Feedback control of variability in the cycle period of a central pattern generator.

We address how feedback to a bursting biological pacemaker with intrinsic variability in cycle length can affect that variability. Specifically, we examine a hybrid circuit constructed of an isolated crab anterior burster (AB)/pyloric dilator (PD) pyloric pacemaker receiving virtual feedback via dynamic clamp. This virtual feedback generates artificial synaptic input to PD with timing determined by adjustable phase response dynamics that mimic average burst intervals generated by the lateral pyloric neuron (LP) in the intact pyloric network. Using this system, we measure network period variabi

The contribution of a central pattern generator in a reflex-based neuromuscular model.

Although the concept of central pattern generators (CPGs) controlling locomotion in vertebrates is widely accepted, the presence of specialized CPGs in human locomotion is still a matter of debate. An interesting numerical model developed in the 90s' demonstrated the important role CPGs could play in human locomotion, both in terms of stability against perturbations, and in terms of speed control. Recently, a reflex-based neuro-musculo-skeletal model has been proposed, showing a level of stability to perturbations similar to the previous model, without any CPG components. Although exhibiting s

Topology selection by chaotic neurons of a pyloric central pattern generator.

The pyloric Central Pattern Generator (CPG) in the lobster has an architecture in which every neuron receives at least one connection from another member of the CPG. We call this a "non-open" network topology. An "open" topology, where at least one neuron does not receive synapses from any other CPG member, is found neither in the pyloric nor in the gastric mill CPG. Here we investigate a possible reason for this topological structure using the ability to perform a biologically functional task as a measure of the efficacy of the network. When the CPG is composed of model neurons that exhibit r

Cholecystokinin-like peptide is a modulator of a crustacean central pattern generator.

The presence, release, and physiological effects of a cholecystokinin(CCK)-like peptide within the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of the lobster, Panulirus interruptus, are described. Indirect immunofluorescence with 2 antisera raised against CCK8 was used to determine the distribution of CCK-like immunoreactivity (CCKLI) in the stomatogastric nervous system. CCKLI was demonstrated in the input nerve and the neuropil of the STG and in neuropil and somata in the commissural ganglia (CGs), brain, and eyestalks. None of the somata within the STG displayed CCKLI. The cross-reactivities of the CCK a

Peripheral influences on the central pattern-rhythm generator for tongue movements in the rat.

Rhythmic activity in the tongue and other oral muscles was evoked by mechanical stimulation of the hard palate in ketamine-anaesthetized rats. The relation between neural discharges of single hypoglossal motoneurones and activity in the masseter and anterior digastric muscle, and stimulus parameters was analysed. By varying the stimulus parameters, hypoglossal-motoneurone activity was modulated from phasic reflex activity into rhythmic activity. The tongue and other recorded muscles are likely to be controlled by the same pattern-rhythm generator, when rhythmic activity is induced by palatal s

Bio-Inspired Central Pattern Generator for Adaptive Gait Generation and Stability in Humanoid Robots on Sloped Surfaces.

Existing research has preliminarily achieved stable walking in humanoid robots; however, natural human-like leg motion and adaptive capabilities in dynamic environments remain unattained. This paper proposes a bionic central pattern generator (CPG) gait generation method based on Kimura neurons. The method maps the CPG output to the spatial motion patterns of the robot's center of mass (CoM) and foot trajectory, modulated by 22 undetermined parameters. To address the vague physical interpretation of CPG parameters, the strong neuronal coupling, and the difficulty of decoupling, this research s

Neural Control of Mastication: Ion-Channel Mechanisms in the Brainstem Central Pattern Generator.

Mastication is a fundamental rhythmic motor behavior controlled by a brainstem central pattern generator (CPG) located within the pontine and medullary reticular formations. Coordinated activation of jaw-opening and jaw-closing muscles is generated by this network and continuously refined through sensory feedback from periodontal mechanoreceptors and muscle spindles, together with descending inputs from the cortical masticatory area (CMA), basal ganglia, and cerebellum. Thus, mastication is regulated by distributed neural circuits rather than a single central locus. At the cellular level, the

Central pattern generator and human locomotion in the context of referent control of motor actions.

Unperturbed human locomotion presumably results from feedforward shifts in stable body equilibrium in the environment, thus avoiding falling and subsequent catching considered in alternative theories of locomotion. Such shifts are achieved by relocation of the referent body configuration at which multiple muscle recruitment begins. Rather than being directly specified by a central pattern generator, multiple muscles are activated depending on the extent to which the body is deflected from the referent, threshold body configuration, as confirmed in previous studies. Based on the referent contro

[Toward a metabolic approach of the central pattern generator concept in a spinal rat model].

