Epidemiological study of sporotrichosis and histoplasmosis in captive Latin American wild mammals, São Paulo, Brazil.

Sporotrichosis and histoplasmosis are deep mycosis with a high incidence in human beings in Brazil. In domestic animals histoplasmosis has been described only in dogs, but the occurrence of sporotrichosis among domestic animals in Brazil has been described in dogs, cats, mules and asses. There is also a case of this disease reported in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodites). The purpose of this research was to perform an epidomiological study of these mycoses using delayed hypersensitivity tests (histoplasmin and sporotrichin) in Latin American wild mammals. This research was assayed using 96 healthy

Plasmodium inui and Babesia microti infections in the squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus.

The course of Plasmodium inui and Babesia microti infections was studied in seven splenectomized squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) of Guyanan or Bolivian origin. Three of the monkeys were infected with P. inui either by the inoculations of parasitized blood or by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The remaining four monkeys were infected by the inoculation of parasitized blood, containing P. inui and B. microti in three and with B. microti only in one. The infection in all seven animals was severe, terminating fatally.

Topography landmarks of the infraorbital, mandibular and mentual foramens of Saimiri collinsi (Osgood, 1916) for anesthetic access and blocks.

Due to events related to the urbanization process, specimens of Saimiri collinsi are often referred to veterinarians specializing in the treatment of wild animals. With these professionals and the oral health of this species in mind, we evaluated the skull and the exact location of the infraorbital, mentual and mandibular foramens, with the aim of supporting the anesthetic block for dental procedures in Saimiri collinsi. The infraorbital foramen was located in the maxillary bone and was arranged with one on each side, except in one individual, with a pair in each antimer. The mentual foramen w

Morphological Tools for Describing the Male External Genitalia of Sapajus apella.

Sapajus apella is a wild monkey of South America distributed across almost all of Brazil. This species adapts to domesticated life and reproduces easily. The present study describes the macro- and microscopic morphology of male genital organs (penis, penis bone, glans penis, prepuce, bulb of penis, and urethra) of Sapajus apella. Four male monkeys were used in this study. For macroscopic description, the genitals were dissected, examined and photographed. For microscopic analysis, samples were stained by HE and Tricom Masson and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Th

Transmission dynamics of Cryptosporidium in primates and herbivores at the Barcelona zoo: a long-term study.

Factors influencing the transmission of Cryptosporidium in primates and herbivores housed at the Barcelona zoo have been analyzed. The relationship between continuous and discontinuous oocyst shedding, both animal housing conditions and abiotic factors (seasonality, humidity, temperature) was examined to explain the epizootiology of the protozoan. Thirty six fecal samples from each of 11 primates (Pongidae, Cebidae, Cercopithecidae and Lemuridae) and 22 herbivores (Elephantidae, Camelidae, Cervidae, Giraffidae and Bovidae) were examined over the period of 1 year. The parasite transmission was

Intestinal parasitism--protozoa and helminths--in primates at the Barcelona Zoo.

The faunistic results regarding intestinal parasitism by protozoa and helminths in 21 primate species (three Cebidae, thirteen Cercopithecidae, one Hylobatidae, one Lemuridae, three Pongidae) are reported. The primate species were housed in four separate galleries. Six faecal samples of each host species were subjected to coprological analysis. Fifteen parasite species were detected: 11 protozoa (Entamoeba coli, E. chattoni, E. hartmanni, Iodamoeba bütschlii, Endolimax nana, Giardia intestinalis, Chilomastix mesnilii, Enteromonas hominis, Trichomonas intestinalis, Balantidium coli, and Blastoc

Craniorachischisis in a squirrel monkey.

A stillborn squirrel monkey had craniorachischisis. The calvarium was absent and the skin and vertebral neural arches were cleft from the foramen magnum to the midlumbar region. Cranial nerves and degenerating neural tissue were attached to the cranial base and there were remnants of spinal cord in skin-covered areas of the spinal canal. The adrenal glands were normal. This is the only reported case of craniorachischisis in a monkey fetus.

Supernumerary molars in Anthropoidea, Adapidae, and Archaeolemur: implications for primate dental homologies.

The model of primate dental homologies and development recently proposed by Schwartz ('75, '78) is re-evaluated in view of documented exceptions to his account of postcanine supernumerary teeth in both anthropoids and prosimians. Schwartz concluded that catarrhines and living indriids retain only two true molars in each dental quadrant. As many as six molars on one side of the jaw can develop in rare instances in catarrhines, and supernumerary molars are also known for a wide range of other primates, including Cebidae, Adapidae, and subfossil Indriidae. Polydontia cannot be explained exclusive

Subspecies differences in curiosity and general activity for developing squirrel monkeys.

