The purpose of the study was to test the tagging performance and patient's acceptance of a reduced cathartic preparation, based on iodixanol and PEG, administered to patients 3 h before the exam. One hundred and thirty-two asymptomatic patients were enrolled. As colonic cleansing we used PEG macrogol 3350. For fluid tagging iodixanol was orally administered 3 h before the exam, in a total dose of 50 mL mixed with 34.8 g of PEG in 750 mL of water. Image's review showed 446 segments (56.4%) clean of feces and 346 segments (43.6%) with feces. Untagged fluid was observed in 74/706 (10.5%) segments

Cathartic colon is a historic term for the anatomic alteration of the colon secondary to chronic stimulant laxative use. Because some have questioned whether this is a real entity, we investigated changes occurring on barium enema in patients ingesting stimulant laxatives. Our study consisted of two parts. In part 1, a retrospective review of consecutive barium enemas performed on two groups of patients with chronic constipation (group 1, stimulant laxative use [n=29]; group 2, no stimulant laxative use [n=26]) was presented to a radiologist who was blinded to the patient group. A data sheet c

Twelve adult volunteers were given 24 81-mg aspirin tablets and were randomly assigned into the following treatment groups: (1) control aspirin, (2) 30 mL of ipecac repeated if vomiting not induced, (3) 60 g of activated charcoal per 15 g of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), and (4) ipecac repeated if needed, followed by activated charcoal/MgSO4 given 1 1/2 hours after the last vomiting episode. All treatments began 60 minutes following aspirin ingestion. Urine was collected for 48 hours for percent total salicylate excretion. Mean +/- SD recovery of salicylate from urine was as follows: aspirin, 96.

Cathartic colon (CC), a type of slow-transit constipation caused by the long-term use of stimulant laxatives, does not have a precise and effective treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of Bifidobacterium bifidum CCFM1163 to relieve CC and to investigate its underlying mechanism. Male C57BL/6J mice were treated with senna extract for 8 weeks, followed by a 2-week treatment with B. bifidum CCFM1163. The results revealed that B. bifidum CCFM1163 effectively alleviated CC symptoms. The possible mechanism of B. bifidum CCFM1163 in relieving CC was analyzed by measuring the intestinal

The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac is extremely toxic to Old World Gyps vultures (median lethal dose -0.1-0.2 mg/kg), evoking visceral gout, renal necrosis, and mortality within a few days of exposure. Unintentional secondary poisoning of vultures that fed upon carcasses of diclofenac-treated livestock decimated populations in the Indian subcontinent. Because of the widespread use of diclofenac and other cyclooxygenase-2 inhibiting drugs, a toxicological study was undertaken in turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) as an initial step in examining sensitivity of New World scavenging

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to develop a method to subtract barium-labeled stool from the colon using a phantom and to evaluate the performance of the technique in a pilot human population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A phantom containing 6-mm flat polyps and three types of simulated stool (homogeneous, moderately heterogeneous, and severely heterogeneous) mixed with barium was created, scanned, and tested using three stool subtraction algorithms but no cathartic. Thirty patients with suspected colorectal polyps were studied using stool tagging to determine which was the most effective

Effects of autonomic, anti-histaminic, anti-5HT drugs, papaverine and morphine on cathartic activity of spasmogens such as pilocarpine, 5-HT and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were tested by giving these drugs to mice subcutaneously. Mice used were male dd strain weighing 20 +/- 2 g and the catharatic effect was evaluated by the all or none method. The cathartic effect by pilocarpine was inhibited markedly by anti-cholinergic drugs such as atropine and diphenhydramine, but not by hexamethonium and methysergide. Therefore, the action of pilocarpine was found to be direct on the acetylcholine receptors

OBJECTIVES: Adequate bowel preparation and tagging are critical in optimizing CTC performance. Iohexol has a higher safety profile than other available tagging agents. This study aims to determine if iohexol serves as an adequate fluid and stool tagging agent in conjunction with minimally cathartic bowel preparation.
METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 50 participants ingested 50 mL of oral iohexol for tagging and 10 oz magnesium citrate for bowel preparation prior to CTC. Written informed consent was obtained. CTC was performed in all participants in at least two of the standar

According to some theories of emotion regulation, dreams could modify negative emotions and ultimately reduce their intensity. We introduce here the idea of cathartic dream, a specific and separate type of emotional dream, which is characterized by a dynamic plot with emotional twists, and where negative emotions are expressed and ultimately decreased. This process would reflect psychological relief (catharsis according to the Aristotelian definition) and fulfil an emotion regulation function. We developed and validated a tool using a large language model to emotionally categorize the differen

