BACKGROUND: Visceral artery aneurysms have an array of presentations and management strategies. Pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysms (PDAAs) are rare, potentially lethal, and necessitate treatment. We present the case of a PDAA in a patient with a congenitally hypoplastic celiac artery treated by open surgical reconstruction.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old female presented with an incidental 2-cm proximal inferior PDAA. Significantly, her celiac trunk was hypoplastic and all flow to the hepatic, gastric, and splenic arteries stemmed from a dilated superior mesenteric artery. The PDAA was located

Celiac artery aneurysms are rare vascular lesions and represent 4% of all splanchnic aneurysms. Media degeneration and atherosclerosis are the most common underlying etiologic factors. The risk of rupture and the associated mortality rate are 13% and 40% respectively. In contrast, elective repair carries a low mortality rate of 5%. Most of celiac artery aneurysms are asymptomatic and in the past nearly 80% of the cases were diagnosed when ruptured. Recently, there is an increased recognition of all splanchnic aneurysm types, probably because of better diagnostic techniques. We report a case of

ObjectivesThe goal of this study was to document the natural history of celiac artery aneurysms (CAAs).BackgroundCeliac artery aneurysms are rare. Existing literature is skewed towards outcomes after intervention of large, symptomatic aneurysms but the behavior of untreated CAAs is poorly understood.MethodsThis is a single institution, retrospective analysis of patients with CAA diagnosed by CT imaging (2015-2019) identified through an institutional radiology database. Radiologic, demographic, and follow-up data were analyzed. The primary endpoint was the mean growth rate of CAAs.ResultsOf the

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is rarely complicated by celiac artery dissection. Dissection of the aorta and its major branches should be carefully differentiated in ADPKD patients with acute-onset abdominal pain.

Celiac artery compression syndrome (CACS), also known as median arcuate ligament syndrome, celiac axis syndrome, and Dunbar Syndrome, is a rare disorder that results from compression of the celiac artery by the median arcuate ligament. The following is a case that depicts an interesting presentation of a patient diagnosed with this rare condition. A 44-year-old male with a history of mutism was brought in by his family for weight loss of 100 lbs with intermittent abdominal pain, weakness and lethargy over a period of five years. His family reported that he had poor nutritional intake, and coul

Compression of the celiac artery by a tight arcuate ligament of the diaphragm is a rare syndrome that can arise after correction of severe kyphosis. Symptoms include abdominal pain and ileus and liver dysfunctions. These symptoms can be easily attributed to more common causes like the superior mesenteric artery syndrome, and a delay in the diagnosis of celiac artery obstruction may result in severe ischemic disease of the gastrointestinal tract. We present a case of celiac artery syndrome after correction of a kyphoscoliosis with severe sequelae that has not been documented before.

INTRODUCTION: The use of endovascular technology for mesenteric interventions has become an increasingly accepted treatment modality. We present an unusual case of celiac artery stent placement for coronary ischemia.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 66-year-old male with a history most notable for coronary artery disease and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) x 3 utilizing left internal mammary artery to left anterior descending, radial artery to first diagonal and his right gastroepiploic artery (GEA) to posterior descending artery presented with chest pain. His work-up included a cardiac catheteriza

Ruptured celiac artery aneurysm is a rare cause for epigastric pain and is usually detected incidentally. Atypical presentation with postemetic epigastralgia and pleural effusion usually leads physicians to make the diagnosis of Boerhaave syndrome. Herein, we report a 32-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Boerhaave syndrome initially after presenting with acute postemetic epigastralgia and predominant left side pleural effusion. Diagnostic left thoracentesis yielded bloody fluid with similar amylase level to serum. The chest computed tomographic scan showed no evidence of esophageal rupture

Aneurysms of the pancreaticoduodenal artery are rare and may be associated with celiac artery stenosis or occlusion. Twenty-eight patients are reported in the literature. The diagnostic findings and therapeutic alternatives of four additional patients form the basis of this report. One patient with ruptured pancreaticoduodenal aneurysm was successfully treated by transcatheter embolization, and one patient was treated surgically; both patients had an uneventful recovery. In the remaining two patients, the aneurysms were left untreated. One patient died 1 year later of an unrelated cause, and t

