Low antibody prevalence against Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, indicates high rate of lethal infections in wildlife.

Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) is a member of the B. cereus group which carries both B. anthracis virulence plasmids, causes anthrax-like disease in various wildlife species and was described in several sub-Saharan African rainforests. Long-term monitoring of carcasses in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, revealed continuous wildlife mortality due to Bcbva in a broad range of mammalian species. While non-lethal anthrax infections in wildlife have been described for B. anthracis, nothing is known about the odds of survival following an anthrax infection caused by Bcbva. To address thi

Evidence for continuing cross-species transmission of SIVsmm to humans: characterization of a new HIV-2 lineage in rural Côte d'Ivoire.

HIV types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2) are the result of multiple cross-species transmissions of their simian counterparts (SIVs) to humans. We studied whether new SIVs lineages have been transmitted to humans in rural Côte d'Ivoire and identified a novel HIV-2 variant (HIV-2-07IC-TNP03) not related to any of the previously defined HIV-2 groups. This finding shows that sooty mangabey viruses continue to be transmitted to humans, causing new zoonotic outbreaks.

Mechanical adaptation of trabecular bone morphology in the mammalian mandible.

Alveolar bone, together with the underlying trabecular bone, fulfils an important role in providing structural support against masticatory forces. Diseases such as osteoporosis or periodontitis cause alveolar bone resorption which weakens this structural support and is a major cause of tooth loss. However, the functional relationship between alveolar bone remodelling within the molar region and masticatory forces is not well understood. This study investigated this relationship by comparing mammalian species with different diets and functional loading (Felis catus, Cercocebus atys, Homo sapien

Necrotizing endometritis and isolation of an alpha-toxin producing strain of Clostridium septicum in a wild sooty mangabey from Côte d'Ivoire.

Few lethal pathogens in wild-living primates have been described, and little is known about infectious diseases of the reproductive tract and their possible impact on health and reproduction. This report describes the pathology and isolation of an alpha-toxin producing strain of Clostridium septicum in a case of necrotizing endometritis in a wild sooty mangabey found dead in a tropical rainforest of West Africa.

Serologic responses to Mycobacterium leprae-specific phenolic glycolipid-I antigen in sooty mangabey monkeys with experimental leprosy.

Four pairs of sooty mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys) were inoculated with serial, 10-fold dilutions of Mycobacterium leprae. The highest-dose pair received 4.8 X 10(10) M. leprae. Serum samples were obtained and clinical signs of leprosy were recorded at intervals of 35 months. Longitudinal serum samples were assayed by an ELISA method for the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies to the M. Leprae-specific phenolic glycolipid-I (PGL-I) antigen. In general, the onset of disease symptoms paralleled the number of M. leprae inoculated, but the ultimate course of disease depended upon individual ani

Seroprevalence of West Nile virus in nonhuman primates as related to mosquito abundance at two national primate research centers.

West Nile virus (WNV) surfaced as an emerging infectious disease in the northeastern United States in 1999, gradually spread across the continent, and is now endemic throughout North America. Outdoor-housed nonhuman primates at the Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) in Louisiana were documented with a relatively high prevalence (36%) of antibodies to West Nile virus. We examined the prevalence of antibodies to WNV in a nonhuman primate population housed in outdoor colonies at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center Field Station located near Atlanta, Georgia. We screened rhesu

Transmissible lymphoma and simian acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in rhesus monkeys.

Four rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were inoculated with a homogenate of a cutaneous lepromatous leprosy lesion from a mangabey monkey (Cercocebus atys). One died of B-cell lymphoma, and another died of an immunodeficiency syndrome. Cell suspensions prepared from the tumor and spleen of the monkey with lymphoma induced lymphoma or an immunodeficiency syndrome when inoculated into additional young rhesus monkeys. The immunodeficiency syndrome was similar to simian acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and consisted of opportunistic infections, lymphoid hyperplasia or atrophy, wasting, and syncyti

Transmission of MPXV from fire-footed rope squirrels to sooty mangabeys.

Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV; Orthopoxvirus monkeypox), is on the rise in West and Central Africa1-3. African rodents, especially squirrels, are suspected to be involved in MPXV emergence, but no evidence of a direct transmission to humans or non-human primates has been established4-9. Here we describe an outbreak of MPXV in a group of wild sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) in Taï National Park (Côte d'Ivoire). The outbreak affected one-third of the group, killing four infants. To track its origin, we analysed rodents and wildlife carcasses from the region. We identified a MPXV-in

A brief history of the discovery of natural simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infections in captive sooty mangabey monkeys.

Experimental leprosy studies using Mycobacterium leprae inoculum isolated from a sooty mangabey monkey (SMM) resulted in the accidental discovery that SMM's asymptomatically carry simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) that is pathogenic in macaques. We showed that the SMM virus, SIVDelta, was antigenically related to SIVmac, which had been identified in macaques, and to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Similar asymptomatic natural SIV infections had been reported in African green monkeys (AGM). Our results together with observations of others led us to propose that both SIVmac and SIVDelt

Ontogenetic bases of canine dimorphism in anthropoid primates.

This study tests hypotheses regarding the ontogeny of canine tooth size dimorphism in five anthropoid primate species (Saguinus fuscicollis, Macaca mulatta, Cercocebus atys, Papio hamadryas, and Mandrillus sphinx). Canine measurements and chronological age data are analyzed to determine if bimaturism, a sex difference in the age at which eruption ceases, accounts for canine tooth sexual dimorphism. Canine height measurements are evaluated through a variety of regression techniques. Results show a lack of sexual dimorphism in Saguinus. While size dimorphism is absent in the deciduous teeth of a

Onchocerca volvulus: parasitologic and serologic responses in experimentally infected chimpanzees and mangabey monkeys.