Curiosity and general activity characteristics in different squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) phenotypes were assessed. Ten infant squirrel monkeys, representing 2 subspecies (Bolivian and Colombian) and both genders, were observed on 4 testing sessions during which novel and familiar objects were presented to each subject. No consistent object-contact differences were found between subspecies or genders, but significant subspecies differences were found for the amount of time during each trial that the subjects climbed, remained stationary, vocalized, and showed abnormal behaviors. Familiar

Susceptibility of Peruvian Aotus monkeys to infection with different species of Plasmodium.

Splenectomized Aotus trivirgatus monkeys of Peruvian origin were tested for their susceptibility to infection with different species of Plasmodium. Strains of P. vivax from Vietnam and El Salvador produced infections in eight animals with maximum parasite densities ranging from 2,000-180,000 per mm3. A strain of P. falciparum from Cambodia produced maximum parasitemias in five animals ranging from 8-25% of the red blood cells infected. Although two monkeys inoculated with P. fragile had maximum parasitemias of 31% and 42%, treatment was not necessary for animal survival. Three monkeys infected

Copulation in free-ranging black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi).

I report ad libitum data on 18 copulations involving free-ranging black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. All copulations were performed in a dorsoventral position, as is typically reported for this genus. Intromission often appeared difficult to achieve, possibly as a result of the large size of the glans penis in these animals. The average length from intromission to termination of thrusting exceeded 17 min, followed by an average period of almost 2 min before separation occurred, which suggests the possibility of a copulatory lock. Offspring of the f

Eosinophilic myelocytoma in an owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus).

A mass found in the anterior mediastinum at necropsy of an adult female owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus) was morphologically consistent with an eosinophilic myelocytoma. Lymph nodes, kidneys, bone marrow, and other tissues were diffusely infiltrated by neoplastic cells. Intracellular and extracellular Charcot-Leyden crystals were present in the neoplasm.

Laventiana annectens, new genus and species: fossil evidence for the origins of callitrichine New World monkeys.

A previously unidentified middle Miocene primate from the La Venta deposits of Colombia is intermediate between squirrel monkeys (Saimiri) and callitrichines (marmosets and tamarins) in the morphology of the lower molars, mandible, and talus. Laventiana annectens is closely related to Saimiri and to Cebus (capuchin monkeys) yet resembles the probable callitrichine morphotype, demonstrating that archaic relatives of a Saimiri-like stock were suitable structural ancestors for the enigmatic callitrichines. Laventiana is also more primitive than Saimiri (= Neosaimiri) fieldsi from the same fauna,

Representations of the body surface in areas 3b and 1 of postcentral parietal cortex of Cebus monkeys.

The somatotopic organization of postcentral parietal cortex was determined with microelectrode mapping methods in a New World monkey, Cebus albifrons. As in previous studies in macaque, squirrel and owl monkeys, two separate representations of the body surface were found in regions corresponding to the architectonic fields 3b and 1. The two representations were roughly mirror-images of each other, with receptive field locations matched for recording sites along the common border. As in other monkeys, the glabrous digit tips of the hand and foot pointed rostrally in the Area 3b representation a

Positional behavior and vertebral morphology in atelines and cebines.

Atelines are of particular interest to primate evolutionary studies because they converge with hominoids in postcranial anatomy, including the vertebral column. Currently, our understanding of ateline vertebral morphology is limited to mainly qualitative descriptions and functional interpretations based on general categories of positional behavior. Even less is known about the vertebrae of other platyrrhines. This study more closely examines vertebral form and function in atelines and cebines by combining direct field observations of axial postures and movements, assessments of spinal loading

Ultrastructural evidence of repair and neuronal survival after labyrinthectomy in the squirrel monkey.

Although the vestibular and cochlear branches of the VIIIth cranial nerve originate embryologically from the same primordia, results of the present investigation confirm previous findings indicating that the vestibular branch may be more plastic with respect to recovery after surgical insult than the cochlear division. In this report we show ultrastructural details of changes undergone by the vestibular nerve after surgery. Dendrites peripheral to the vestibular nerve ganglion (VNG) were severed by surgically removing the vestibular end organs; the squirrel monkeys were then allowed to recuper

Calicivirus isolation from three species of primates: an incidental finding.

Calicivirus isolations were made from 3 species of subhuman primates. Viruses were recovered from gingival lesions associated with periodontal disease in a spider monkey, from the oropharynx of a healthy silver leaf langur, and from the spleen of a lowland gorilla that had died of systemic coccidioidomycosis. Based on the results of cross-neutralization tests, all 3 isolates were serologically indistinguishable from a primate calicivirus Pan paniscus type 1. These isolations appeared to be incidental in nature and could not be associated causally with any specific disease entity.