It has been shown that the onset of a central nervous system lesion in the rat results in morphological modifications of the peripheral nerves and the underlying neuromuscular junctions, without suggesting a functional correlation between recuperation of motor functions and sublesional metabolic activity. Using double lesion localization (T2 and T6) in a spinal rat model has nevertheless pointed out the functional importance of the T2-T6 metameric interval in the reinnervation phenomena observed, raising the problem of spinal generation in locomotor movements. Motivated by electrophysiological

Central pattern generation involved in oral and respiratory control for feeding in the term infant.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Drinking and eating are essential skills for survival and benefit from the coordination of several pattern generating networks and their musculoskeletal effectors to achieve safe swallows. Oralpharyngoesophageal motility develops during infancy and early childhood, and is influenced by various factors, including neuromuscular maturation, dietary and postural habits, arousal state, ongoing illnesses, congenital anomalies, and the effects of medical or surgical interventions. Gastroesophageal reflux is frequent in neonates and infants, and its role in neonatal morbidity includ

A cerebral central pattern generator in Aplysia and its connections with buccal feeding circuitry.

Different feeding-related behaviors in Aplysia require substantial variations in the coordination of movements of two separate body parts, the lips and buccal mass. The central pattern generators (CPGs) and motoneurons that control buccal mass movements reside largely in the buccal ganglion. It was previously thought that control of the cerebral neuronal circuitry and motoneurons that generate lip movements was coordinated directly by feedback from buccal interneurons. Here, we describe cerebral lip motoneuron C15, which drives rhythmic activity in the isolated cerebral ganglion. Other lip mot

The central autonomic nervous system: conscious visceral perception and autonomic pattern generation.

The overall organization of the peripheral autonomic nervous system has been known for many decades, but the mechanisms by which it is controlled by the central nervous system are just now coming to light. In particular, two major issues have seen considerable progress in the past decade. First, the pathways that provide visceral sensation to conscious perception at a cortical level have been elucidated in both animals and humans. The nociceptive system runs in parallel to the pathways carrying visceral sensation from the cranial nerves and may be considered in itself a component of visceral s

Neuromodulation of the crab pyloric central pattern generator by serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive afferents.

In the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab, Cancer borealis, a set of 4 serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive neurons, called gastropyloric receptor (GPR) cells, have effects on the pyloric motor pattern. In a semi-intact foregut preparation, the GPR cells are not activated by movements of the pyloric filter; instead they respond to the slower movements of the gastric mill (Katz et al., 1989). Thus, their activity is not synchronized to the pyloric motor pattern. However, when the GPR cells are stimulated in an in vitro preparation in a manner that resembles their normal firing pattern

Suppressive control of a rhythmic central pattern generator by an identified modulatory neuron in crustacea.

The activity of the 14 neuron network which organizes the pyloric motor rhythm in the stomatogastric ganglion of the lobster, Homarus gammarus, is controlled by neuromodulatory inputs which have been described as having mainly 'permissive' effects. By contrast, here we identify a neuron, the pyloric suppressor (PS) neuron which exerts a 'suppressive' effect on the pyloric activity. We show that PS neuron discharge can terminate in a long-lasting manner, spontaneous pyloric rhythmic activity. Its effect results from a direct suppression of the endogenous ability of the pyloric pacemaker neurons

Mechanisms underlying the generation of autonomorespiratory coupling amongst the respiratory central pattern generator, sympathetic oscillators, and cardiovagal premotoneurons.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The respiratory rhythm and pattern and sympathetic and parasympathetic outflows are generated by distinct, though overlapping, propriobulbar arrays of neuronal microcircuit oscillators constituting networks utilizing mutual excitatory and inhibitory neuronal interactions, residing principally within the metencephalon and myelencephalon, and modulated by synaptic influences from the cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebellum, and mesencephalon and ascending influences deriving from peripheral stimuli relayed by cranial nerve afferent axons. Though the respiratory and cardiovascular regulatory

Rare phenomena of central rhythm and pattern generation in a case of complete spinal cord injury.

Lumbar central pattern generators (CPGs) control the basic rhythm and coordinate muscle activation underlying hindlimb locomotion in quadrupedal mammals. The existence and function of CPGs in humans have remained controversial. Here, we investigated a case of a male individual with complete thoracic spinal cord injury who presented with a rare form of self-sustained rhythmic spinal myoclonus in the legs and rhythmic activities induced by epidural electrical stimulation (EES). Analysis of muscle activation patterns suggested that the myoclonus tapped into spinal circuits that generate muscle sp

Differential expression and targeting of K+ channel genes in the lobster pyloric central pattern generator.

A molecular analysis of motor pattern generation is an essential complement to electrophysiological and computational investigations. In arthropods, A-channels are posttranslationally modified multimeric proteins containing Shaker family alpha-subunits that may interact with beta-subunits, gamma-subunits, and other auxiliary proteins. One consequence of A-channel structure is that several mechanisms could underlie the cell-specific differences in pyloric IAs including differential gene expression, alternate splicing, and posttranslational modifications. Intersegmental coordination of cockroach locomotion: adaptive control of centrally coupled pattern generator circuits.

Animals' ability to demonstrate both stereotyped and adaptive locomotor behavior is largely dependent on the interplay between centrally generated motor patterns and the sensory inputs that shape them. We utilized a combined experimental and theoretical approach to investigate the relative importance of CPG interconnections vs. intersegmental afferents in the cockroach: an animal that is renowned for rapid and stable locomotion. We simultaneously recorded coxal levator and depressor motor neurons (MN) in the thoracic ganglia of Periplaneta americana, while sensory feedback was completely block