Six chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and six mangabey monkeys (Cercocebus atys) were inoculated with Onchocerca volvulus third-stage larvae (L3) of West African origin. Two chimpanzees each received 200, 300, or 400 L3, while three mangabeys each received either 50 or 250 L3. All six chimpanzees became microfilaria positive between 11 and 25 months postinoculation (PI), while two of the six mangabeys were skin-snip positive at 24 and 37 months PI, respectively. All chimpanzees developed antibodies to two native antigens of 14 and 22 kDa and to the recombinant antigens OV16, OC3.6, and OC9.3. Mark

Geographically structured genomic diversity of non-human primate-infecting Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue.

Many non-human primate species in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue, the bacterium causing yaws in humans. In humans, yaws is often characterized by lesions of the extremities and face, while T. pallidum subsp. pallidum causes venereal syphilis and is typically characterized by primary lesions on the genital, anal or oral mucosae. It remains unclear whether other T. pallidum subspecies found in humans also occur in non-human primates and how the genomic diversity of non-human primate T. pallidum subsp. pertenue lineages is distributed across hosts and spac

Urogenital Lesions in Nonhuman Primates at 2 National Primate Research Centers.

Given their genetic and anatomic similarities to humans, nonhuman primates (NHPs) may serve as animal models for urogenital diseases of humans. The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of spontaneous urogenital lesions occurring over a 30-year period at the Yerkes and Southwest National Primate Research Centers and to compare and contrast lesions occurring in Old World versus New World primates. Lesions occurring in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), baboon (Papio spp.), rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis), pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrin

Virally induced CD4+ T cell depletion is not sufficient to induce AIDS in a natural host.

Peripheral blood CD4+ T cell counts are a key measure for assessing disease progression and need for antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients. More recently, studies have demonstrated a dramatic depletion of mucosal CD4+ T cells during acute infection that is maintained during chronic pathogenic HIV as well as SIV infection. A different clinical disease course is observed during the infection of natural hosts of SIV infection, such as sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys), which typically do not progress to AIDS. Previous studies have determined that SIV+ mangabeys generally maintain health

Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepraemurium infections in domestic and wild animals.

Mycobacterium leprae, the aetiological agent of leprosy in humans, gives rise to a chronic granulomatous disease that affects primarily the skin and peripheral nerves, and secondarily some internal organs such as the testis and the eye; viscera are seldom involved. Depending on host resistance, leprosy may present as a benign disease (tuberculoid leprosy) or as a malignant disease (lepromatous leprosy), with a spectrum of intermediate stages appearing between the two. Immunity against leprosy depends on the cell-mediated immunity of the host, and this is severely compromised in the malignant (

APOBEC3G polymorphism as a selective barrier to cross-species transmission and emergence of pathogenic SIV and AIDS in a primate host.

Cellular restriction factors, which render cells intrinsically resistant to viruses, potentially impose genetic barriers to cross-species transmission and emergence of viral pathogens in nature. One such factor is APOBEC3G. To overcome APOBEC3G-mediated restriction, many lentiviruses encode Vif, a protein that targets APOBEC3G for degradation. As with many restriction factor genes, primate APOBEC3G displays strong signatures of positive selection. This is interpreted as evidence that the primate APOBEC3G locus reflects a long-term evolutionary "arms-race" between retroviruses and their primate

Identification of a new HIV-2 subtype based on phylogenetic analysis of full-length genomic sequence.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) and simian immunodeficiency virus from sooty mangabey (SIV(SM) form one of the six primate lentivirus lineages. The close phylogenetic relationship and geographic coincidence indicate that HIV-2 originated from cross-species transmission of SIV(SM) to humans. HIV-2 exhibits considerable genetic diversity, with subtypes A-F identified. Previously, we reported the partial gag and env sequences of an unusual HIV-2 isolate, Abt96. Abt96 was collected in Ivory Coast from an asymptomatic blood donor. Here we describe the near full-length genomic sequence o

Nonpathogenic SIV Infection in Sooty Mangabeys Is Characterized by a Lack of Activation and Expansion of Monocytes.

INTRODUCTION: Natural hosts of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), including sooty mangabeys (SMs), maintain high viremia without progressing to AIDS and AIDS-associated histopathogenesis. The mechanisms underlying this protection and lack of pathogenesis remain incompletely understood, particularly in relation to monocyte/macrophage activation. METHODS: Plasma soluble CD163 (sCD163), monocyte CD163 expression, and monocyte subset phenotypes were quantified in uninfected and naturally SIV-infected SMs and compared with uninfected and SIV-infected rhesus macaques (RMs). Male Circumcision and the Epidemic Emergence of HIV-2 in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Epidemic HIV-2 (groups A and B) emerged in humans circa 1930-40. Its closest ancestors are SIVsmm infecting sooty mangabeys from southwestern Côte d'Ivoire. The earliest large-scale serological surveys of HIV-2 in West Africa (1985-91) show a patchy spread. Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau had the highest prevalence rates by then, and phylogeographical analysis suggests they were the earliest epicenters. Wars and parenteral transmission have been hypothesized to have promoted HIV-2 spread. Male circumcision (MC) is known to correlate negatively with HIV-1 prevalence in Africa, but s
