Haemoproteus tartakovskyi (Haemoproteidae): Complete sporogony in Culicoides nubeculosus (Ceratopogonidae), with implications for avian haemoproteid experimental research.

Numerous recent studies have addressed the molecular characterization, distribution and genetic diversity of Haemoproteus spp. (Haemoproteidae). Some species of these blood parasites cause severe disease in birds, and heavy infections are often lethal in biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) and other blood-sucking insects. However, information about the vectors of haemoproteids is scarce. This presents an obstacle for better understanding the mechanisms of host-parasite interactions and the epidemiology of haemoproteosis. Here we investigated the sporogonic development of Haemoproteus tartakovskyi,

Hidden diversity in Europe: new species and a revised taxonomy of the subgenus Leptoconops (Leptoconops) (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae).

The Ceratopogonidae (Diptera, Nematocera) is a highly diverse family of insects inhabiting a wide range of habitat types that is only absent from polar regions and remote islands. Despite this broad diversity, scientific knowledge of this family remains incomplete, including the genus Leptoconops Skuse, 1889. Although several Leptoconops species have been reported from Europe, no detailed study has yet been conducted to resolve the taxonomy of this genus and clarify species occurrence. Here, the first comprehensive study of Leptoconops diversity in southwest Spain is provided based on extensiv

Habitat associations of Culicoides species (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) abundant on a commercial cervid farm in Florida, USA.

BACKGROUND: Biting midges in the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) transmit bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) to ruminants, thus exerting a significant economic impact on animal agriculture worldwide. However, very little is known about the larval habitat characteristics of Culicoides species associated with BTV/EHDV transmission, particularly in southeastern USA, limiting the establishment of effective midge control strategies. In this study, we examined the habitat associations of Culicoides species abundant on a commercial cervid farm in Florida

Molecular Detection of Filarial and Avian Haemosporidian Parasites in Culicoides Biting Midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Laos.

Species of Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are important biting pests and vectors of pathogens affecting humans and animals. However, information on Culicoides-parasite associations in Laos is lacking. We used molecular methods to screen 237 specimens representing 27 Culicoides species from Laos for filarial nematodes, avian haemosporidians, Trypanosoma spp., and Leishmania spp. Overall, 59 specimens representing 19 Culicoides species were positive for at least one parasite. Only filarial nematodes and avian haemosporidians were detected. Filarial parasites were found in four C

Haemosporidian parasites in Kansas birds: molecular and histological evidence implicating Culicoides haematopotus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in transmission.

Haemosporidian parasites of birds are maintained through complex interactions among vertebrate hosts, arthropod vectors, and the parasites themselves, yet their vector-parasite relationships remain poorly resolved under natural conditions in North America. Haemoproteus species are among the most prevalent avian blood parasites and have been implicated in reduced host fitness and malaria-like disease. Here, we combined molecular and histological approaches to investigate Haemoproteus prevalence in wild birds and to identify potential Culicoides biting midge vectors in Kansas. Blood meals from f

Host Associations Of Biting Midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae: Culicoides) Near Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Locations In Florida, USA.

Quantifying host use is important for understanding transmission of vector-borne pathogens. Despite the importance of biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in pathogen transmission, the vector-host relationships of most Culicoides species are poorly documented, even in locations where active arbovirus surveillance is conducted. Polymerase chain reaction-based blood-meal analysis was performed on 663 blood-engorged Culicoides females collected by 7 Florida mosquito control districts at 24 sentinel chicken arbovirus surveillance sites in 2017. A total of 638 blood meals were successfully anal

Comparative Assessment of Environmental DNA and Bulk-Sample Metabarcoding in Biosecurity Surveillance for Detecting Biting Midges (Ceratopogonidae).

Biting midges, Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), are significant vectors capable of transmitting arboviruses, such as bluetongue virus, to livestock. New Zealand is free of Culicoides, and a national surveillance programme is in place for the early detection of an incursion. Traditionally, insect trap samples from the surveillance programme are analyzed using morphology-based diagnostics under microscopes, which is time-consuming and relies on specialized taxonomic expertise. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of DNA metabarcoding using insect bulk samples and environmental DNA (eDN

Investigation of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in relation to the transmission of bovine Onchocerca and other filariae in central Kyushu, Japan.