Introduction: Cathartic colon (CC) is a type of slow-transit constipation caused by a patient's long-term use of irritating laxatives. Probiotics play a crucial role in managing constipation. Objectives: This study aims to identify probiotics that can alleviate CC and explore their specific mechanisms of action. Methods: The CC-model was constructed using senna leaf extract. Bifidobacterium bifidum was applied to the mice for intervention. Relevant marker changes were then examined using ELISA and RT-qPCR. Furthermore, 16S rDNA sequencing was utilized for functional prediction of intestinal mi

BACKGROUND: Screening for colorectal cancer is widely recommended, but the preferred strategy remains unidentified. We aimed to compare participation and diagnostic yield between screening with colonoscopy and with non-cathartic CT colonography.
METHODS: Members of the general population, aged 50-75 years, and living in the regions of Amsterdam or Rotterdam, identified via the registries of the regional municipal administration, were randomly allocated (2:1) to be invited for primary screening for colorectal cancer by colonoscopy or by CT colonography. Randomisation was done per household wit

OBJECTIVES: Ingestion of a concentrated low-volume phosphate solution produces copious diarrhea, which cleanses the colon, but it occasionally causes renal failure due to calcium phosphate precipitation in renal tubules. We hypothesized that a concentrated low-volume sulfate solution would be an equally effective cathartic, and that urine produced after sulfate would have less tendency to precipitate calcium salts than urine produced after phosphate.
METHODS: Hydrated subjects ingested 75 ml of phosphosoda or an equimolar dose of sulfate salts in a small volume of solution. Four liters of PEG

Hemosporidians are intracellular pathogens that infect a range of endothermic and ectothermic hosts and are transmitted by dipteran vectors. These parasites are grouped into four families: Haemoproteidae, Plasmodiidae, Leucocytozoidae, and Garniidae, with the genera Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, and Leucocytozoon being the most common in birds. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to detect the infection frequency of hemosporidians and to perform hematological and biochemical analyses in free-living turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) in the Amazon biome, Brazil. Blood samples were collected

We report herein the rare case of a 26-year-old woman who developed a small-bowel obstruction caused by a medication "bezoar" or enterolith, following the long-term ingestion of magnesium oxide cathartics for constipation. Medication bezoars resulting from laxatives or cathartics have rarely been reported and we were only able to find two other such cases in the literature.

We report a 75-years-old woman, stable on a three-weekly hemodialysis program over a period of 3 years, who develop acute hyperphosphatemia secondary to phosphate administration for bowel preparation. The quick clinical diagnosis and the treatment with intensive hemodialysis resulted in a correction of hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, acidemia and other electrolyte abnormalities. The phosphate cathartics are contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficient or in dialysis program. Our case shows the severe side effects secondary to injudicious use of sodium phosphate cathartics.

The diagnosis and management of acute poisoning episodes in adolescents and young adults with anorexia nervosa are complicated by their underlying psychopathologic conditions. We investigated 23 consecutive cases of poisoning in 21 patients with anorexia nervosa reported to the Massachusetts Poison Center, Boston, during a 13-month period. All were intentional self-poisonings. Agents involved most often were psychotherapeutic drugs, cathartics, and/or analgesics. Potentially life-threatening drugs were often implicated in the poisoning. Diagnosis was complicated by purposefully deceptive infor

Most colon cleansing regimens for surgical and diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy are modifications of older barium enema X-ray preparations which have evolved in gastrointestinal laboratories influenced by empiric experience. Recent formal study allows for careful comparison of gut lavage, diet and cathartic, and oral sodium phosphate preparations. This review will evaluate oral lavage solutions and address their safety, tolerance and efficacy. Administration options are discussed as well as other diet and cathartic methods previously referred to as 'standard preps'.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant laxative abuse as a purging behavior can be profound in those with eating disorders. However, the psychopathology leading to stimulant laxative abuse is poorly understood. Furthermore, the medical impact of stimulant laxative abuse has not been studied in this population.
METHODS: Six individuals abusing stimulant laxatives underwent a barium enema to assess for evidence of the cathartic colon syndrome and 29 individuals engaging in any purging behaviors completed the Tri-dimensional Personality Questionnaire-Short Form, Sensitivity to Punishment/Sensitivity to Reward Qu

Gastric emptying may not be the most appropriate way to decontaminate a person who has self-poisoned. Other methods, including emetics, cathartics and the use of activated charcoals, may be more appropriate in some circumstances.

This review examines the various clinical options used to elicit gastric emptying, viz. drug-induced emesis, mechanical pharyngeal stimulation, gastric lavage, and catharsis. Apomorphine and syrup of ipecac are the 2 drugs most frequently used for induction of emesis. Both agents act centrally and, in addition, syrup of ipecac has a peripheral action. Toxins ingested or foods previously eaten may inhibit or enhance emetic action by interfering with mediating and conducting mechanisms. Studies indicate that both syrup of ipecac and apomorphine are similarly effective in inducing emesis; however
