraocular pressure-lowering treatments, there is still no clinically effective treatment to rescue the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells i

Antiobesity effects of green tea catechins: a mechanistic review.

Green tea catechins (GTC) are polyphenolic compounds present in the unfermented dried leaves of the plant, Camellia sinensis. Results from a number of randomized, controlled intervention trials have shown that consumption of GTC (270 mg to 1200 mg/day) may reduce body weight and fat. There are several proposed mechanisms whereby GTC may influence body weight and composition. The predominating hypothesis is that GTC influences sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, increasing energy expenditure and promoting the oxidation of fat. Caffeine, naturally present in green tea, also influences SNS

Separation of catechins and methylxanthines in tea samples by capillary electrochromatography.

In this paper, the simultaneous separation of several polyphenols such as (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin, theophylline, caffeine in green and black teas by capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was developed. Several experimental parameters such as stationary phase type, mobile phase composition, buffer and pH, inner diameter of the columns, sample injection, were evaluated to obtain the complete separation of the analysed compounds. Baseline resolution of the studied polyphenols was achieved within 30 min by using a capillary column (id 100 microm) packed with bidentate C

Elucidation of a diurnal pattern of catechin exudation by Centaurea stoebe.

The exudation of secondary metabolites at phytotoxic concentrations has been proposed as a mechanism of invasion for some exotic plant species. Catechin is a natural flavanoid implicated in the potential allelopathic interactions of Centaurea stoebe. However, recent studies have shown that catechin is highly unstable and not likely to accumulate in growing medium at phytotoxic concentrations. All previous studies that investigated the allelopathic potential of catechin assumed a continuous exudation of this compound by C. stoebe. Contrary to this, but similar to many other plant secondary meta

Effects of Paeonia-derived Catechin on Neutrophil-associated Inflammation in Pneumonia.

Pneumonia in children is frequently accompanied by excessive inflammatory responses and immune dysregulation, which may lead to severe clinical outcomes. Catechin has shown anti-inflammatory activity in multiple disease settings, but its role and molecular mechanisms in pneumonia remain unclear. Public bulk RNA-sequencing data from pediatric pneumonia (GSE261482) and public mouse lung single-cell RNA-sequencing data from an experimental pneumonia model (GSE295484) were analyzed using weighted gene co-expression network analysis, differential expression analysis, cell-type annotation, and gene

Mesoporous catechin hydrogel for enhanced astaxanthin-based inflammatory bowel disease therapy.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a persistent intestinal inflammation driven by epithelial barrier dysfunction, immunological imbalance, and microbial dysbiosis. The restoration of gut homeostasis through biomaterial-based strategies offers a potential avenue for alleviating inflammation in IBD. Herein, an alginate-based hydrogel incorporating astaxanthin-loaded mesoporous catechin nanoparticles (AST@MCN-Gel) was designed to relieve inflammation and rebalance gut homeostasis. The mesoporous framework of MCN enabled effective encapsulation of the hydrophobic AST, thereby increasing its water
