Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is an uncommon autoimmune disorder characterized clinically by progressive, ultimately incapacitating ataxia and pathologically by destruction of cerebellar Purkinje cells, with variable loss of other cell populations. The disorder is most commonly associated with gynecological and breast carcinomas, small cell carcinoma of the lung, and Hodgkin's disease and in most cases comes on prior to identification of the underlying neoplasm. The hallmark of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is the presence of an immune response reactive with intracellular pro

Dedifferentiated endometrial cancer (DEC) is microscopically characterized by the presence of high-grade areas emerging from low-grade tumour. DEC is an aggressive tumour even when the dedifferentiated component represents only 20% of the entire neoplasm. A proper histological diagnosis is essential to define the most appropriate therapeutic approach for these tumors, since they are characterized by a particularly aggressive trend and by an extremely poor prognosis. We report a single case of DEC associated with dedifferentiated and adrenal metastasis, for which the patient underwent both abdo

Although medulloblastoma is said to be capable of astrocytic differentiation, the development of an astrocytic neoplasm in association with a medulloblastoma is extremely rare. We report the light and electron microscopic features of a supratentorial glioblastoma that occurred 13 years after radiation therapy for a cerebellar medulloblastoma. The diverse ultrastructural features of the glioblastoma may reflect the multipotentiality of the cells in medulloblastoma. An alternate interpretation is that the glioblastoma represents a radiation-induced neoplasm after therapy for a medulloblastoma.

Acute cerebellar ataxia (ACA) is a relatively common neurological disease in children. Most common types of ACA are acute post-infectious (APCA) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Less common but important causes include opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) and acute cerebellitis. Cerebellar neoplasms and acute hydrocephalus are additional causes of paediatric ataxia. APCA is the most common cause of ACA in children, comprising about 30-50% of total cases. This is a report about an immunocompetent 4-yrs-old male affected by APCA, due to co-infection by human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6)

The case of a twelve year old child with intracerebral hypertension and cerebellar syndrome in whom the neuroradiological and neurological examinations were suggestive of posterior cranial fossa tumor is reported. The brain scan depicted the scintigraphic pattern of midline neoplasms, most likely medulloblastoma or astrocytoma. At surgery a Cysticercus cellulosae was removed from the fourth ventricle. The authors suggest that in geographical areas with high prevalence of neurocysticercosis in the infantile population the hypothesis of the pseudotumoral form of the disease be remembered when on

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial metastases of gastro intestinal tumors are very rare. To the best of our knowledge only few cases were reported on the literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of 66-year-old male that presented with headache and vomiting. Physical examination found a kinetic cerebellar syndrome. Brain CT scan and MRI showed a right cerebellar tumor. Sub-occipital craniotomy was performed and the tumor was completely resected. Surgical outcomes were marked by the occurrence of an abdominal pain two days after brain surgery. Peritonitis was diagnosed and the patient underwe

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are benign bone neoplasms which typically involve the spine and long bones. We present a rare case of an ABC in the temporal bone with significant cerebellar compression.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient was a young boy who presented with several weeks of left posterior auricular pain. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and angiogram showed an expansile bone neoplasm involving the left petrous temporal bone.
INTERVENTION: A retrosigmoid-transmastoid craniectomy was performed, and total removal of the bone lesion was achieve

In patients with neoplasms located outside the central nervous system can appear degenerative changes within nervous tissue. Neuropathological investigations have been done on 101 cases with acute Non-Lymphoblastic Leukaemias (ANLL) and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL). Cerebellar degenerative changes especially granular layer rarefaction or atrophy appear more frequently in ANLL than in NHL.

In most microvascular decompression surgeries, surgical maneuvers are performed within normal anatomical structures without any neoplasms. Thus, detailed anatomical knowledge is essential to perform safe and efficient procedures. "Rule of 3" by Rhoton AL Jr. is helpful for understanding not only the anatomy of the posterior fossa but also the three neurovascular compression syndromes. The cerebellar arteries and posterior fossa veins have substantial variability, but a basic understanding of their typical patterns is useful to explore individual cases. To use adequate surgical approaches throu

BACKGROUND: Sudden hearing loss (SHL) is associated with serious systematic conditions such as neoplasms, vascular events, autoimmune diseases, infections, and iatrogenic injury. Some authors report that SHL can be an early warning sign of impending vertebrobasilar ischemic stroke. It is important to distinguish stroke from benign disease.
CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old male patient presented with SHL and vertigo as first symptoms. Diffusion-weighted imaging revealed high signal intensity in the left posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory of the cerebellar hemisphere and high signal inte