In Kyushu, Japan, where a human case of zoonotic onchocerciasis was found, a survey was conducted to know if the bovine Onchocerca species of this region, O. gutturosa, O. lienalis and O. sp., which develop in local Simulium spp., were also transmitted by Culicoides. A total of 17,006 out of 42,582 females of eight Culicoides species captured by light-traps from May to November in 1989 and 1990 at two cattle sheds, one in Oita and one in Kumamoto, were dissected and examine for Onchocerca infection. Overall results showed that none of the species had filarial infections except 4 of 946 C. arak

Profiling of RNA Viruses in Biting Midges (Ceratopogonidae) and Related Diptera from Kenya Using Metagenomics and Metabarcoding Analysis.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) cause enormous health burden worldwide, as they account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases and over 700,000 deaths each year. A significant number of these VBDs are caused by RNA virus pathogens. Here, we used metagenomics and metabarcoding analysis to characterize RNA viruses and their insect hosts among biting midges from Kenya. We identified a total of 15 phylogenetically distinct insect-specific viruses. These viruses fall into six families, with one virus falling in the recently proposed negevirus taxon. The six virus families include Partitiviridae,

Is the morphology of Culicoides intersexes parasitized by mermithid nematodes a parasite adaptation? A morphometric approach to Culicoides circumscriptus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

Mermithidae is a family of endoparasitic nematodes known to cause intersexuality in arthropods. Intersexes of the genus Culicoides parasitized by mermithids have been the object of several studies aiming to describe their particular morphology. Culicoides intersexes are specimens with male genitalia and feminized sexually dimorphic structures, i.e. antennae, mouthparts and wings. To date, these specimens have only been described qualitatively and a quantitative approach supported by statistical analysis is lacking. Here we conduct morphometric analyses of sexually dimorphic structures in a sam

Butox 7.5 pour on: a deltamethrin treatment of sheep and cattle: pilot study of killing effects on Culicoides species (Ceratopogonidae).

Topical treatment (at the neck and along the vertebral column) with deltamethrin (Butox 7.5 pour on) of cattle (30 ml/400-kg body weight) and sheep (10 ml/60-kg body weight) was done to find out, whether the insecticide may reach in a sufficient dosage the legs, which are known to be the main biting site of Culicoides specimens that are the vectors of the recently introduced Bluetongue virus in central Europe. At days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 after treatment, some hair was cut off from the legs--close to the claws. Freshly (the night before) caught Culicoides obsoletus specimens were then exposed

Investigation of RNA Viruses in Culicoides Latreille, 1809 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in a Mining Complex in the Southeastern Region of the Brazilian Amazon.

The biting midges Culicoides Latreille, 1809 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is highly relevant to epidemiology and public health, as it includes species that are potential vectors of human and animal arboviruses. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of RNA viruses in species of the genus Culicoides collected in the Carajás mining complex in the state of Pará. The biting midges were collected in the municipalities of Canaã dos Carajás, Curionópolis and Marabá and morphologically identified. A total of 1139 specimens of seven Culicoides species were grouped into eight pools and subj

Detection of Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania braziliensis in Culicoides (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) in an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Brazilian Amazonia.

Biting midges in the genus Culicoides act as vectors of arboviruses throughout the world and as vectors of filariasis in Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa. Although Culicoides spp. are currently not considered to be vectors of Leishmania protozoa, the high abundance of biting midges in areas with active cutaneous leishmaniasis transmission points to the possibility of Culicoides infection by these pathogens. We used PCR to test captured Culicoides species for natural infection with Leishmania spp. We tested 450 Culicoides females, divided into 30 pools of 15 individuals each, a

Uncovering host diversity and global distribution of Forcipomyia Meigen (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) ectoparasitism on Lepidoptera larvae using citizen science records.

Parasitic interactions play a central role in shaping insect diversity; however, many host-parasite associations remain poorly documented, particularly among Diptera. Species of Forcipomyia (Microhelea) are known ectoparasites of other insects, yet information on their host associations is still fragmentary. The Fuliginosa species-group is known to be ectoparasite of larvae of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. In this study, we present the first global synthesis of ectoparasitism by Forcipomyia (Microhelea), Fuliginosa species-group, on caterpillars, integrating literature records with data obtaine

Simuliid blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) and ceratopogonid midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as vectors of Mansonella ozzardi (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) in northern Argentina.

Mansonella ozzardi, a relatively nonpathogenic filarial parasite of man in Latin America, is transmitted by either ceratopogonid midges or simuliid blackflies. In the only known focus of the disease in north-western Argentina the vectors have never been incriminated. This study investigated the potential vectors of M. ozzardi in this area. The only anthropophilic species of these Diptera families biting man at the time of the investigation were Simulium exiguum, S. dinellii, Culicoides lahillei and C. paraensis. Using experimentally infected flies S. exiguum and both species of Culicoides allo
