Multicenter evaluation of a new recombinant enzyme immunoassay for the combined detection of antibody to HIV-1 and HIV-2.

A newly developed recombinant antigen-based anti-HIV-1/HIV-2 enzyme immunoassay (Abbott Recombinant HIV-1/HIV-2 EIA) was evaluated against a second generation anti-HIV-1 EIA (Abbott Recombinant HIV-1 EIA). Five thousand and twenty-nine sera from European blood donors and 403 sera from central African blood donors were used in the evaluation, along with four panels and one cohort. The panels included 99 'problem' sera, 733 sera with antibodies to HIV-1 from asymptomatic people and from patients at different disease stages, 25 serial bleeds from five plasmapheresis donors seroconverting for anti

Relative lower extremity length in Mexican American and in American black and white youth.

Stature, sitting height, estimated leg (subischial) length and the sitting height/stature ratio are compared in Mexican American, American White and American Black boys 9 through 14 years of age and girls 12 through 17 years of age. Mexican American youth are shorter in stature and have absolutely shorter lower extremities. The sitting height of Mexican American youth is similar to that of Black youth and shorter than that of White youth. The sitting height/stature ratio is virtually identical in Mexican American and White youth, indicating similar proportions of lower extremities to stature.

How people use the peat swamp forests of the central Congo Basin.

The central Congo Basin peatlands span 167 600 km2 and are the world's largest tropical peatlands. Hundreds of thousands of people live in the vicinity of the peatlands, but studies of how people use the peatlands do not, to our knowledge, exist. This article investigates people's use of peat swamp forests in three study sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of the Congo. Using participatory methods, we interviewed 407 people and learned that 100% of households use the peat swamp forest for fishing. Therefore, the peatlands are essential to people's well-being and health a

Ebola Virus Diseases in Africa: a commentary on its history, local and global context.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) started as a minor infection in Uganda in 1974 and has been frequent in Central Africa Region for the past 40 years. For over 40 years, Ebola was treated as an African disease, called a fever and known by other names where occurrences have been frequent. EVD has become a global public health threat following the most recent outbreak in West Africa. By December 31, 2014, Ebola has infected more than 23,500 people in West Africa and killed over 9,500, nearly all in the three worst-affected countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. It is transmitted through blood, v

Coxiella burnetii infection among subjects infected with HIV type 1 in the Central African Republic.

Sixty-six sera from HIV-1-seropositive adult African subjects and 49 sera from HIV-seronegative age and sex matched healthy African controls living in Bangui, Central African Republic, were screened for Coxiella burnetii antibody by an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test. 16.7% of HIV-infected patients and 16.3% of the HIV-negative controls had positive IgG titres, with no significant difference between the two groups. Two of the seven HIV-infected patients seropositive for Coxiella burnetii for whom clinical data was available had a medical history compatible with symptomatic Q fever. Th

Genetic Research on Cardiac Channelopathies in African and African-Descent Populations: A Scoping Review.

Cardiac channelopathies are inherited arrhythmias that can lead to sudden cardiac death. Despite Africa's extensive genomic diversity, African and African-descent populations remain underrepresented in genetic research, creating gaps in variant interpretation and clinical care. This scoping review aims to map the extent, range, and nature of genetic research on cardiac channelopathies in these populations and to identify key geographic, thematic, and methodological gaps. Using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology and the Population-Concept-Context framework, systematic search

Race: a risk factor for dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Cuban DHF/DSS outbreaks have provided evidence of a reduced risk of people of Negroid race for DHF/DSS compared to those of Caucasoid race. These observations from Cuban dengue outbreaks have significant epidemiological interest, as the differences in susceptibility to DHF/DSS among racial groups in Cuba coincide with that reported in African and Black Caribbean populations. In this article, we review the literature on race as a risk factor for DHF/DSS and discuss recent results from ongoing studies. Taking into consideration the origins of contemporary Cuban inhabitants, we propose that the C

Reaching the 100 by 2027 target for universal access to rapid molecular diagnostic tests for tuberculosis in Africa: In-sight but out of reach.

Although WHO recommended rapid molecular diagnostic tools for TB over a decade ago, only about one-third of diagnostic sites in high burden countries have access to them. We conducted a mixed-methods study to understand the barriers and facilitators to reaching universal access to WHO-recommended rapid molecular diagnostics (WRDs) in a selection of African countries. Data for 24 African countries were sourced from the WHO Global TB database to evaluate the proportion of notified people with TB tested with a WRD between 2018 and 2023, and to assess access to WRDs as defined in the WHO Diagnosti

Physical Strength Is Not Associated With Facial Sexual Dimorphism and Asymmetry in Either Czechs or Cameroonians.

OBJECTIVES: Handgrip strength is a widely used indicator of muscle strength and general health, but its association with facial morphology remains unclear. This study examined whether handgrip strength or its asymmetry is related to facial sexual shape dimorphism, perceived masculinity/femininity, and facial asymmetry in two culturally and genetically distinct populations: Cameroonian and Czech adults. METHODS: Geometric morphometric methods were applied to full-face portraits of 226 individuals (balanced by sex, aged 19-59), using 72 facial landmarks and semi-landmarks. Pearson correlations

Sub-Saharan African Immigrants Living in the United States Maintain Healthy Diets Despite Dietary Acculturation: A Scoping Review.

The objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review and synthesize current evidence that examines post-immigration diets among adult and adolescent Sub-Saharan African people who have immigrated to the United States (US). In September 2022, PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus databases were searched for studies published between 2000 and 2022. A total of 3,388 articles were found. After title, abstract, and full-text review, 31 articles were included in this review. A total of 24 articles reported on overall diet (incl. dietary quality, healthy diet, alcohol, and food security); 3 articles repo

[Demonstration of Cryptococcus neoformans in a fatal meningeal disease in the Congo].

Cryptococcus neoformans, mainly widespread in Occidental Europe, America and South East of Asia, was rarely described in African pathology. In Central Africa, it was isolated several times in Zaïre. All reported cases concern young people and present no associated pathology. A first fatal case, looking like an acute meningitis, was described in 1959, in a 18 years old Congolese girl. This second case discovered in Brazzaville in a 37 years old young man was a fatal encephalitis after a primary pneumopathy.

Chikungunya (CHIK),a mosquito borne debilitating disease,is caused by CHIK virus,an alphavirus belonging to the family Togaviridae. The sudden onset of very high fever along with rash, and severe arthralgia especially in the small joints of hands and toes are the characteristics of the disease. It was first reported from Tanzania in 1952-53 and spread subsequently to sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and Pacific causing large epidemics. The virus exists in three genotypes, the Asian, West African and East Central South African that are responsible for outbreaks in the respective areas. The fir

Associations of variations in alcohol dehydrogenase genes with the level of response to alcohol in non-Asians.

BACKGROUND: Risk and protective factors for alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are complex and reflect both environmental and genetic factors. Genetic components account for about 50% of the variation and influence several phenotypes, including the level of response (LR) to alcohol as well as alcohol-metabolizing enzyme polymorphisms. Variations in the ADH1B and ADH1C genes may influence the LR to alcohol by increasing levels of acetaldehyde during alcohol metabolism, although most data on this question come from Asian populations. METHODS: This study evaluated associations of ADH1B and ADH1C genot

Genetic landscape and functional exploration of kidney cancer predisposition in cross-ancestral populations.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer, but its genetic architecture has not been fully characterized, particularly in Asian populations. Here, we perform a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of 33,712 RCC cases and 845,786 controls, including individuals of East Asian (5,313 cases and 96,912 controls), European (25,890 cases and 743,585 controls), African American (897 cases and 3,109 controls), and Latin American ancestry (1,612 cases and 2,180 controls), which unveils 10 novel RCC-associated loci and a Chinese-specific locus at 12p13.33. Religious coping and hospital admissions among adults with sickle cell disease.

Although a well-established literature implicates religiosity as a central element of the African American experience, little is known about how individuals from this group utilize religion to cope with specific health-related stressors. The present study examined the relation between religious coping and hospital admissions among a cohort of 95 adults with sickle cell disease-a genetic blood disorder that, in the United States, primarily affects people of African ancestry. Multiple regression analyses indicated that positive religious coping uniquely accounted for variance in hospital admissi

Mpox virus Clade IIb detection in the air.

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease endemic in Central and West Africa that is caused by the Mpox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus and Poxviridae family. The clinical manifestations of mpox infection are milder than those of smallpox, and the incubation time of mpox varies from 5 to 21 days. Since May 2022, the mpox outbreak (formerly known as monkeypox) has suddenly and unexpectedly spread in non-endemic countries, suggesting that there may have been some undetected transmissions. Based on molecular analysis, there are two major genetic clades that represent the mpox virus: Clade

Bantu beta s cluster haplotype predominates among Brazilian blacks.

We describe the combination of polymorphic restriction-enzyme sites in the beta globin gene cluster (haplotypes) for 74 chromosomes from Brazilian Blacks bearing the sickle hemoglobin gene (beta s). The three most common African beta s haplotypes account for 67 chromosomes: 49/74 (66.2%) were identified as Central African Republic (CAR or Bantu) type, 17 (23.0%) as Benin, and one as Senegal; seven chromosomes (9.5%) had minor atypical haplotypes. This distribution is different from that observed in the United States or Jamaica, where the Benin haplotype predominates, and results from different

[Sociocultural aspects of albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa: mutilations and ritual murders committed in east Africa (Burundi and Tanzania)].

This report presents an overview of the many sociocultural prejudices confronting albinos and their parents in Sub-Saharan Africa at each stage of life (infancy, adolescence, and adulthood). The birth of an albino child to two black parents has always been an enigma for African peoples. French-speaking and English-speaking populations in Central, East and South African countries have invented numerous myths to account for this event. Albinos are believed to possess good and evil magical powers. On the white magic side, some organs are believed to confer luck, health, and prosperity. For this r