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a classical tumor-associated, immune-mediated disease typically associated with gynecological malignancies, small-cell lung-cancer or lymphoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a 38-year old male with an over 12 months rapidly progressive cerebellar syndrome. Extensive diagnostic workup revealed selective hypermetabolism of the right tonsil in whole-body PET. Histological examination after tonsillectomy demonstrated a lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the tonsil and the tongue base strongly suggesting a paraneoplastic cause

Clinicopathological data have been collected for 42 patients with cerebellar medulloblastoma diagnosed and treated in Western Australia between the years 1961 and 1984. Thirty-one patients were male and 12 were over 14 years of age. In 31 patients the neoplasms were localized to the midline, while in 10 they were placed laterally in the cerebellar hemispheres. The remaining patient had a diffusely spreading neoplasm in the meninges of the posterior fossa. Thirty-nine underwent surgical treatment followed by postoperative radiotherapy. Three patients died in the early postoperative period. Twen

The author analyzed the appearance on computed tomography after infusion of contrast medium of cerebellar infarction in three patients, whose diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical presentation, cerebral angiography, and sequential computed tomographic scans. Their computed tomographic appearance was not always the same as seen in the supratentorial counterpart, in showing reminiscence of an arteriovenous malformation, a leptomeningeal dissemination of a tumor or meningitis, or a neoplasm, respectively. For these reasons, it was concluded that it is important to notice the contrast-enhanc

In this retrospective study, we describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical findings in a series of primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms in African hedgehogs ( Atelerix albiventris). Twelve CNS neoplasms were found among 762 African hedgehog submissions (1.6%) to a private diagnostic laboratory in an 18-y period. The median age of affected hedgehogs was 3.5 y. No sex predilection was found. Hindlimb paresis, weakness, and ataxia were the most commonly reported clinical signs. Gangliogliomas ( n = 6) and astrocytomas ( n = 5) were the most commonly observed neoplasms; one o

ABSTRACT The prototype fowl glioma-inducing virus (FGVp) causes fowl glioma and cerebellar hypoplasia in chickens. In this study, we investigated whether a strain of avian leukosis virus (ALV), associated with avian osteopetrosis and mesenchymal neoplasms, is able to induce fowl glioma. We encountered avian osteopetrosis and mesenchymal neoplasms, including myxosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma, in Japanese native chickens used for both egg-laying and meat production. These birds were also affected by non-suppurative encephalitis and glioma in their brains. Four ALV strains (GifN_001, GifN_002, Gif

Juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma, the most common pediatric central nervous system (CNS) neoplasm, characteristically displays an indolent growth pattern and rarely demonstrates metastatic dissemination. Reports of infections mimicking CNS metastatic disease are also rare and can impact treatment. We report the youngest known case of a child with a CNS Nocardia farcinica infection who had a known cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma, review other infections that may masquerade as CNS neoplasms, and discuss N. farcinica CNS infections.

The activities of the red blood cell enzymes transketolase, glutathione reductase, and glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase were measured with and without in vitro addition of their respective coenzyme components thiamine, riboflavin, and pyridoxine in a group of patients with neurological disorders which may have been caused by malnutrition, intestinal malabsorption, hepatic failure or neoplasms arising outside the nervous system. The incidence of thiamine deficiency was 31%, of riboflavin deficiency 22% and of pyridoxine deficiency 6%. Alcoholics in particular suffered from deficiencies of vit

Introduction: Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant tumour syndrome with an increased risk of developing central nervous system neoplasms, mostly benign low-grade gliomas involving the optic pathway and the brainstem. High-grade astrocytomas or glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are rare. Cerebellar GBMs are rarer still, only seven cases NF1 patients have been reported Case description: We report a case of a cerebellar GBM in a 25-year-old male with NF1 who survived 18 months from the initial diagnosis without surgical debulking but only chemo and radiotherapy. Conclusion: A literature r

Presentation of a solitary cerebellar mass lead us to think about the presence of a primary tumour or the possibility of a pulmonary, mammary or digestive metastasis. However, once discarded these origins, is necessary to search the primary neoplasms in less frequent organs. Approximately, 5% of all intracranial metastasis have it's origin in a renal cancer. These lesions generally appear at the supratentorial area and within a generalized disease. In the other hand, the presentation of a solitary cerebellar metastasis from a renal carcinoma without affectation of other organs is a very unusua
