Malnutrition and cerebral intraparenchymal damage in patients with thrombosis of dural sinuses and/or cerebral veins.

BACKGROUNDS: Thrombosis of dural sinuses and/or cerebral veins (CVT) is an uncommon form of cerebrovascular disease. Malnutrition is common in patients with cerebrovascular disease, and early assessment of malnutrition and individualized nutritional treatment have been reported to improve functional outcomes of these patients. As for CVT patients, little is known about whether these patients would suffer from malnutrition. Also, the correlation between malnutrition and cerebral intraparenchymal damage (CID) in CVT patients was rarely studied. METHODS: Patients with CVT were retrospectively in

SWI brush sign of cerebral parenchymal veins in central nervous system diseases.

Brush sign (BS) was first reported as prominent hypointensity of deep medullary veins and subependymal veins on T2*-weighted images at 3 T MRI in patients with acute stroke in the territory of the middle cerebral artery. Subsequently, BS in central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as moyamoya disease, cerebral venous thrombosis, and Sturge-Weber syndrome was also described on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), and the clinical implications of BS were discussed. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate BS on SWI in various CNS diseases and its mechanisms in the above-mentioned disease

Rare thromboses of cerebral, splanchnic and upper-extremity veins. A narrative review.

Venous thrombosis typically involves the lower extremity circulation. Rarely, it can occur in the cerebral or splanchnic veins and these are the most frightening manifestations because of their high mortality rate. A third site of rare venous thrombosis is the deep system of the upper extremities that, as for the lower extremity, can be complicated by pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome. The authors conducted a narrative review focused on clinical manifestations, risk factors, and treatment of rare venous thromboses. Local risk factors such as infections or cancer are frequent in t

Imaging the Cerebral Veins in Pediatric Patients: Beyond Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis.

The range of intracranial venous anomalies in children differs from that in adults. As a commonly encountered highly morbid disease, sinovenous thrombosis has been discussed extensively in the literature, and the associated imaging considerations are similar in pediatric and adult patients. The authors shift the focus to less frequently discussed cerebral venous diseases in pediatric patients. First, the practical embryology pertinent to malformations, syndromes, and variants such as vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation, Sturge-Weber syndrome, and developmental venous anomalies are discussed.

Fluctuations in internal cerebral vein and central side veins of preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the acute management of extremely low birthweight (ELBW) infants reveal a high incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in infants with high-grade internal cerebral vein perfusion waveform fluctuations. In this prospective observational study we investigated the Doppler perfusion waveform fluctuations in the great cerebral vein, straight sinus, and internal cerebral veins of ELBW infants. METHODS: We evaluated perfusion waveforms after birth every 12 h until 120 h in 73 ELBW infants (<1,000 g) at our hospital. Fluctuations were categorized into four patterns of in

Structure of the Medullary Veins of the Cerebral Hemisphere and Related Disorders.

Deep medullary veins drain into subependymal veins with four convergence zones and show parallel distribution patterns adjacent to the body or inferior horn and a radial pattern in the frontal horn or trigon of the lateral ventricle. As white matter imaging develops such as diffusion tensor imaging or susceptibility-weighted imaging, requirements for understanding of white matter structures are increasing, not only for understanding of neuronal tracts but also for that of other structures including the fine anatomy of white matter vessels. Some disorders are related to deep medullary veins and

The hemodynamic response of the cerebral bridging veins to changes in ICP.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the hemodynamic response of the cerebral bridging veins to increased intracranial pressure (ICP) during normo- and hyperventilation. METHODS: Flow velocity (FV(m)), diameter (D), and pulsatility index (PI) were measured and calculated in the cerebral bridging veins using Color Doppler Ultrasound in seven pigs, and cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured using (133)Xe clearance in nine pigs, both during normo- and hyperventilation. ICP was increased stepwise from baseline (about 10 mmHg) to 20 and 30 mmHg by infusion of mock CSF into the cisterna magna. RESULTS: Mode

Transoccipital power-based color-coded duplex sonography of cerebral sinuses and veins.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Power-based transcranial color-coded duplex sonography is a new development for cerebrovascular imaging that is suited for detection of slow velocities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of this technique to detect cerebral sinuses and veins by means of the occipital window and to provide reference data. METHODS: The straight and inferior sagittal sinuses, great and internal cerebral veins, and basal veins were insonated in 120 normal subjects. The number of identified vessels, peak systolic (PSV) and end-diastolic (PDV) velocities, and resistance i

Complications of cerebral vein and sinus thrombosis.