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous isolated celiac artery dissection (SICAD) is uncommon, with very few series reported in the literature. The present study aims to describe the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with SICAD treated at a single Chilean institution over 20 years.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients from a single academic hospital with SICAD diagnosed between January 2003 and March 2023 was performed. Conservative treatment included antiplatelets, anticoagulation, or both. The normal size of a celiac artery in our population was 7.9 ± 0.79 mm in females

Mesenteric vascular thrombosis, typically of the superior mesenteric artery, is a frequent occurrence in patients with hypercoagulable conditions. Isolated involvement of the celiac artery is rare. Patients with celiac artery thrombosis can present with an acute abdomen or occasionally with acid peptic symptoms. A delay in diagnosis is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. We present a rare case of splenic infarction with celiac trunk thrombosis in a 54-year-old patient with underlying antiphospholipid (APLA) syndrome who presented with epigastric pain that was mistaken for sy

Abdominal pain is a very common presentation in the accident and emergency department. However, vasculitis is not the usual first differential diagnosis. This paper discusses a case of polyarteritis nodosa presenting with acute abdominal pain alone. Common surgical conditions were obviously considered, but they were not found to cause the patient's problems. We describe how investigations led to this diagnosis discussed in detail in this paper. It is important to remember that prompt recognition of unusual life-threatening conditions can lead to timely intervention.

Median arcuate ligament (MAL) syndrome or celiac artery compression occurs secondary to diaphragmatic compression of the celiac artery and the corresponding neural structures of the celiac plexus. Typically, patients present with postprandial abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. Diagnostically, various radiologic studies are used to document impingement of the celiac artery including ultrasound, computed tomography, aortograms, and magnetic resonance imaging. Historically, open approaches to the aorta and the celiac artery are performed to release the MAL and relieve compression

Celiac compression is usually a benign condition, but when surgery necessitates division of collaterals from the superior mesenteric artery, it may cause life-threatening gut ischemia. We report a case of cholangiocarcinoma necessitating pancreaticoduodenectomy in a patient with celiac artery compression by the median arcuate ligament. Preoperative duplex scanning confirmed the celiac stenosis and revealed retrograde flow through collaterals from the superior mesenteric artery. Intraoperative continuous wave Doppler examination revealed that gastric blood flow disappeared with compression of t

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to better define the clinical relevance of aneurysms affecting collateral vessels in patients with celiac artery (CA) occlusive disease.
METHODS: True pancreaticoduodenal artery (PDA) and gastroduodenal artery (GDA) aneurysms associated with CA stenoses or occlusions reported from 1970 to 2010 in the English literature and similar cases treated at the University of Michigan were reviewed. Clinical presentations and differing treatment modalities were documented and analyzed.
RESULTS: One hundred twenty-five patients having CA occlusive disease exhibit

Celiac artery compression syndrome is not frequent in the pediatric population. The syndrome may entail long-standing abdominal pain, recurrent vomiting, bloating, weight loss, and an abdominal bruit, which in the case of our patient, was an incidental finding. Notably, patients may be asymptomatic. Our patient is a 16-year-old male who presented with concerns about multiple, non-tender chest lymph nodes lasting for two weeks. He had also lost 80 lbs. over one year. On examination, however, an abdominal bruit was discovered, and a diagnostic workup was significant for celiac artery compressio

We present a case of combined celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery embolism in a 70-year-old patient that was examined in emergency department for atrial fibrillation and diffuse abdominal pain. Standard abdominal x-ray showed air in the portal vein. CT scan with contrast showed air in the lumen of the stomach and small intestine, bowel distension with wall thickening, and a free gallstone in the abdominal cavity. Massive embolism of both celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery was seen after contrast administration. On laparotomy, complete necrosis of the liver, spleen, stomach and s

OBJECTIVE: Successful thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) requires adequate proximal and distal fixation and seal. We report our experience of planned celiac artery coverage during endovascular repair of complex thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA).
METHODS: Since 2004, 228 patients underwent TEVAR under elective (n=162, 71%) and emergent circumstances (66, 29%). Patients with inadequate distal stent grafts landing zones during TEVAR underwent detailed evaluation of the gastroduodenal arcade with communicating collaterals between the celiac and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) by compute
