Clinical trials of cefprozil for treatment of skin and skin-structure infections: review.

Limitations of currently used antimicrobial agents for the treatment of skin and skin-structure infections (e.g., increased resistance to penicillin and erythromycin and inconvenient dosing schedules) have led to an adjustment in the kinds of antimicrobial agents prescribed for these diseases. Three recently completed clinical studies have demonstrated some therapeutic advantages of cefprozil, a new broad-spectrum oral cephalosporin, over cefaclor and erythromycin in the treatment of skin and skin-structure infections. Specifically, cefprozil offers clinical efficacy equivalent to those of cef

Effect of antimicrobial therapy with amoxicillin and cefprozil on bacterial interference and beta-lactamase production in the adenoids.

To compare the effects on the bacterial flora of the adenoids of antimicrobial therapy with amoxicillin or cefprozil, we enrolled in a prospective randomized study 60 children scheduled for elective adenoidectomy because of recurrent otitis media. They were randomized before surgery into 3 groups of 20 patients each: a no-therapy group, and groups with 10 days of either amoxicillin or cefprozil therapy. Core adenoid materials were quantitatively cultured for aerobic and facultative bacteria. The in vitro ability of alpha-hemolytic streptococci (AHS) to inhibit the growth of non-type B Haemophi

Antibacterial activity of cefpodoxime in comparison with cefixime, cefdinir, cefetamet, ceftibuten, loracarbef, cefprozil, BAY 3522, cefuroxime, cefaclor and cefadroxil.

The new oral cephalosporins cefpodoxime, cefixime, cefdinir, cefetamet and ceftibuten demonstrate enhanced activity against Enterobacteriaceae susceptible to the established compounds as well (e.g. cefuroxime, cefaclor, cefadroxil). In addition, cefpodoxime, cefixime, cefdinir, cefetamet and ceftibuten include in their spectrum species hitherto resistant to oral cephalosporins (Proteus vulgaris, Providencia spp., Yersinia enterocolitica). Besides, the majority of these compounds demonstrate relevant activity (MIC50 equal to or below 2 mg/l) against Enterobacter spp., Citrobacter freundii, Serr
