Elimination of Rhodnius prolixus in Central America.

Rhodnius prolixus is one of the main vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. In Central America, it was first discovered in 1915 in El Salvador, from where it spread northwest to Guatemala and Mexico, and southeast to Nicaragua and Costa Rica, arriving also in Honduras in the late 1950s. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) by the antimalaria services of Costa Rica prevented its spread southwards, and similar IRS programmes appear to have eliminated it from El Salvador by the late 1970s. In 1997, by resolution of the Ministers of Health of the seven Central American countrie

Psoriatic arthritis in South and Central America.

Psoriasis and its related manifestations, including psoriatic arthritis, are prevalent disorders in the Western world, particularly among Caucasians. The study of these disorders in Latin America lags way behind the study of other more common rheumatic disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. From the scarce evidence available, however, it appears that the prevalence and incidence of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are lower than in other parts of the Western world and almost negligible among natives from the Andean region, although confirmatory epidemiologic

Treatment of Onchocerciasis with ivermectin in Central America.

The success o f ivermectin in controlling transmission of Onchocerca volvulus in Guatemala suggests a broader role for this drug than morbidity control alone. In this article Ed Cupp reviews recent findings from a three-year pilot study in that country which evaluated the effects of recurrent semiannual treatment on several important factors associated with the biology o f river blindness. These results illustrate the range o f beneficial effects that occur not only for this disease but for other parasitisms when this drug is administered at the community level.

Cutaneous myiasis in visitors to Central America.

Six cases of cutaneous myiasis occurred in three groups of visitors to Guatemala between February and May 1978. Attack rates ranged from 12% to 50%. Furuncular lesions were generally multiple and involved both exposed and usually unexposed areas of the body. Parasitic fly larvae recovered from two patients were identified as the botfly, Dermatobia hominis. Botfly infestation is endemic in areas of Central and South America and is acquired indirectly through the bite of carrier arthropods, including mosquitoes. Although reports of cases in North Americans visting endemic areas are rare, the con

Outcome of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Central America: A report of the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology of Central America (AHOPCA).

BACKGROUND: Treating B-non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) in lower-income countries is challenging because of imprecise diagnosis, the increased risk of fatal toxicity associated with advanced disease at presentation, and limited supportive care. PROCEDURE: Central American patients with newly diagnosed stage I or II B-NHL received a modified Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) regimen including a prephase (prednisone, cyclophosphamide) followed by A/B/A courses (A: cytarabine, dexamethasone, etoposide, ifosfamide, methotrexate, and intrathecal therapy; B: cyclophosphamide, dexamethasone, doxorubicin, m

Gastric cancer in Central America: a scoping review.

Stomach cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Central Latin America and the fifth most common cancer by incident in the region. Understanding the epidemiology of stomach cancer is crucial to the appropriate planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive cancer control programs. The objective of this scoping review was to quantify the population-based incidence of stomach cancer in Central America from available data, identify reported risk factors, presentation and oncologic stage and explore the frequency of treatment used and survival outcomes for stomac

Stomach cancer burden in Central and South America.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Stomach cancer mortality rates in Central and South America (CSA) are among the highest in the world. We describe the current burden of stomach cancer in CSA. METHODS: We obtained regional and national-level cancer incidence data from 48 population-based registries (13 countries) and nation-wide cancer deaths from WHO's mortality database (18 countries). We estimated world population age-standardized incidence (ASR) and mortality (ASMR) rates per 100,000 and estimated annual percent change to describe time trends. RESULTS: Stomach cancer was among the 5 most frequent

Coughing and fever after surfing in Central America.

We report the case of a 19-year-old surfer, returning from Central America, who presented with chronic cough. The X-ray and full blood count, which had been performed in Costa Rica, were without pathology; laboratory parameters showed slightly increased C-reactive protein (59 mg/l). Malaria was excluded by thick smear. Immune serological tests for typhus, paratyphus, brucellosis, rickettsioses, leptospirosis and dengue fever were negative. An ambulant antimicrobial treatment was without any clinical effect. A computer tomography of the thorax showed a solid lesion (30 × 20 mm, middle lobe of t

Hodgkin lymphoma burden in Central and South America.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is largely curable owing to improvements in treatment since the 1960s; nevertheless, high mortality rates have been reported in Central and South America. We describe the current burden of HL in the Central and South American region. METHODS: We obtained regional- and national-level incidence data from 48 population-based cancer registries in 13 countries, and national-level mortality data from the WHO mortality database for 18 countries. Current situation of Chagas disease in Central America.

Chagas disease in Central America is known since 1913 when the first human case was reported in El Salvador. The other Central American countries reported their first cases between 1933 and 1967. On October 1997 was launched the Central American Initiative for Chagas Disease Control (IPCA). The objectives of this sub-regional Initiative are: (1) the elimination of Rhodnius prolixus in Central America; (2) the reduction of the domiciliary infestation of Triatoma dimidiata; and (3) the elimination of the transfusion transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi. Significant advancements being close to the e

Survey for intestinal parasites in Belize, Central America.

A stool survey was carried out in 5 villages in the Toledo district of the Central American country of Belize. Eighty-two percent of a total population of 672 participated. The stools were examined by the formalin-ethyl-acetate concentration technique. Sixty-six percent of the population was found to have one or more intestinal parasites. The most common infection was hookworm (55%) followed by Ascaris lumbricoides (30%), Entamoeba coli (21%), Trichuris trichiura (19%), Giardia lamblia (12%), Iodamoeba beutschlii (9%), and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (6%). Other parasites found were Entamoeba

Subgingival microbiota of indigenous Indians of Central America.

OBJECTIVE: To define the subgingival microbial profiles of adult subjects from a previously identified rural community of indigenous Indians in Guatemala, Central America. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A full-mouth periodontal examination was performed in 114 adult subjects from 45 families. Plaque samples were collected from both deep and shallow periodontal pockets and checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization was employed to identify 17 species previously associated with periodontitis or health. RESULTS: Plaque deposits and gingivitis were universal and widespread, and periodontal pocketing > or =5 mm

Epidemiology of babesiosis and anaplasmosis in South and Central America.

Babesiosis (Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale) affect native cattle from Uruguay and northern Argentina to Guatemala. The distribution of Babesia follows the dissemination of the tick vector. Seroepidemiological studies showed that enzootic instability exist in herds in several areas of the region. However, clinical cases occurred less frequently than expected. The babesial tick infection rate is related to the vector abundance which in turn is regulated by climate. Bos indicus cattle, because of tick resistance, are less likely to be infected by the vec

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is a rare neoplasm yet it is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract and its prognosis is poor.