Thrombosis of the dural sinus and encephalic veins (CVT) is an infrequent condition accounting for less than 1% of all strokes. Several recent prospective series, in particular the large International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis cohort, definitely have shown a more benign prognosis compared with that of arterial strokes: CVT has an acute case fatality of less than 5%, and almost 80% of patients recover without sequelae. However, patients surviving the acute phase of CVT are at risk of a number of complications such as recurrence of any thrombotic events in about 7%, recur

[Modern imaging in cerebral vein angioma].

Cerebral venous angiomas are vascular malformations of the brain which, before the advent of modern imaging, and in particular MRI, were thought to be rare. They have a specific angiographic aspect called "caput Meduse" as it corresponds to the description of a large draining vein to which converge numerous radial veins located in the white matter. These true vascular malformations have characteristic histological features making it possible to differentiate them from other vascular malformations, notably cavernomas. These lesions are less scanty than classically believed, being the most frequ

Short vein grafts for cerebral revascularization.

Experience with the use of a short saphenous vein bypass graft for cerebral revascularization is reviewed. Twenty patients with symptomatic atherosclerotic occlusive disease underwent a total of 21 bypass procedures. Cerebral revascularization was performed using a short (5 to 10 cm) saphenous vein graft (SVG) extending from the superficial temporal artery (STA) trunk anterior to the ear in 19 bypasses, or from the occipital artery (OA) immediately behind the mastoid process to the posterior temporal or angular branch of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in two bypasses. The early patency rate

Headache and cerebral vein and sinus thrombosis.

Headache is the most frequent and often the earliest symptom of cerebral vein and sinus thrombosis (CVT). Intracranial hypertension, vein distension and venous infarction alone or in combination are thought to be the principal mechanisms in the pathophysiology of CVT headache. The absence of specific features and the possibility of presentation without associated neurological signs can make its recognition difficult. The early diagnosis of an association of headache with CVT is crucial for patient well being. Physicians must always consider the possibility of CVT in patients with recent headac

Cerebral vein thrombosis in Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease is a chronic, relapsing multisystem disorder, and nervous system involvement is one of the serious manifestations. Neuro-Behçet is rarely reported in children and may present with a wide variety of symptoms because the entire neuraxis may be affected. A case of cerebral vein thrombosis secondary to Behçet's disease is presented. The patient has recovered without any visual loss and had no complaints at 1-year follow-up.

Murine Model of Cerebral Venous Outflow Occlusion Through Bilateral Ligation of Jugular Veins.

Lymphatic vessels play a key role in maintaining fluid homeostasis and immune surveillance within tissues. At the brain's border, the dural meninges contain lymphatic vessels closely neighboring venous sinuses. In humans, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is associated with stenosis of dural venous sinuses, suggesting that venous outflow disturbances may affect brain fluid regulation and meningeal lymphatic drainage. To explore this relationship in a controlled setting, we developed a mouse model of cerebral venous outflow occlusion via bilateral ligation of both internal and external

Depicting cerebral veins by three-dimensional CT angiography before surgical clipping of aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral veins show wide variation, and unexpected veins occasionally limit surgical procedures for clipping of cerebral aneurysms. This study was undertaken to assess the utility of three-dimensional CT angiography (3D-CTA) in the evaluation of venous anatomy before surgical clipping of cerebral aneurysms. METHODS: 3D-CTA was performed in 19 patients before pterional craniotomy. The venous anatomy visualized by use of 3D-CTA was compared retrospectively with intraoperative findings. RESULTS: 3D-CTA clearly depicted the superficial sylvian veins (SSVs) in 17 of 19 cas

Cerebral venous oxygen saturation studied with bilateral samples in the internal jugular veins.

The current literature reports many measurements (arteriovenous oxygen content difference and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen, etc.) with samples from the internal jugular veins (IJs), obtained from either side of the neck, based on the assumption that a reliable sample of mixed venous blood can be drawn. We compared oxygen saturation in both IJs in 32 patients with head injuries to establish the similarities or discrepancies in the two veins. Both IJs were cannulated with 20-G catheters; in five patients, a fiberoptic catheter was used to obtain a continuous recording of the hemoglobin satu

Enhanced susceptibility-weighted angiography (ESWAN) of cerebral arteries and veins at 1.5 Tesla.

OBJECTIVE: Enhanced susceptibility-weighted angiography (ESWAN) is a three-dimensional (3D) multi-echo gradient-echo sequence which consists of both magnitude and phase images. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of ESWAN for the depiction of both cerebral arteries and veins at 1.5 T by comparing with time-of-flight (TOF) MR angiography (MRA) and MR venography (MRV). METHODS: 13 healthy volunteers underwent both ESWAN and 3D-TOF-MRA examinations. Among them, nine volunteers underwent an additional two-dimensional-TOF-MRV examination. With regard to the ESWAN sequence, both maximum
