Cefixime is quickly establishing in Western countries as a potent broad-spectrum antibiotic with a variety of indications. A multinational, nonrandomized study in Central and Eastern Europe has confirmed the excellent efficacy of cefixime in both children and adults. Cefixime (CFIX) was evaluated clinically in pediatric respiratory tract infections, particularly those caused by Haemophilus influenzae: 1. Cefixim belongs to oral cephalosporins of the third generation and has the longest half-life period among all oral cephalosporins and, therefore can be taken once a day. Moreover, cefixim presents in high concentrations in the urine, kidneys and urinary tract. In vitro, this drug has high activity against basic pathogens of urogenital infection. A randomized clinical trial has found that cefixim has higher clinical and microbiological efficacy than ciprofloxacin in patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis.

An audit of the efficacy treatment of pharyngeal gonorrhoea with a single oral dose of 400 mg of cefixime was undertaken; 83% of patients also received a single oral dose of azithromycin to treat possible concurrent anogenital chlamydial infection. Of the 54 patients studied, only one of 45 patients who attended for at least one test of cure had a positive culture seven days after treatment; the possibility of reinfection could not have been excluded. Two tests of cure were obtained from 18 patients. Cefixime, therefore, seems to be effective in the treatment of pharyngeal gonorrhoea.

Emergence of multi-resistant strains of Salmonella typhi is a major problem in treatment of typhoid fever and requires an excessive hospitalization period.
