OBJECTIVE: This study had 2 objectives: (1) to describe the epidemiology of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who have no access to scheduled dialysis and (2) to evaluate whether a positive culture of the heparin-lock solution is associated with subsequent development of bacteremia.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort design for objective 1; and prospective cohort design for objective 2.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The study was conducted in a 770-bed public academic tertiary hospital in Dallas, Texas. The participants were p

Objective To explore the prognostic factors of central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection(CR-BSI)and provide reference for clinical practice. Methods The clinical data of 346 CR-BSI patients from February 2014 to July 2019 were retrospectively reviewed, and the prognostic factors were analyzed. Results Of the 346 CR-BSI patients,62 died, yielding a case-fatality rate of 17.92%.Univariate analysis showed that 18 factors including age(t=2.838,P=0.006),history of diabetes(χ2=5.966,P=0.015),time to withdrawing the tube after infection(t=5.026,P=0.000),ICU stay(χ2=6.885),P=0.009),catheter

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are regularly used in intensive care units, and catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) remains a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, particularly in preterm infants. Increased survival rate of extremely-low-birth-weight infants can be partly attributed to routine practice of CVC placement. The most common types of CVCs used in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) include umbilical venous catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, and tunneled catheters. CRBSI is defined as a laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection (BSI) with e

Defining and monitoring infection rates in home care is of major importance with the implementation of Adverse Event Outcome Reports. This study identifies the collective effort of home care quality improvement nurses in defining standard indicators for urinary tract infections and the ways to monitor these infections within and across home care agencies for evaluation and benchmarking.

BACKGROUND: The central venous catheter (CVC) is a commonly used device in managing acutely ill patients in the hospital. Bloodstream infections are major complications in patients who require a CVC. Several infection control measures have been developed to reduce bloodstream infections, one of which is CVC impregnated with various forms of antimicrobials (either with an antiseptic or with antibiotics).
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the effects of antimicrobial CVCs in reducing clinically diagnosed sepsis, established catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) and mortality.

Catheter-related infections (CRI) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. In this paper, we share our experience with CRI in HD patients. We recorded 49 cases of CRI among 167 patients during a period of 40 months (January 2018-April 2021). The incidence of CRI was 3.7 per 1000 catheter-days. The revealing symptoms were dominated by fever or chills (90%). Inflammatory signs were observed in 74% of cases with respectively concurrent exit-site (51%) and tunnel infection (6%). The biological inflammatory syndrome was found in 74% of patients (average CR…

Central venous catheter-related bacteraemia is a substantial and preventable source of iatrogenic morbidity and mortality. A single episode … defervescence may assist in making the diagnosis. This review explores the existing definitions of catheter-related infections and proposes a new and more rigorous classification with criteria for definite, probable and possible catheter-related bacteraemia. The authors hope that this classification will enhance the interpretation of the literature and the planning of new i …

We report three previously healthy individuals, aged 19-40 yr, with co-existing infected lower limb cutaneous wounds, who developed, in all probability, spinal space infections complicating continuous extradural analgesia. As the number of patients with extradural catheters and large cutaneous wounds represents a small fraction of the total number of patients with extradural catheters, three cases of presumed spinal space infection over a 4-yr period suggests that extradural analgesia with a catheter technique in this clinical situation is unsafe.

Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are recognized as an important and serious problem, especially in an intensive care unit (ICU), since they have far higher infection rates compared to those for other type of intravascular devices. However, in the operation room, there seems to be little concern among anesthesiologists regarding this problem. It is important for anesthesiologists to understand that CRBSIs can be prevented or reduced by evidence-based interventions such as hand hygiene, education in hand washing and alcohol-based hand rubbing, sterile catheter care techniques, pr

Central venous catheter-related infections are often occurring nosomical infections. Central venous catheters in a malposition are able to cause mechanical complications like pneumothorax, haemothorax, and embolism, likely followed by severe health problems. An overview of current international literature shows that a great part of problems with catheters originate out of unknown or unheeded guidelines. Results of intervention studies demonstrate that the rate of venous catheter-related complications, especially of infections, can be lowered significantly by interdisciplinary preparatory train…

Catheter-related infections (CRI) are frequent and manifest in a wide range of clinical situations. A rational approach is necessary for the adequate management of these infections. Whenever a CRI is suspected, two main questions have to be addressed: whether to remove the catheter and whether to initiate empiric antimicrobial treatment. As the clinical diagnosis of CRI has a low specificity, the catheter should be removed only in circumstances such as severe or ongoing sepsis, persistent bacteremia, pulmonary or peripheral embolization, endocarditis, signs of tunnel infection, when the cathet…

The present prospective study was carried out in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of a tertiary care teaching hospital in Mumbai. The objective was to determine the incidence, risk factors, mortality and organisms responsible for urinary catheter related infections (UCRI). Colonization and/or bacteriuria was labelled as urinary catheter related infection (UCRI). Forty-four patients with 51 urinary catheters were studied. Incidence of UCRI was 47.06%. Age, female sex and immunocompromised status did not increase the risk of UCRI. Duration of catheter in-situ and duration of stay in the

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related sepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by the presence of a catheter-associated infection along with a systemic inflammatory response. The continual increase in the use of central venous catheters (CVCs) has been associated with a substantial risk of infectious complications that prolong the hospital stay and increase costs.
METHODS: The literature on CVCs was reviewed to determine the incidence of catheterrelated sepsis, its diagnosis, and the role of biofilms in pathogenesis.
RESULTS: The European Sepsis Group recently reported that 28% of CVC infections i

INTRODUCTION: Catheter-related persistent Candida infections (CRPCI) may develop after Candida catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) due to colonization of the newly inserted catheter. However, the optimal timing for new catheter insertion remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical features of CRBSI due to Candida species and CRPCI. This was a retrospective study conducted in a teaching hospital in Japan.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical information on hospitalized patients diagnosed with Candida CRBSIs by catheter tip culture from 2015

AIM: Catheter-related infections are difficult to cure, and failure rates are high. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ethanol lock therapy (ELT) as catheter salvage strategy in children with central-line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), and to identify factors associated with treatment failure.
METHODS: Data were collected of all the children who received ELT for treatment of CLABSI during 2013-2018 due to failure of standard therapy or multiple catheter-related infections. Univariate and multivariate analyses of risk-factors for ELT failure were performed. Catheter sa…
